Second Dinner

I’m a big fan of Second Breakfast and partake frequently, but I never participated in Second Dinner until last night. I think I like it.

Around 5:00 PM, I ate an early dinner: half of a toasted sandwich with sautéed mushrooms and melted gruyere cheese inside. It was inspired by the Gruyere & Mushroom Pressed Sandwich from Sandwhich in Chapel Hill. Mmm! Gruyere is so amazing.

On the side: roasted broccoli and arugula with balsamic vinegar drizzled on top.

A little while later, Mal suggested grabbing a beer and watching the Bruins playoff game at the Abington Ale House. I’m always up for a beer, so I agreed.

While watching the game, I munched on a bunch of pretzels with pimento cheese dip.

To drink, I ordered a Long Trail IPA.

Mal ordered the same beer, but a much larger version of it. Of course, like the nerds we are, we checked to see if the bigger beer was the better deal. It was $0.03 cheaper per ounce. Yep, we’re dorks.

Then, all of a sudden, I got really hungry again. So, I ordered a side of sweet potato fries. They hit the spot.

Once we left the Abington Ale House, Mal and I went in search of a couple of magazines that I’m featured in next month: Woman’s Day and People StyleWatch. May is a big month for CNC!

We didn’t find the May issue of People StyleWatch, but we found the Woman’s Day issue!

IMG_0006 (640x480)

As you may know, I’m working with Woman’s Day and Eggland’s Best on their “Live Well” Challenge, which includes this great two-page spread. Cool, right? I also appeared in the January issue with different healthy living tips.

The “Live Well” Challenge also includes a Facebook page where you can submit your favorite healthy lifestyle tips. The best ones will be featured in an upcoming issue of Woman’s Day! I know you want to enter!

Breakfast

This morning, I brought back an oldie, but goodie recipe: Oatmeal Pancake! I used to eat Oatmeal Pancakes all of the time… I don’t know what happened! I actually ran out of oats, so I used oat bran instead. It worked just fine!

I topped my Oat Bran Pancake with peanut butter and banana slices.

Feel Great Weight

I frequently receive questions about the number of calories I consumed when I was trying to lose weight, and readers are usually surprised when they hear my answer. Check out this week’s post to find out: How Many Calories Do You Need Each Day?

Question of the Day

Are you generally a three-square-meals-a-day person or do you eat smaller meals and snacks throughout the day? Have you always eaten this way?

P.S. Bostonians: Pinkberry is opening at the Prudential today!!! To celebrate, they’re offering free froyo from 4:00 – 7:00 PM!

  1. Congrats on the magazines!! I’m a 3 square meals kind of girl with one or two snacks thrown in.
I’ve tried eating more smaller meals but it feels like I’m snacking with the small amounts and I don’t ever feel satisfied.

  2. That oatmeal pancake looks delicious. Love that idea! Congratulations on the magazine features. How awesome to walk into a store in search of that.
I always differ with what I eat. Usually I am snacking all day, but only really have 3 big meals.

  3. okay, you just gave me a heart attack-the bruins playoff game is tonight-my husband is beyond excited-I thought we had missed it! congrats on the magazine articles!

  4. I’m pretty glued to 3 regular meals and 2 small snacks a day. It’s worked great for me for several years now.

    Congrats on the magazines!

  5. Congrats on the magazines and thanks again for answering my email earlier this week!

I tend to eat small meals throughout the day because my stomach is happier that way. If I eat heavy meals, especially dinner, my good old IBS flares up.

I am trying to eat a good balance of carbs, good fats and protein.

  6. Yay for Pinkberry! I love any fro-yo place, although 16 Handles in NYC is my fave (when you come back, you must try). I also love your contributions to Health Mag. It’s actually my favorite magazine in that category. I feel like it gives me the most take-aways in terms of things I can apply to my everyday life.

I’m a huge snacker – I never stop snacking. I’m snacking right now. On carrots ironically. I’ll probably have cake later. haha

  7. I’m a snacker, so I tend to eat a lot of little meals…I usually have one meal of a “normal” size around lunch, since that’s when I’m the most hungry….but then, the rest of the day is mini meals….I get hungry often so I have to make sure I don’t go too long without a little nibble! 🙂

  8. I used to eat a lot of smaller meals throughout the day but it was hard for me to always keep my meals small – leading to weight gain. Now I eat three meals a day with a couple snacks, usually mid-morning and afternoon.

  9. I’m a six meals a day person. All my meals are pretty small and then I eat mini meals throughout the day. I’m small and need to keep eating to get extra calories before my metabolism burns it up. Its the only way I’ve learned to maintain a healthy weight.

  10. I can only manage my weight with three squares a day. If I’m hungry between meals, I (try to) stick to fruits and vegetables. I like sitting down to a satisfying meal and the way my daily calories spread out, if I have one or two substantial snacks, then all my meals also have to look like snacks. This just doesn’t agree with my psyche.

Congrats on your magazines!!! That’s HUGE!

  11. each day is different, but i tend to be a 1 ginormous meal, 1 regular meal, and 1 snack kinda eater. i like to socialize and eat a lot so that’s usually the big one.

i can’t believe you have a pinkberry opening. here in LA (where they started) they’re all closing – even the first one, which i remember going to with my husband and being the only customers!!!

  12. I eat three larger meals per day and two more medium sizes snacks. If I don’t eat every 3 hours or so I’ll get so hungry I’ll just eat everything in site so I try to keep that in check with snacks. Meals and snacks always contain protein which helps keep me full!

  13. Congrats on your magazine features, that is so cool! If I happen to see the mags at the store I will surely take a look.

I graze all day and eat many “mini-meals”. I hate eating a huge meal for lunch because it makes me tired instead of energized. That leads me to being un-productive during the day! Plus I love variety so the more kinds of food I can eat throughout the day, the better.

  14. Great question. I guess I am kind of weird in that I eat smaller snacks throughout the day, but one bigger meal in the evening. I tend to be not so hungry early in the day, so I try to listen to my stomach and eat when it wants food!

  15. I eat 3 meals and 2 snacks daily. I don’t think it is nerdy at all to check for the thriftier deal! 🙂 Nothing wrong with being frugal–those pennies add up! lol. I do the same thing!

  16. I usually eat three meals a day and have two small snacks. I eat breakfast at around 6:30 so I usually want a banana around 10. Then I usually have a yogurt at around 3:30 or else I find myself too hungry when I get home from work.

  17. I’m a total grazer and mindless muncher, so I like to eat smaller meals and plenty of snacks throughout the day during the work week. On the weekends, when I’m home, I’m more likely to eat a few larger meals and therefore less snacks.

  18. PS – I just read your calories article. I think that is is SUCH common misconception that to lose weight, you need to eat a very low calorie diet. Most o fthe time when people need to lose some weight, they are taking in way too many calories for their body (just like you referred to). Our bodies NEED the 2000’ish calories a day to work properly. On days that I don’t exercise, I eat somewhere around 1800-2000 calories (I’m estimating here). However, on days that I run/workout, bring on the extra calories!!!

      1. @Tina: I’m happy to hear this! I’ve been using Livestrong to track my calories, and my recommended calories to lose a pound a week is about 1400! It just feels way too low. If I’m kind of a sloth that day it isn’t so bad, but I work out hard, and I need fuel!! I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing, trying to fill up on healthy stuff and working out, even if I go over Livestrong’s recommended amount.

I typically have three meals a day and one or two snacks depending on when I eat breakfast and dinner. I like to keep myself kind steady all day, because if I get too hungry, I am prone to overeating.

  19. I usually eat 3 meals and 1-2 snacks. (I always mean to eat 2, but sometimes I lose track of time!) Though I have definitely been known to partake in a ‘second dinner’ every once and awhile…especially if I’m hungry around 5, and have dinner plans scheduled for quite a bit later. I’ll have a piece of bread with PB and chia seeds, etc. to tide be over until my actual dinner.

  20. I try to make my snacks fruit and veg and have 3 well-balanced, nutrient-dense meals most days of the week. Whenever this isn’t satisfying or sustaining me, it’s usually because I’m not eating properly and am overloading in one area (ie too many carbs, or lots of veggies but no protein or dairy…or of course, too much fat or sugar in one day). It just works for me as a way to maintain awareness of how I’m eating without being too focused on it. Sometimes when I have a snacky day, although I enjoy it, I really feel like I ate a lot more than I would have by sticking to meals.

  21. Hi Tina!
So, I’ve been a reader for awhile but don’t normally comment. Love the blog though and I’ll definitely be purchasing your book!

So, first I’ll answer your question: I eat small meals throughout the day. I find that it keeps my energy levels up and I never feel weighed down by three heavy meals.

On another note, I went to the Woman’s Day facebook page to submit my healthy tip. I didn’t realize it would show up as my status! I got onto my Facebook page and had likes and comments to my healthy tip! Kind of silly but just thought I’d let you know. A few more people inspired to live a healthy life style 🙂

  22. I saw your tips in People Style Watch-the entire back page! And as a person who reads magazines back to front (i think its a lefty thing) it was the first thing i saw!! Congrats on the book and best of luck to you 🙂

  23. So awesome to see yourself in a magazine! Dream come true!
I have turned into a three squares girl. I tried the six mini meals thing when I was in high school, but it just totally doesn’t work with class schedules or eating out.
