Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots β€˜N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Welcome to my little sugar experiment! Ok, it’s actually nothing crazy, but, instead, taking some wise advice from Caitlin, Gracie, and a few other bloggers and readers. The goal is save the sweets until after dinner.

My problem is once I start, I can’t stop. But knowing that a delicious dessert is waiting for me at the end of the day will hopefully help me hold off my cravings. It’s sort of like Cookie Friday, but on a smaller scale. Wish me luck!

Oatmeal is my forever go-to breakfast when I want to feel satisfied for hours.

This morning’s batch included chopped apples, soy milk, ground flaxseed meal, chia seeds, and a huge scoop of Teddie peanut butter.

I didn’t drink an iced coffee this morning because Mal and I are going out to Starbucks in a little bit. We have gift cards from Christmas that are burning a hole in our pockets!

My project for the day (besides avoiding sweets) is adding music to my new iPod Shuffle for the marathon. Our usual TNT Saturday run was moved to tomorrow morning, so I need to get it loaded-up ASAP. (None of us wanted to run on New Year’s Day!) I had planned to use my iPhone for the marathon, but its battery won’t last 4+ hours and the camera on it is really slow.

Question of the Day

What are your favorite running/workout songs? What are the must-haves? Please help me load-up my Shuffle!

P.S. I’m giving away three boxes of Puffins over on Trading Up Downtown today!

  1. Some of my favs right now for runs:

-Usher’s “DJ Got Me Fallin in Love”
-Michael Buble “Haven’t Met You Yet”
    -Jason Derulo “In My Head”
    -Finger Eleven “Paralyzer”
    -Kesha “Tik Tok”
-Hairspray’s “You Can’t Stop the Beat”

  2. i don’t know if you’re into rap/hip-hop, but the new girl talk album is absolutely fantastic. it’s a 70-minute mash-up of a ton of popular songs (new and old), and it’s free to download at http://www.illegal-art.net/allday/

this is seriously so much fun – you can download it as separate tracks, but i would recommend going seamless. it’s perfect for a long run πŸ™‚

  3. I’m lovin’ David Guetta “Memories”; Bruno Mars “Grenade”; and always Dave Matthews Band “Two Step”. I love “Two Step” because it has a great beat and is LONG! I love long songs on a long run because you can get further with just one song πŸ™‚

  4. Saving sweets for after dinner is a good idea, but it’s really hard for me too! I try to limit after dinner dessert to 100 calories, and ideally, after lunch chocolate to 50 calories. I need to be more strict about that for myself.

  5. Does a shuffle hold enough songs for a marathon? I think I’d need my regular iPod for that! I always listen to lots of Britney, Usher, really anything you’d hear on pop stations. oooo Blackeyed Peas and Gaga are good too.

  6. I like to run to Aerosmith, Dream On is a great song!
I also like to put a motivating song towards the end of the playlist where I know I will be tired in my run. I won’t back down by Tom Petty is a great one to motivate you to keep your legs moving!
Anything Lady Gaga, Nelly, U2 and I am not sure if you have heard of the band OAR. OAR’s older songs Love and Memories are great to run to!
Good luck with your sugar cutbacks, I deff. dont crave sugar as much since I only have a sweet treat after dinner and my sweet treat is greek yogurt with some kind of sweet like choc chips or a small amount of candy to satisfy my sweet tooth! Protein is very filling!

  7. Dancing by Myself-Billy Idol, Don’t Stop Believin-Journey, Proud-the Biggest Loser Theme Song! U2-Where the Streets Have No Name.

  8. Florence and the Machine-Dog Days are Over (awesome for running!)
    Rihanna-Live Your Life
Rusted Root-Send Me on My Way

  9. I use that approach as well. It has always worked well for me. I choose things like yogurt and fruit to stave off my crazy sweet tooth during the day, but always have something I look forward to after dinner. I think its a great balance!

  10. Call on Me- Eric Prydz and MMBop- Hanson

So great and funny! (you have to YouTube the video for the first one to see why!) They always put a smile on my face and remind me how great I feel πŸ™‚ I’m really really excited for you…you’ll blow the marathon out of the water!

  11. I am obsessed with music, so I could make a list a mile long here! A month or so ago I posted a screen shot of my workout playlist on my blog under Exercise -> Workout Playlist. Check it out, it’s almost 200 songs. lol

And recently added songs include: Ke$ha: We R Who We R, Black Eyed Peas: The Time, Usher: Hot Tottie

  12. I really appreciate your sharing your struggle with sweets. I have a terrible addiction. While I am able to mostly keep my weight under control by overcompensating for exercising, I know it isn’t healthy. Sweets far outweigh nutricious food in any given day for me. Your sharing your journey will be very helpful to me. I appreciate your honesty and look forward to learning what works for you. Hopefully I will be able to adopt a healthier eating plan.

  13. I also save my sweets for after dinner. It helps me eat well during the day because I know I get a treat at the end of it. I can’t get through a run without listening to Eminem’s Lose Yourself.

  14. I am loving music by Pink right now! Bad Influence is upbeat and is just fun to listen to. I also like the beats that house/dance music provides. Check out the dance genre on itunes for tons of good options. Good luck!

  15. I have some newer fun stuff in my mix like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Black Eyed Peas… the usual hip hoppy/pop kinda stuff. But then I also have a wide mix of old school! Journey, Hanson, U2, Aerosmith, NSYNC, Backsteet Boys, even some Britney Spears. Yep! Feel free to judge me! πŸ™‚

  16. I have so many running playlists on my ipod. My go-to songs are “Til I Collapse” by Eminem, “Semi Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind, and “My Life Would Suck without You” by Kelly Clarkson just to name a few. Those 3 are the ones I’ll throw on when I want to kick-up or if I’m losing motivation in my run.

  17. I have a 50+ song playlist on my ipod for the gym/running…you can’t go wrong with Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, etc…but what REALLY gets me in a groove is 90s dance/upbeat songs like MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Salt N Pepa, etc. Can’t go wrong with the 90s!

  18. As a general rule (not a strict one, i leave room for special occasions), I try to avoid sweets during the week. Instead, I’ll have dried fruit, nuts, and/or yogurt if I need something sweet after dinner on a weekday.

  19. I’m trying something similar to your sugar craving plan – I’d rather enjoy my treat at home with the hubs than at work at my desk. Seems like a no brainer huh?

As for music – I LOVE Skillet and TobyMac, both have fast, rocking music!

  20. I like your plan about the sweets after dinner! I have a hard time enjoying sweets in moderation… I’m a bit compulsive about it, actually. I will eat dessert until it’s gone. If there are 4 cookies or 40 cookies, it doesn’t matter. If there’s a sweet, I will think about it until I have DESTROYED it.

So I decided to just drink wine instead! The end.

Just kidding. I picked up that book you mentioned “Fit from Within” and she mentioned knowing how you react to sugar. I know for sure that when I get my sugar cravings under control and then allow myself an occasional treat, the “occasional” turns into daily, then it turns into after every meal, then it turns into INSTEAD of the meal. And I eat cheesecake for lunch. :-\

But feeling deprived doesn’t help either. So I make sure to have a nice big piece of fruit after every meal for dessert. And I tell myself, “Time for dessert!” and I go get my fruit so I feel I’m being treated. I also buy the most decadently delicious yogurt called “Liberte” which is so freaking awesome the coconut yogurt will make you cry. It’s full fat and it has sugar so it’s definitely a treat, but the protein helps it to have a bit more staying power than cookies and it’s SOOOO creamy…. ahhh I love it. Or I will have 1/2 a cinnamon raisin Ezekiel muffin with almond butter for dessert. It’s a little sweet, but not too sweet. I think all my refined holiday treats adjusted my sugar taste buds to expect super-sweet tastes so I’m trying to use less-sweet treats to get back on track. So far, this has worked and my pants are fitting much better and I’m not so cranky and crash-y. This weekend, I’m allowing myself 90% dark chocolate and then next week it’s back to fruit/yogurt/nut butters for treats.

Sorry this is so long, good luck with your “recovery!” πŸ˜‰

  21. .38 Special’s “Hold On Loosely” and Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up” are my favorites. And your new blog look is awesome!

  22. Waiting until after dinner to enjoy sweets is a good idea. You might also try allowing yourself one or two specific items a day so that you appreciate the indulgence that much more.

Running music? Too many songs to name, but a few are: The Darkness “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”; Alien Ant Farm “Smooth Criminal”; Catherine Wheel “Black Metallic”; DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince “Summertime”; Outkast “Hey Ya”; The Time “Jungle Love”; Lakeside “Fantastic Voyage”; theme from Shaft

  23. little lion man- mumford and sons
empire state of mind- jay Z
    bleeding love- leona lewis

i’m so excited to hear all about your marathon! your gonna rock it.
what helps me ward off sweets it to check in with my hunger after a meal. if i eat unsatisfying meals i find myself craving something sweet, so I have been amping up my meals lately which helps me feel full on the ‘good’ stuff, and not crave sweets! good luck with everything πŸ™‚

  24. I love
    Kesha’s Tik Tok
    Rihanna Only Girl
Bruno Mars Just The Way You Are (a little slow, but I love the lyrics!
    ) and Grenade
    Lady Gaga Bad Romance
Katy Perry Firework and Teenage Dream

    Have a nice run! πŸ™‚

  25. Don’t worry Tina, I am right there with you on the sugar. Totally powerless over it. I find that the more I can put off having any sugar the less of it I eat. The suggestion of having it after dinner only is a great one.

Running songs- You have got to download these:
    -Monster- Kanye West
    -Fembot- Robyn
-Raining Men- Rhianna & Nicki Minaj

  26. That reminds me, I need to make my half- marathon playlist before tomorrow! I moved my last longer training run to tomorrow too, because there is no way I’m going to be in the mood to run on Saturday. πŸ˜‰

Some of my favorite songs are:
    Ravers in the UK- Manian
    Breaking Dishes- Rhianna
