Taking Bets

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Baked parsnip chips. I’m not sure if parsnips could taste any better. But, really, what vegetable cooked in oil and salt wouldn’t taste pretty good? 😉

Here’s how to make them:

Preheat oven to 425*F and then cut two parsnips into thin “chip-like” pieces (the thinner, the better).

Put parsnip slices into a large mixing bowl and add 3 tablespoons of oil. (I used butter flavor grapeseed oil, but olive oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, etc. would work too.)

Coat slices with oil and then spread evenly on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with sea salt.

Bake for about 15 minutes until edges of parsnip chips turn a golden brown.

Remove tray from oven and transfer chips onto a plate covered with paper towels to absorb the extra oil. Allow to cool before serving.

I have to admit, I like these chips better than regular potato chips. There’s a lot more flavor and the texture is thick, firm, and crispy. Basically, they’re a cross between a French fry and a potato chip. Big fan.

I’m definitely making these for our next get-together. Maybe football this Sunday?

So, I did something very bad today: I dyed my hair. 😕

I know, I know. I’m supposed to be taking better care of my hair after totally abusing it for the past few months, but I couldn’t stand looking at my ugly orange highlights anymore. They were once a lovely golden brown, but using “whatever” shampoo was on sale at CVS completely destroyed them.

I’m pretty sure using an at-home box of dye is the worst thing that I could do to my hair, but at least I used one that is “clinically proven less damaging!” 😉 Let’s hope so! Right now, my hair feels fairly healthy, but we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.

So, my husband is typically a very observant person. He’s good with the whole “attention to detail” thing, especially with regard to the house, finances, Fantasy Football, video games, small print on coupons, etc. But, when it comes to my hair, he’s totally oblivious. He’ll eventually notice a change, but sometimes it takes him days””even weeks””to notice. Maybe it’s a guy thing?

It’s funny because my sister and my girlfriends notice almost immediately when I change my appearance, especially my hair. My friend, Marie, for instance, notices when I simply blow dry my hair! I guess it’s just a girl thing? 😉

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to guess how long it will take Mal to notice my new hair color. How long do you think it will take him?

  1. Hopefully he notices it within a day, but I think it can be a good sign if he doesn’t notice because that means it looks natural and not shockingly different. I once didn’t notice my boyfriend had shaved off his goatee, but I think it was because it looked completely normal to me either way.

So, if he doesn’t notice, it’s probably because your hair looks good. And if he does notice, it can also be because it looks good. 🙂

  2. I think most guys notice it right away; they just don’t mention it unless they love it (at least that’s what DH does). Reluctant to give less than glowing compliments for fear of the consequences … I use Natural Instincts. It looks shiney and glossy right after using, but then gradually looks duller and orangey. And, it does not cover grey (not that you need to worry at your age). I think next time I’ll try semi perm at my hair salon, but then again, I may get impatient and just try another shade at home 🙂

  3. One time I dyed my hair a shade or so lighter. I did it RIGHT IN FRONT of my husband. He commented on it smelling and how soft my hair was afterwards with the conditioner, but never mentioned the color. 2 weeks later, he looks at me and is like, your hair looks lighter. Did you dye it? Wow, seriously? haha so if he’s anything like my husband, I give him 2 weeks 😉

  4. When my boyfriend and I were on our second date we were sitting out in the sun. I have natural red highlights (my mom and sisters all have red hair, I have blondish-brown now) and they are noticeable with the sun on them. He asked if I had dyed my hair and I was shocked with how observant he was (for a guy).

The funny thing is, he’s really good at asking if something is new or different. Even if he has already seen it a million times on me (like a favorite pair of jeans). When it comes down to it, I think it’s just a guy thing.

  5. I think I’ll have to add parsnips to my grocery list now 😉

If Mal empties the garbage I think he’ll notice tomorrow or Saturday. If not, I think he’ll notice after Christmas lol.

  6. Oh my gosh! My mum has been roasting parsnips all ym life but I’ve never considered cutting them into coins and makign them more like chips. Yum yum!

  7. Tomorrow morning!

You are impressive for being able to keep silent about it. I would have lasted ten minutes before saying something stupid like, “me oh my, doesn’t my hair look stunning today?”.

  8. Having seen the after pic, if Mal doesn’t notice, I don’t really blame him. I went mostly strawberry blonde and had guys not notice. I have dark auburn hair, with no tinge of blonde in it. It does look happier though, you could see what i’ve come to term as the “brassy” in the before pic.

  9. Teen, my hair is also a subject of relentless abuse, and I found it responds incredibly well to a once weekly Jojoba oil treatment – I use the Queen Helene one; it’s really amazing and easy to use in the shower after a shampoo. Let me know if you try it. I found it at Sally Beauty Supply. xox Erin
