Running Medals

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Check out the collection of running medals that I’ve acquired!

To date, I’ve run 23 road races, but I only have 10 medals to show for it. Of course, not every race I’ve run has given out a medal at the end of it. I actually used throw away my medals. (I once told Caitlin this, and I thought she was going to have a heart attack!) Ok, let me explain”¦

When I got injured after running my first half marathon, I thought I would never run long distances again. I spent months and months in physical therapy and never really recovered, so I spent a lot of time angry and frustrated that I couldn’t run.

When it came time to move (again) into a new apartment, instead of packing my medals, I just tossed them in the trash (like I do with a lot of stuff). I honestly didn’t think running as hobby was in my future. Now, I obviously regret not saving them, especially since I won’t ever get back my very first road race medal or my first half marathon medal. Wah. This makes me sad.

Well, the day that I crossed the finish line of the Rock ”˜N’ Roll Arizona Marathon and earned my 26.2-mile medal, I knew that I would never ever throw away a race medal again. No matter what the distance, a medal is hard-earned and deserves to be celebrated. It should not be tossed in the trash.

Up until this afternoon, I proudly displayed my medals on the corner of my dresser mirror. I get dressed there every morning, so they often make me smile and remind me of my running accomplishments.

A few weeks ago, however, I noticed that my medals weren’t as prominently displayed as I thought. It turns out that you can’t really see them unless you stand in front of my dresser.

Of course, this wasn’t a big deal, but when Ali blogged about her new Running Medal Display Rack, I knew it was exactly what I needed to show off my medals, so I purchased the same one (in a different color) and hung it in my office.

How cute is this thing?!

Check ”˜em out! Now, I can see my running medals in all of their glory! This makes me happy.

What do you do with your race medals?

Mal and I took a break from working this afternoon to eat lunch together outside on the back porch. I had a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich with mayo, sliced tomato, and a pickle on the side.

I also ate a bunch of Kettle chips, which ended up in my sandwich. I love the crunch!

Murphy kept us company on the porch and watched closely for dropped pieces of food. He’s such a little scavenger.

Pug owners: Does your dog often sit with his/her leg out to the side like this or is Murphy just weird?

A couple of hours later, I snacked on a caramel Oikos with chocolate-covered sunflower seeds mixed in. Mmm! It was the perfect sweet snack.

I’m doing a little more work and then taking the rest of the night off to relax! Wahoo!

  1. Meatball(my pug) always sits like that; and the butt sit thing cracks me up! If only my chubby belly could be as cute when I sit! Pugs are the best… I noticed you were eating sunflower seed butter recently – which I love, but haven’t been able to find any for less than $7 a jar! YIKES! Have you found any cheaper?

  2. I love this display!! I also really like the display just like this for bibs, because I keep all of my bibs. My medals are on one big board I use and also includes the bibs I’ve had for the last few races I have done. It’s not much, but I like seeing them all up together and it really gives me a sense of accomplishment.

  3. I’m so jealous of all your medals! I have a ton from high school track and I have them hung up on a rack at my childhood home so my lucky Mom gets to stare at them everyday! Haha

  4. My dog sits like that too. I think it’s because he is long, but with short legs (pitt/hound mix). If he sat like a regular dog his front paws wouldn’t touch the ground! haha

  5. Omg, I LOVE the medal display!!!!!!! Will have to invest in that…what a terrific idea. The hubs and I have two pugs and yes, they sit like that and it never fails to crack us up. I also love the “butt sit” that Amy @ Healthy Hungry mentioned. Gotta love pugs…make us laugh a million times a day 🙂

  6. Don’t have any medals from my races just lots of t-shirts. I have enough to send off and have a nice wall hanging made or perhaps a quilt. I am proud of each and every one. Love to see your medals hanging on your wall. Quite the achievement.

  7. The Running Rack is adorable! I am getting one as well. I only have one medal so far and one trophy for coming 2nd female in a 5K race. I keep them at my desk at work next to pictures of family and friends.

  8. Nice hardware! I don’t have as many medals as you do, but I definitely keep them – here there and everywhere. I put my marathon medal, bib and photo in a nice shadow box.

  9. I love how neatly your medals are now displayed! I have mine hanging on a variety I doorknobs all through my apartment! I might have to investigate a medal display thing….

  10. Are those chocolate covered sunflower seeds from Trader Joes? They look awfully familiar 😉 Speaking of all things good and Trader Joes-y, have you tried their Lemon and Ginger Snap ice cream? It is quite possibly one of the more heavenly things they’ve decided to bring into stock.

  11. I’ve never noticed my pug sitting like that! I think they all have their little quirks though! Is Murphy obsessed with belly rubs? If Stewie is laying down & someone walks over to him, he automatically rolls over; he can’t get enough! In fact I was rubbing his belly at 5:40 this morning before I went to the gym!

  12. I love that rack! Thank you so much I’ve been looking for one for my race medals and that is so cute…. think I’ll be ordering one. Great gift idea for my running buddy as well!

  13. My boston terrier Myles sits like that all the time! Does Murphy also sprawl his back legs out completely like a frog when he’s hot?! Gotta love em. I thing pugs and terriers are very similar in their personalities too.

  14. My big 90 pound bloodhouse sits like that too 🙂 Cracks me up! And I have no idea what to do with all my medals. They’re getting out of control!

  15. Okay seriously…just stop the running…running that much just freaks me out…a person should not be physically able to do that…lol. JUST kidding…keep it up! That’s awesome!!!

  16. That’s a gorgeous medal rack! I wish I had saved all my medals. I ran TONS of half and 1 milers as a kid. I actually won quite a few! My parents were runners so they dragged me to races as a kid. I wish I’d kept it up as a teenager, but I didn’t pick it up again until I was in my 20’s. I’d love to display the ones I’m accumulating right now.

  17. Tina,
I’m glad you’ve chosen not to get rid of your medals anymore, and I love the display. I totally understand why you chose to after having such an ordeal with your injury. But for those out there who do choose to get rid of their post race medals, rather than throwing them out, there’s an organization called “medals4mettle”. The medals donated to the organization are given to children and people fighting life threatening illnesses, or as the website states, those who are in a race of their own to continue to live. I think it’s just a great idea for those who no longer want to keep their medals, to donate to such a wonderful organization.

  18. OMG Love the display! Right now, I just have my 2 little medals hanging on a thumb tack. Can you believe my first half marathon didn’t have medals (they didn’t have gu on the course either, nor did they have gatorade until mile 11, and they had already packed up all the food by the time I finished and there were more people after me. Not exactly the best race but I digress!). Anyway! Can’t wait til I have more and I can display them a little nicer. I might have to get or make one of these cute hangers!

  19. Our pug, Louie, always got in trouble at obedience class because he was such a “sloppy sitter”! It’s nice to know that he’s not the only one!

  20. I have always loved the running mantel. I keep my medals but come to think of it, I don’t really know where they are. 🙁 I need to find them and get on displaying those babies.

  21. My shih tzu sits like that as well. He also lies on his belly, with his two back legs to the side or back straight ha

  22. Nice rack! (hehe) A couple of my girlfriends ran the San Francisco marathon this last weekend and were talking about using their race medals as coasters. Because, you know, every marathoner deserves a beer after their hard work! I’ll have to show them this option, too!

  23. I definitely sympathize with you..I’ve thrown many a medal and trophy away! I guess I didn’t think running was that “cool” back then? I won my age division in a particular race 5 years in a row and I don’t have a single one of those trophies left 🙁
I always put chips in my sandwich! I am a big Cape Cod chip fan 😀

  24. Our pug, Olivia, sits like this all the time! Usually she goes right from this sitting pose to laying down, rolling over, and exposing her tummy for rubs. She will lay down for strangers for belly rubs-it’s so funny! Anyway, I think it’s just a pug thing!
