I had a little fun in the kitchen baking with protein powder yesterday afternoon. Baking and protein powder? Yep, that’s right. Protein powder is actually a fairly versatile ingredient! I wanted to make something delicious, but also semi-healthy and satisfying to eat before or after a workout. With that said, here’s a tasty recipe for Chocolate Chip Protein Bars. Chocolate chips and vanilla protein powder combine to make a sweet, light, and fluffy treat packed with protein. I…

Nine miles were on my half marathon training schedule for today. I have to admit, I was kind of dreading it, so I dillydallied online””read blogs, Tweeted, played on Pinterest””before getting my act together to finally get out there and run. Before heading out, I went on MapMyRun and found a 3.33-mile loop that started and ended at my house. I planned to run it three times, which turned my 9 miles into 10 miles,…

Last night, when I was reading Woman’s Health (May 2012), I stumbled upon a short piece about a study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, which reported that “people work harder when their efforts are tracked.” According to the study, when participants knew they were wearing a pedometer, they took 1,500 more steps than when they didn’t think they were being monitored. Interesting, right? Well, the study got me thinking about my own…

Hello! Is today flying by for anyone else? I figured my first work day back from vacation would drag on and on, but it’s really whizzing by. Holy moly, where does the time go? Hey, I’m not complaining! Lunch I went grocery shopping this morning, so my kitchen was full of lots of healthy options for lunch today. I had raw green bell pepper, carrots, and celery with hummus. Love this flavor! I also had…

A couple of weeks ago, I attempted to make cookies with vanilla protein powder in them. Of course, I knew they wouldn’t taste like “real,” dessert-like cookies””I was aiming for a pre- or post-workout-type cookie””but what I created totally bombed. Let’s just say my first attempt at Protein Powder Cookies was completely inedible (and sort of disgusting). My second attempt, however, was much, much, much better! Protein Powder Cookies Ingredients: 1/4 cup dried prunes or…

Hello! We’ve been having issues with our internet lately and it crapped out again this afternoon, so instead of getting frustrated and waiting for it to come back up, I used the “downtime” to take Murphy to the dog park. He was also sort of driving me crazy, so I figured letting him get out some of his pent-up pug energy would benefit us both. The second I let Murphy off the leash at the…

After breakfast this morning, I was going to run 6 miles like I had planned for my Weekly Workouts, but, as I was changing into my running gear, I remember that I told one of my CrossFit friends that I’d be at Monday night’s class. I’m sure she wouldn’t have cared if I decided not to go tonight, but I don’t like letting people down or going back on my word, especially when it comes…

After breakfast this morning, I headed out to tackle a speed workout for my half marathon training. Sadly, it never happened. As I started out on my run, my hamstrings felt really tight, like an almost painful soreness. Usually, a mile warm-up and some stretching loosens me right up, and I’m good to go, but no matter what I did this morning, my hamstrings just hurt. I even felt a weird sharp pain a couple…

Wow. What a wonderful Wednesday it has been for me. I love school vacation week.  Workout I was planning to take a rest day today since the CrossFit Open officially starts tonight (and I’m registered for it!), but our box’s WOD looked “easy,” so I decided to go. Boy, was I wrong about it. WOD: “Best of Three” This workout will be divided into three parts, a row, a run, and an AMRAP for Doubs….

Oh, how I love this weather. It’s 50 degrees and sunny in late-January! Remember this time last year? Blech. I’m not sure wintry weather gets any better than this! Snack I had a doctor’s appointment this morning, so I packed an apple in my purse just in case I got hungry on the drive home. I actually ended up getting hungry during my appointment, so I was happy to have a healthy snack with me….

Today is one of those days when I want to eat everything in sight and nothing seems to satisfy my hunger. I’m not sure what’s up with my suddenly ravenous appetite, but I’m just going with it. Sometimes, my body is hungry, and I need to FEED it! Breakfast I started my day with a big bowl of “Oatmeal” Minus the Oats with a scoop of peanut butter. I ended up going back for a…

Guess who did a rope climb today?? THIS GIRL!!! Woohoo!! Workout Today’s WOD was just too good to pass up. I wasn’t even planning to go to CrossFit this morning (I actually had 7 miles to run on my calendar), but the “Sweet Potato Chipper” looked like a lot of fun. I love workouts like this! WOD: “Sweet Potato Chipper” For time: 12 Turkish Get-ups (6 ea. side) 16 Box Jumps (24, 20) 22 Ring Rows…

Success!! I completed the Home for the Holidays Virtual 10K and I set a new PR while doing it! I ran on a treadmill, but my time was still faster than my previous 10K, so that counts, right?   As part of the Virtual 10K, prizes will be awarded for the most spirited holiday outfit, so I dressed as a Christmas ninja. Obviously, I need to invest in some holiday race gear. Running on a treadmill for 6.2 miles…

Later this afternoon, Mal and I are off to New Haven, Connecticut for the Harvard-Yale game. Mal’s dad is a Harvard alum, so it’s a yearly tradition to get together and watch the game. Tonight, we’re meeting family and friends for a pre-game celebration and then spending the night in New Haven. Tomorrow, we’ll wake up early for some mid-morning tailgating before the start of The Game. I’m excited for the game, but I’m even…
