One of My Biggest Phobias

Last night’s WOD was a good one! It was actually two 8-minute WODs back-to-back with a short rest in between. I love workouts that are a little different. Constantly varied, baby!

The first AMRAP involved rope climbs, which I like doing because they make me feel bad-ass, but, at the same time, I am super duper afraid of heights. (I have Acrophobia.) For example, when I go skiing, I won’t look down when I’m on the chair lift. Instead, I look straight head and barely say anything because I don’t want to freak myself out, suffer a panic attack, fall off the chair lift, and plummet to my death. Clearly, heights and I don’t get along.

When it comes to rope climbs at CrossFit, I employ the same “don’t look down method” and try to get up the rope as fast as I can using my legs as much as possible. Inevitably, my arms get tired, no matter how much I use my legs. When my arms get tired, I automatically start to get nervous, which makes me think about having a panic attack, falling off the rope, and plummeting to my death. It’s a tragic chain of events.

Even still, I usually try to do one or two more rope climbs to work through my fears, but, ultimately, that fear takes over and I quit. I hate that I’m such a Fraidy cat, but I realize the stronger and more proficient I get at rope climbs, the less they scare me. I know I just need to work at it.

The second WOD involved Sumo Deadlift High Pulls and Hollow Rocks. The score from this WOD would be our score for the day and go on the whiteboard. (The first WOD “didn’t count” because I think our coach wanted us to focus on our rope climb technique while being fatigued from the Wall Balls and not worry too much about how many rounds we got.) A couple of the top ladies in earlier classes got 13+ rounds, so I was hoping to do as well as them, and I got 13 + 0! Hooray! I almost had 1 Sumo Deadlift High Pull at the end, but the clock buzzed before I could get it up. Oh, well.

Did you happen to notice my snazzy workout pants? My friends at Reebok sent them to me to review on CNC. They’re the PWR Legging (Print), and they are super stylish (obviously!) and perfect for rope climbs because they’re nice and long, so they cover and protect my legs when I am coming down the rope. They also have a cuff at the bottom, which gives them an extra snug and secure fit, which stays put, so I didn’t get a nasty rope burn on my shin like I usually do. (FYI: These leggings run large. I suggest ordering a size down.) My tank (PWR Seamless Long Bra Top) is also from Reebok. I love the long fit””it’s super flattering, comfy, and stayed put during my workout.

Dinner

After CrossFit, I came home, showered, and then made dinner, which was an easy Jambalaya that turned out much better than I expected. I totally just winged it!

Since I’m leaving for Milwaukee today, I figured I should make a meal with lots of leftovers, so Mal doesn’t need to cook dinner tonight. I always feel sort of bad when I leave for a blog trip because he needs to wake up super early to take Murphy for a walk before school, so I try to do anything that I can to make his life easier while I am away.

Easy Jambalaya

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 12 ounces Kielbasa sausage
  • 1 10-ounce can Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce

Directions:

  1. Cook rice as directed on package.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large pan on the stovetop. Add Kielbasa, pepper, and onion and cook for about 10 minutes until onion is soft and sausage is lightly browned.
  3. Stir in Rotel and tomato sauce and remove from heat. Combine with white rice.
  4. Serve immediately.

Makes 4-6 servings

Question of the Day

What are some of your phobias?

I’m also really scared of spiders (Arachnophobia), which has actually become a huge joke in our house thanks to my husband. Let’s just say, he gets a kick out of scaring me. Not funny, Mal!

  1. I am terrified of deep water! If I can’t see the bottom of a body of water I can’t swim. Good thing I like to run :3

  2. Ha ha I am the resident bug exterminator in my apt- my roommate is terrified of any kind of bug! I don’t mind spiders (unless they’re the super big ones), but if it’s a bee I will run screaming like a little kid! I am actually scared of heights, too, and tornadoes. That looks like a yummy jambalaya recipe!

  3. That easy jambalaya recipe looks really good! Love simple recipes like that, sometimes simple is so much tastier than an elaborate meal. And I’m not afraid of heights at all (btw love the term fraidy cat haha), but I am irrationally afraid of spiders too. Whenever I see a spider I immediately imagine them crawling all over my skin and I freak the eff out. Ick!

  4. Love the pants! During rush hour, it always scares me that I’ll get squished (literally) between two semi trucks. Not sure how I got that (very grim) fear, but its there. Fortunately, where we now live, there aren’t too many semis on that stretch of road during rush hour…

  5. Earthquakes terrify me. Not while they are happening, but that they COULD happen! I lived in Los Angeles for 3 years and we had several. I was fine until I had a baby. The first night we were home, I was nursing him and we had an earthquake. It was a longer one and during it I was calm and fine, but it left me weirdly worried. That night, nursing him again, and ANOTHER earthquake. So after that, everytime I was nursing I had to keep a glass of water beside me and watch it to make sure the room wasn’t shaking. Everytime I closed my eyes while nursing, I was jump awake and look at the water. Just as I was getting over it, when he was maybe 8 months old, I was laying in bed around 2am and he was crying for no reason. I thought to myself, I’ll give him another 10 min, the ONLY way I will get out of bed right now is if we have a stupid earthquake…. 10 seconds later, earthquake. Time to pack up and move back to Maine!!!

  6. Ive only been doing cf for 3 months and we did rope climbs last week for the first time and I must say I was not that great at them.. When I do get them down Im sure I will feel like a bad ass too! I love the pattern on the pants too!

  7. Ticks. I’m not afraid of other bugs, just ticks. When I was about 10, I saw a stray dog covered in swollen ticks and it was gross. I think I PR’d my fastest run time getting away from that mangy mutt. Ever since then, I freak out at the mere mention of ticks. When I have to pull one off of my dog, I spend the rest of the day with my skin crawling.

  8. I am deathly afraid of heights. Sometimes the fear is almost paralyzing. I tried a rock-climbing class at REI and could not make it all the way up the high wall. 🙁

  9. My phobia is crickets. (or any kind of jumping insect) It’s a huge irrational fear and if a cricket happens to be in a room in the house, my theory is it can have the whole house. And I come from a world of superstitions and it’s bad luck to kill one in your house. I guess that’s why I have so much bad luck! 😉

  10. I have a phobia of going down steps. I can go up them fine, but I going down them is a whole different story. I guess that would be more a phobia of falling, but it only comes out when I’m going down a stairwell.

  11. I’m terrified of all insects, including butterflies. Yes, I know they have pretty wings. They also have creepy buggy faces and crawly buggy legs 🙁

    I signed up for 4x a week CrossFit and I somehow always feel like taking one of my 3 rest days when rope climbs show up in a WOD… hehe. Few steps at a time. I go to other WODs that scare me! But the rope will probably be one of the last things I conquer.

  12. I feel the same way about rope climbs! As soon as I get fatigued I just stop and scale them. I’m so afraid of falling off the rope, especially since I’m horrible at descending. Maybe one day I’ll be able to do all rope climbs in a workout.

  13. I am scared to death of mice! I don’t mind bugs, or spiders, or reptiles – but we saw a mouse in our apartment and I screamed and jumped up on a chair like they do in the movies. I was petrified!! Thankfully we’ve had an exterminator come out so hopefully the problem is resolved, but I still am scared I’m going to see one dart out from under a couch!

  14. I don’t know what the term is, but seriously do not like bridges. Really it’s just big suspension bridges that make me nervous. I’m okay when I’m a passenger going over a bridge, but if I have to drive over a big bridge I get incredibly anxious.

  15. Rope climbs are scary but the more you do them the easier they get, just like you said! Git up on that horse and do ’em! I am learning to love them too!

  16. Your dish looks just like what we had for dinner last night! Instead of rice however we used red potatoes. I have an intense fear of, okay I know this sounds really weird, but large objects (grain mills, water towers, etc.) at night or in the dark. I hate to see the lights and object. Does that sound weird? I am from Ohio so we have these all around us, it seriously freaks me out!

  17. While living alone, I was terrified that I would gouge my hand while cutting up vegetables and that I would then faint and bleed out on my kitchen floor. My irrational fear went even further in that I would be found by the neighbors after my cats started eating my face. Thankfully, once my boyfriend moved in, the fear has (mostly) subsided.

  18. Carwashes is my number 1 fear. Always hyperventilate when I’m in them.
    And I’m afaid of heights to some extent. I can climb up trees, ropes well enough, but I freeze up when I try to climb down.

  19. I am not afraid of heights, but something about going over water on a bridge sort of freaks me out(foot or car). I get dizzy/have a slight panic attack, especially if we have to stop in the car while on the bridge. I dont know when this started, but I really try to not let it get to me.

I’m actually not afraid of heights in the slightest – I love rock climbing, roller coasters, skydiving, bungee jumping, etc. I can’t even think of anything that is a phobia because I am kind of an adrenaline junkie/thrill seeker! I actually do get kind of nervous when I’m swimming in an ocean where the waves are breaking. One time as a kid I got sucked under a wave and panicked and couldn’t get back up for a while so I am slightly afraid of big waves making me drown.

  21. I have a big fear of spiders too! I got bit by a brown recluse my senior year of high school, and ever since I have been really afraid. I also just realized about a month ago that I am very afraid of heights. I never thought I was until I was at an outdoor adventure course, and going up high really scared me!

  22. I never thought about that, how do you get back down the rope once you’ve climbed up? Do you climb back down the same way you got up? I think that would make me nervous too… I also have an irrational fear of box jumps. Even if its suuuuuuper low. I just can’t.

    I’m absolutely terrified of heights. On our honeymoon, we went ziplining in Costa Rica and I ONLY did it as a “once in a lifetime thing”! I felt sick almost the whole time, but now I can say I did it! lol

  24. You seriously make me want to give CrossFit another shot! I had a tough time balancing the price w the fact that I’d also be spending time running, aka not strictly working out there. I wish it wasn’t so pricey here in D.C….

  25. I’m scared of dead animals and frogs! I hate seeing small dead animals on the side of the road. I just get the chills when I have to see it. I’ve been afraid of frogs since I was younger and my brother has the same phobia.

  26. Oh man, I’m also terrified of heights! I cannot get into a ski lift without someone I know for fear of having a panic attack and fainting causing myself to fall to my death on the mountain below. Kind of ridiculous! I am also terrified of flying. I really wish I could do something to help me overcome this fear!

  27. I want those pants so bad!! I’m trying to figure out a special occasion to buy them though, since I don’t necessarily ‘need’ them…and unfort. my b-day is in Nov. Hah.

    I am scared of heights too. Not crazy bad, but it gets pretty irrational (but it has to be open heights, like climbing a tree-not flying or anything like that). I also hate/scared of snakes. ugh.

  28. Cute workout outfit. 🙂 That jambalaya recipe looks really good. The only meat I eat is chicken/turkey (I cheat with bacon but shh!) so I wonder what it would taste like with some TR Turkey Sausage. I have never tried Turkey Sausage… hmm… could be on the meal plan for next week.

    Fears? I am a HUGE worry wort when it comes to someone breaking in my house. I can sleep at my apartment if Jon isn’t there…. I would say that is my biggest fear/phobias other than that… I have a tiny fear of using Escalators and Elevators.. haha I am strange I know.

  30. Dynamax balls!!! I teach a Dynamax Boot Camp and it has easily become one of my favorite classes and the Dynamax balls have become one of my most favorite gym “tools”. Also, I’ve commented on every blog that has reviewed those pants and all i have to say is : I.want.a.pair! haha

  31. I will have to go with you on the spider fear, I hate them. Also, I love swimming but would have a hard time if I ever got in shape enough to do a triathlon. Once I’m really far out from shore I get this fear that comes over me and have a really hard time staying focused on swimming. Also seaweed, I can’t stand the stuff!
