When my alarm went off at 4:45 this morning, I did not want to get out of bed. It was chilly inside our house and my bed was so warm with my husband on one side of me and a fuzzy, snoring pug on the other. Forcing myself out of bed wasn’t easy, but I’m so glad that I did it.

This morning, I met my Back on My Feet team at Father Bill’s Place before heading over together to the YMCA for an early morning workout.

While walking around the track, I heard all about Friday night’s group date to Papa Gino’s followed by a viewing of The Adjustment Bureau at the movie theater. I also heard about Sunday’s 5K race in South Boston, which was run by 6 members of our team. It sounded like everyone had a great time at both of these events. I’m a little bummed that I missed them, but BOMF does fun stuff all of the time, so there will be plenty more opportunities to hang out with my team.

On my drive home, I encountered the most beautiful sunrise.

It was breathtaking. What a way to start the day.

My stomach was growling before I even walked into the house, so I immediately tossed two pieces of whole grain bread into the toaster oven.

While I waited, Murphy kept me company by my feet. (He really just hoped I’d drop some food onto the kitchen floor. There’s no ”˜5 Second Rule’ in our house. Murphy has it taken care of in 3 seconds or less.)

When my bread was finished cooking, I topped them with almond butter and pickled plums.

The pickled plums from Boat Street are large pitted prunes, which are plumped with a syrup of cider vinegar and cane sugar with coriander, mustard seed, arbol chili, orange peel, and bay leaf. It’s consistency is a mix between jam and chutney. It’s pretty awesome.

Mmm! I loved this combination of flavors. My sandwich was sort of like an amped up PB & J.

I also drank an iced coffee and some water with breakfast.

Feel Great Weight

Check out this week’s Feel Great Weight post: 12 Ways to Eat More Colorful Fruits and Vegetables.

Question of the Day

In what areas of your life are you most and least healthy?

I think I’m most healthy with regard to exercise. I enjoy it, so it’s pretty easy for me to stick to regular workouts. I’m least healthy with regard to a work-life balance. I work way too much, but I am really trying to change that by stepping away from my computer more often.

  1. I’m with you on the most healthy with exercise. I’m probably least healthy with the play in my life. My body would probably thank me if I attended a few less drink and bar food filled happy hours.

  2. Yummmm – those pickled plums actually look delicious!
Where do you get that brand? A health food store? I’ve never seen it……

lol and I’m with Emily on this one: I’m pretty great about getting a decent amount of exercise in every week ….
but then there’s those hh & nights out 😉

    Working on keeping myself accountable!

  3. I’d say that I’m most healthy when it comes to exercise (I work out 3-4 days a week at a minimum) as well as overall stress management ( I’m very social, I admit when life is too much and ask for help or reduce my obligations, and I have a good support group via friends and family).

I am least healthy when it comes to um, partying. I still act like a 21 year old sometimes (I’m 26) but I blame this on being done with graduate school, being single, and having a lot of single crazy friends. I’m good during the week but when the weekend hits, I don’t sleep! I’m trying to tackle this by:
    1) counting how many drinks I have – no more than 1/hour that I’m out (always vodka/soda, bud light – nothing sugary or dark)
    2) NO pregaming
    3) I try to avoid late night snacking by eating a good meal before going out, or at least keeping moderately healthy late night options in my house

This plan failed during St. Patty’s Day “week.” Let’s just say that I’m glad it’s over!

  4. I’d say my least healthy habit is my tendency to sometimes say “aw enough with the health food” already and go on a sweets binge, eating 2 candy bars or an entire pint of ice cream at a time. This happens maybe twice a week. My best health practice is not keeping that stuff in the house so at least when I decide to go crazy, I have to go out of my way to go to the store! The only sweets in our house on the regular are months-old Christmas candy… hardly appetizing!

  5. I’m pretty healthy with my food, but I’m not as healthy with my exercise and I really should be. I’m not as strict with it. Right now I’m doing half marathon training and it’s going, but I don’t have the enthusiasm for it like I wish I did.

  6. the sunrise looks amazing.. i’m most healthy (most of the time) with my food selections..least healthy with working out and getting enough sleep..

  7. I think that I’m most healthy in regard to my workout routine too! For the last 5 years exercise has been a huge part of my life. It’s engrained in my routine each day. Whether I’m going to a class at the gym or meeting friends to workout outside its fun and it makes me feel better mentally and physically. It’s easy to stick to my schedule because I find it joyful.

I am probably least healthy with my relationship to food. For a long time I had an all-or-nothing attitude about how I ate. For weeks I ate how I deemed “perfect” and then one little “cheat” would throw me into a tailspin undoing all my progress. These days I’m learning to be more mindful and listen to what my body wants. There is no perfect eating, good or bad foods, no cheats – it’s just eating. Food is so many things to me. It’s not only fuel for the activities I love (spinning, bike rides, walking, jogging, hiking, and kayaking) but it’s social and it’s comforting and fun.
    Great post, aaamazing sunrise!

  8. What a gorgeous sunrise!
I think I’m most healthy in that I give my mental health top priority. I do what is necessary to help me feel calm and at peace and never feel guilty for it.
Least healthy – booze and sugar 🙂 Although there’s been less booze lately because I can’t afford it.

  9. that sunrise is breathtaking, and what a great way to start the day seeing that! The sun makes me happy!

Okay that pic of Murphy is in my top favorite pics of him!! love his face in it!!!!

I eat healthy pretty much all the time, but I do treat myself, its all about balance ; )

  10. Wow, gorgeous sunrise, thanks for sharing the pics!

I’m most healthy with workouts, pretty consistent there, but I’m still working to eat a consistently healthy diet…still haven’t completely conquered the mentaility of “oh, I cheated on this meal, might as well throw the towel in on the rest of the day and start back tomorrow”

  11. I’m mpst healthy on my workouts. I get them done and enjoy them each time (good or bad). I’m least healthy when it comes to desserts. I need dessert every night, most of the time it has a lot of sugar in it.

  12. So I’m running the Ragnar relay in September in Washington DC and discovered that the charity that the race is sponsoring this year is Back on my Feet! I was excited to see it was something I was semi-familiar with, thanks to your blog 🙂

  13. I’d definitely say I’m most AND least healthy when it comes to exercise. I tend to not listen to my body and hesitate to take off days when I need ’em.

howeveeerrr, I’ve gotta so much better at it. I haven’t done a thing this week (post half marathon), and I’m feeling great about it! 🙂

  14. What a beautiful sunrise! It’s rare that I see a sunrise but I usually see the sunset. When I was on vacation in Tucson last week I saw amazing sunsets over the mountains and desert!

  15. That sunrise makes getting up early worth it 🙂
I would say I am healthiest with getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night, if I don’t I am pretty useless the next day!
Least: getting way too anxious and stressed about things, even if they are fairly trivial

  16. I am most healthy when it comes to exercise; I work out 5-6 times a week with a good balance of cardio and strength training. Least healthy would be my weekend eating habits. During the week, I eat really healthy but on weekends I eat too much restaurant food and occasionally go overboard with the treats. But I figure as long as I stick to my workout routine, I can maintain my weight and indulge on weekends! 😛

  17. Wow, that is a stunning sunrise!

And I am definitely most healthy with what I eat. I am pregnant and I am trying to be very conscious of everything I put into my body. I tend to stress out very easily though so I am trying to work on that because I know that it is just as important when it comes to my (and my baby’s) health.

  18. I think I am most healthy with my consistency and dedication to exercise. I am least healthy with dealing with stress and overindulging when I am stressed.

  19. I definitely struggle the most to keep a healthy exercise regimen. It’s tough because I’ve struggled over the past few years with health and injury issues. I’m finally starting to get back on track: all the amazing blogs out there are helping to keep me motivated!

It’s been a few years since I’ve had a problem eating in a healthy way. I rarely overeat and I’ve gotten really into cooking since I went mostly meatless with my diet. Hurray for food 🙂

  20. What a pretty sunrise! 😀

I’m most healthy in terms of my exercise and eating habits, but one of the unhealthy aspects of my life is how much time I spent sitting because of classes/studying/school work. I feel like such a lump some nights!

  21. That sunrise is beautiful!

My best healthy habit is exercise as well, and it is more of a hobby of mine then a ‘to do’. My least healthy habit, is my problem with managing serving sizes. When I am home I am well behaved with a food scale, measuring cups, and measuring spoons, but when I am out of the house I monitor less closely.

  22. I don’t know how you can work out first thing in the morning… for me, it’s not the motivation at all. But I have ZERO energy… it takes all day for me to rebuild my energy stores, so I work out in the late afternoon/evenings.

That being said, I am most healthy in my eating and exercise routine. I eat as clean as I can, and work out every day. Least healthy? Definitely the work-life balance…

  23. What does PICKLED Jelly taste like?? I really really dislike vinegar (which is totally obnoxious because its in everything!) but My fiancee loves stuff like this. Is it more sweet or kind of more like chutney (you know, spicy and tart-ish)?

And don’t beautiful sunrises/sunsets just remind you how beautiful life can really be? They make me take those really deep, powerul breaths that remind you that you’re alive!!

  24. Most healthy with exercise, least healthy with stress management, sugar, and sometimes alcohol (although that’s decreased a lot – we try not to keep it in the house anymore!)

  25. I think my exercise is where I do best. Training for an ultra-marathon and half ironman keeps me on track. I even eat healthy on most of the time but when I eat unhealthy I tend to go overboard. So moderation is what I really struggle with.

  26. Lovely sunrise. I am most healthy in my exercise habits and mostly my eating habits. Least healthy in the amount of sleep I get…I can’t seem to fit enough into the day to get 8 hours.

  27. I am most healthy with my cooking probably. I NEVER cook unhealthy things. I am most unhealthy with my stress level. I am a work-a-holic and don’t know how to relax! luckily, my hobby is yoga, so I think that counts 😉
