Some Exciting Race News

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

I have some exciting news to share with you guys! On June 1, 2013, I’m running the ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon & 10K with the ZOOMA race series!

Never heard of ZOOMA? It’s an all-women’s race series that puts on boutique (aka “fancy”) events in various destinations around the country with a fun girls’ weekend in mind. Basically, a running vacation with your girlfriends. Rumor has it that their post-race celebrations typically include champagne, massages, jewelry, and cupcakes. Umm… sign me up!

In addition to running the race in Annapolis, I’ll be part of a panel of national bloggers to help advise ZOOMA with their goal of hosting events that cater to the real needs and wants of female runners. If you have something you’d like to see at one of their races, feel free to leave a comment on this post. I’ll be sure to let the ZOOMA folks know!

ZOOMA has 5 upcoming race events already on their calendar and they’re gearing up to unveil another exciting race location. Where do you think they’ll go next? Submit a race location guess here for a chance to win a swag bag from ZOOMA’s mystery location!

I’m so honored and excited to be part of the ZOOMA series and working with such amazing women. Plus, the Annapolis race sounds like such a blast! If you’re in the area and thinking about running the ZOOMA race, please let me know. We’re planning an meet up, and I’d love to meet ya!

We had a nearly-empty jar of peanut butter in the house (surprise, surprise), so I used it to make “Oatmeal” Minus the Oats in a Jar.

In the mix:

  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 3/4 cup liquid egg whites
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

I guess my breakfast didn’t hold me over very well because, just a couple of hours later, I got hungry again, so I ate a Greek yogurt with chopped apple, sliced almonds, and raisins.

I wasn’t super hungry when lunch rolled around, but I ate something because I knew there was no way I could make it until dinnertime without eating. I had a turkey wrap with grainy mustard and pickles inside.

Question of the Day

What’s the coolest amenity/bonus/swag you’ve ever seen at a race? What amenity/bonus/swag would you like to see at a race?

P.S. Check out my newest piece over on the “The Supplemental” blog: Tips for Easy, On-the-Go Healthy Living.

  1. My mom did almost 60 marathons when I was a kid, and I saw a LOT of swag bags. My MIL works in Hollywood and I see her award show swag bags. Let’s just say, race swag sucks compared to the fancy hollywood swag. Hollywood swag bags have fun bakery goods, nice lotions, etc… I’m not a fancy frilly girl, but shoot, getting a free sample of some fancy stuff sometimes might persuade me to actually buy the product. But a free shot block or gel packet, meh, I’m over it.

  2. I ran zooma Annapolis this year and LOVED it! I’ll be running again next year! Definitely keep me in the loop about any meet ups you all plan in Annapolis! 🙂

  3. I ran the Zooma 10k in Annapolis this year. It was a great event and well done. We enjoyed wine and a lunch afterwards. Definitely a race I’d do again!

  4. Coolest swag has to go to the Wild Rover race series in Haverhill/Lowell/Lawrence, MA. It’s a 3-race series of 3, 4, and 5 miles. The first two races offer long-sleeve tech shirts and the third is short sleeved. Each race earns you a medal, and all 3 connect to make one monster medal! It’s the 3 weeks before St. Patrick’s Day, so it’s all Irish-themed and the medal this past year was a shamrock with Celtic knots behind the race logos. I haven’t been racing long, but the swag from these 3 races combined are my favorite by far! Of course, if a race offers a beer at the end, I’m in!

I’m also doing the SheROX triathlon in Devens next month, and that has a pre-race mentor program included as part of the registration fee. I’m a little disappointed in the program since I haven’t felt particularly mentored as a newbie, but it has great potential.

  5. I did the Nike Womens Marathon in SF last year and the finisher prize was a Tiffany necklace..pretty cool, but a massage would’ve been FAB!!!

  6. Have you ever been to Annapolis? I live there and can recommend some fun stuff if you’re not familiar with the area! I’m a new reader but have already tried a bunch of your recipes and diet staples and I feel great after cutting out most of the processed foods I was eating!

  7. I would like to see a jacket in a swag bag and a nice water bottle and maybe a voucher for free running shoes! I am asking for way too much. Haha. I love pickles whenever i eat pickles I think about the little rascal’s song I gotta pickle 🙂

  8. That race sounds awesome!!! Wish I lived closer! I think the idea of having a fun girl’s weekend centered around fitness is wonderful. I have never been to a race with a particularly memorable after-party…too bad!!! I’ve heard the chocolate races are pretty awesome-not sure I would want all of that after a race but who knows!

  9. YAY! That race sounds so fun, and I’ve heard that ZOOMA does put on good races and has good swag too 🙂

I love swag that includes samples from vendors, good shirts (quality fabric and fit), and yummy food at the end of the race (whole grain fresh baked bread, chocolate milk, fruit.)

I love the half marathon distance–it’s a good one! Currently training for a Half IM, so there’s a half marathon at the end of it. Fun stuff! p.s. I LOVE turkey wraps–so yumm!

  10. I ran Zooma Austin this year and it was awesome! Definitely worth it for the free champagne alone… Don’t get too excited about the jewelry, the necklace they gave us in Austin was not really that special and we didn’t get medals so that was kind of sad. Other than that though it was super fun and a really awesome girls weekend 🙂

  11. Congrats! I really hope to be part of the Zooma Great Lakes event next year.
I think coolest thing in a swag bag was the winter hat from a 5k. Wisconsin=lots of use for a winter hat. Since I stick to a lot of small-town races, the shirts are always entertaining. Like the “Cow Chip Classic”. Yep, it’s a picture of a cartooned cow piece of poo…worse yet, the shirt is a white t-shirt and the colors are brown and orange. That one pretty much stays at the bottom of my shirt pile.

  12. Shoot, I apparently missed the Atlanta one 🙁 I’ll have to keep checking and see if a new race comes close by again soon, they sound awesome! I ran a 5K a few weeks ago that gave out dry fit shirts at the end. Pretty nice score! I honestly love all the little treats from vendors, it’s always fun going through your swag bag once you get home!

  13. That race sounds great! It would be awesome if they had a sports bra fitting area as part of the one of the pre or post race events, or maybe include a voucher for a sports bra. I know I’m always looking for a good new sports bra, and what’s more female specific?

  14. I would say anything in a swag bag that is conscious of food allergies! I had to toss some things from the Chicago Rock N Roll bag, and could pick up very little swag from the expo, because of my gluten and soy intolerances.

  15. Congratulations on the Zooma race! You will love the course, it’s absolutely beautiful. I ran it this year (the 10k) and live just outside of Annapolis. It’s a breathtaking course! There are also some amazing waterfront restaurants that you’ll be able to enjoy post race. 🙂

  16. Tina! I’ve been trying to register for Annapolis…and it says it’s not available til Summer. But it is summer. Did I miss something!?!

  17. At mile 10 of a half marathon I ran in Gainesville, FL there were Girl Scouts with a giant bowl of…THIN MINTS!!!!
I literally stopped running and asked if I could have one haha!

I think every race should have Thin Mints and Ice Cream, forget beer and bagels!

  18. I love Annapolis and ran the race 3 years ago. Definitely doing the race next June and would love to meet you!! I think the post race should be at Pussers bar on the water 🙂

  19. I ran the Zooma Atlanta half this year. The course was very disorganized and hard to navigate because it was several loops in a small area and there was a 5k also so it was confusing. That isn’t really the race organizers fault, just probably not the best venue for the race. As far as the swag, the shirt was nice and you get a necklace at the end rather than a medal (which I never wear, but still kind of neat) . They didnt give prizes for 2nd and 3rd place in each age group, which was a disappointment since I placed 3rd in mine. For the price of the race, I think there is a lot more they could do.

    1. @Nicole:

Hi Nicole, thanks for your feedback. In our Atlanta post race meeting we discussed ways to decrease the confusion between the different race distances. We have also revamped our AG awards. We appreciate the feedback and hope to see you at another ZOOMA event soon.

  20. Never heard of Zooma–sounds awesome, though! I’m running my first half marathon this October and it’s the Divas race, which also has champagne (and hot firemen) after. Sounds like good swag to me 😉

  21. I live near Annapolis and was thinking about doing this race! I’m sure it will be a beautiful run! Hmmm best recent race swag I got was a wine glass (va lees berg half) and marys organic gluten free crackers (totally random but I love them and they are expensive!!!)

  22. Zooma Annapolis is so great! I ran it this year & two years ago also. I can’t wait to run with you! I run in Annapolis every week and it’s just beautiful!

  23. Tina! I’m from Annapolis, and am so so excited that you’re running the race there next summer! It’s a great event, and I know you’ll have a blast! Keep us posted as it gets closer to the race date, and I’d love to recommend some places to check out, it’s such a great town!

  24. A certain trail running org in PA (Pretzel City Sports) is known for giving pint glasses (sometimes filled with beer) which are way more useful than a medal that hangs on my wall. Although I do like my Hershey Kiss medal from the Hershey Half. They also gave out 13.1 stickers for your car (with a little kiss as the decimal point!). I could have done without the chocolate milk at the finish line though, no matter how good it is for recovery…

Why is it always race shirts? Why not give out a running skirt or some good shorts or capris? Or some flip flops to limp around in once you unlace? Swag bags and goodies could get way more creative for the same cost!
