After last night’s shenanigans and waking up to cold, rainy weather, a number of reasons popped into my head for not running this morning. But, a running date with Anne, Elizabeth, and Ali motivated me to get my lazy (hungover) butt out of bed– and I’m so glad that I did.

Bright and early this morning, Anne and I drove to South Boston, where we met Elizabeth and Ali, for the start of our run. The four of us headed out for a rainy 6-mile run along The Boston HarborWalk, which is a network trails and walkways along the water.

The HarborWalk winds through the city’s waterfront neighborhoods and downtown area, stretching from Chelsea Creek to the Neponset River, through East Boston, Charlestown, North End, Downtown, South Boston and Dorchester. I didn’t realize it was so long! TWSS!

We ran about three miles to the edge of the North End and then looped back through the Rose Kennedy Greenway. It was such a pretty run (even in the rain) and a nice change from the Boston Common/Charles River route that I’ve been doing a lot lately.

After our run, we returned to Elizabeth’s condo for a fantastic brunch, which included mimosas, bagels, a berry tart, fruit salad with mozzarella and fresh basil, brie cheese, and red grapes. Elizabeth is the Hostess with the Mostess!

I helped myself to a little bit of everything. I swear, food tastes so much better after a run!

On the way home, Anne and I stopped at Marylou’s (obviously) for a couple post-run of iced coffees. (Iced coffee also tastes so much better after a run!) Anne was a huge fan of the Peanut Butter Wonderful flavor. I think we may have another Marylou’s fan!

  1. How nice to be able to meet up with friends and go running. I just moved to California from Georgia and that’s one of the things I miss the most, running with my friends. I hope to make new friends soon! Thanks for sharing.

  2. I know EXACTLY where those stairs are! I’ve only been to Boston a handful of times but I’ve walked down those stairs after a business meeting in a building nearby. 🙂
    That bagel with cream cheese sounds so good right now!

  3. I gotta ask, because I’ve only been reading your blog since June (aka the summer months) … do you continue to drink iced coffee in the winter? Or do you switch to hot coffee? Silly question, but I was curious!! 😛

  4. Boston looks so beautiful! I have only been there once and it was when I was much younger but every time you post pictures of the city, culture, history and amazing restaurants it makes me want to go so badly! I definitely see a weekend trip in the future! Glad you had a great weekend!

  5. Oh man, I am in Boston too and I was so bummed about the rain this morning! It killed my motivation to run :/ More power to you gals! I actually did end up going for a short 2 mile run once the sun started to shine later in the afternoon (after I did some serious retail therapy all because of the rain!)

    I wish there was a Marylou’s right in Boston. Do you know of any locations directly in the city??? I’m kinda getting sick of Dunks 🙁 And Marylou’s is SO GOOD!

  6. I always run by myself, and I’m afraid to run with a buddy because I’m just not a talker when I run! I have to breath! Haha. Do people tend to talk a lot when running together?

    Also I soooo wish there was somewhere like MaryLou’s in Chicago; you should suggest they expand!!

  7. This running meetup sounds so fun! And it makes me miss Boston a lot too. 🙂 And YES I completely agree that food tastes better after a run…

    I’m from the North Shore (with family in Hingham and Norwell too) but live in NYC now and am soooo jealous every time you write about MaryLou’s. I’m OBSESSED with the Girl Scout Cookie!
