Runner Favorites from Vitamin Shoppe

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Hello, hello!

I had the opportunity to go on a “shoppe-ing” spree at Vitamin Shoppe earlier this week and it was quite a lot of fun. I went to the Hingham location in the Shipyard where Will, a Vitamin Shoppe Health Enthusiast, helped me find all of the items on my list and then gave me some great ideas for new products to try.

I told Will that I was a runner, so he kept that in mind as he made recommendations, so between the two of us, I ended up with an awesome haul of products that will help me both as a runner and athlete. That said, here’s what I picked as my runner favorites from the Vitamin Shoppe!

Runner Favorites from Vitamin Shoppe

But, first, I need to tell you guys about the big BOGO sale happening at the Vitamin Shoppe right now! From now until May 9th, all Vitamin Shoppe and BodyTech brand products are buy one, get one 50% off, in-store and online. (Discount taken on a 2nd item of equal or lesser value.) FYI: Vitamin Shoppe is on Ebates, which means soooo many savings! Yeehaw!

Quest Bars – We love Quest Bars in our house, so these were on the top of my list. They’re the perfect snack for when you want a little something sweet (heated up in the microwave, of course), and they’re loaded with protein so they’re a great post-workout treat too. At Vitamin Shoppe, you can make your own mix pack of flavors for the same price as a box of a single flavor. How cool is that?!

Cod liver oil – This was also on my shopping list. I typically buy the cod liver oil from Green Pasture (here’s why I like it), but I decided to give the Vitamin Shoppe brand a try. It’s not fermented, but it’s gluten-, dairy-, soy-, and nut-free as well. (Here’s a helpful post about the difference between fermented cod liver oil and un-fermented cod liver oil.) It’s also buy one, get one 50% right now!

Smoothie mix-ins – Even though these were on my shopping list, I didn’t end up buying the smoothie ingredients that I originally had in mind (i.e. chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp hearts), but only because I found other fun products instead. Even still, I wanted to mention them since Vitamin Shoppe has all sorts of great options to boost the nutrient value of your smoothies.

Vitamin Shoppe brand chia seeds are buy one, get one 50% off, so if you bought some now, you wouldn’t need to restock for quite awhile. Holy chia seeds!

Garden of Life Organic Plant Protein – A new favorite! I actually just blogged about this the other day. I didn’t end up getting some this time, but only because Will suggested another product that he thought I might like.

Amazing Grass Green Superfood – Will said he uses the chocolate flavor in his smoothies and really likes it, so I decided to try it out. There’s all sorts of healthy stuff inside, and I drink protein shakes a few times a week, so I figured I could throw in a scoop for some added nutrients. I tried it yesterday morning for the first time and really liked it. It’s not too “grassy” with a good amount of chocolate flavor. I definitely plan to keep on using it.

GU – I already had a small stash of GU at home, so I only grabbed a couple more packets for future training. I have a half marathon on my calendar in June!

Nuun – I love this stuff so much and drink it all the time, so I bought another tube of Nuun. The Vitamin Shoppe had a few new flavors that I haven’t tried yet, so I went with the Wild Berry flavor.

ALLTHESNACKS – When you’re running a lot, you need fuel. For me, this means snacks all the time, so I asked Will for a few new recommendations and here’s what he suggested: Epic Bites Uncured Bacon (tasty – just like bacon), The Complete Cookie (LOVE SO MUCH AND CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT), Bonk Breaker Almond Cherry Chunk (reminded me of a Quest Bar – delicious heated up), and  22 Days Nutrition Walnut Fudge Brownie (my pick and it was just okay).

Question of the Day

Your turn! What’s your favorite running/fitness product or supplement?

This post is sponsored by FitFluential on behalf of Vitamin Shoppe.

  1. I have been waiting to see what you snagged, thanks for sharing! I love Quest bars and Amazing Grass Green Superfood, awesome products that are good quality without tasting like it. And thank you for the tip on Ebates – best news ever!

  2. Epsom salts all the way! For the bath obviously! Love bee pollen, hemp seeds and hemp protein powder and love cacao nibs and chia seeds as smoothie mix ins! I do take Vitamin D as well as magnesium…my two musts!

  3. I’m usually pretty own on supplements, and bars an such, BUT this is a really well timed sale!

I am heading to Peru soon and looking to bring bars and such to have as easy snacks. I need to stock up on great ones!

  4. I’ve been loving amazing grass! I have the original flavor and it’s really good in a smoothie. I’ve also been getting into Quest Bars (just had a cookies and cream one!). They’re really good, but I haven’t tried them nuked yet.

One of my favorite drinks to get during training is tart cherry juice. It helps reduce inflammation and soreness, especially after long runs. It’s the best!

    1. The chocolate is so much better. I never could get behind the regular Amazing Grass– way to grassy– but this stuff is tasty!

  5. Amazing Grass is my favorite! I usually use the Amazing Meal Chocolate in my smoothies (it does taste a little “grassy”) and the pomegranate mango is awesome, too! I just tried the Garden of Life Raw vanilla and looooove it with peanut butter/banana/almond milk smoothies.

  6. Ive had that 22 days bar too and I wasn’t a big fan. I always love places like GNC and Vitamin Shoppe to grab new health things. Those EPIC bars are super weird tasting to me but an interesting concept. Thanks for sharing!

  7. I think that that plant protein powder tastes super chalky. They were 50% off at my grocery store so I bought one I’m more cheap than picky when it comes to protein, but this stuff is kind of nasty. I only have 2 giant containers to go through though . . .

  8. I use the Amazing Grass green powder Original flavor in my smoothies. It does not taste good on it’s own but works well mixed into smoothies. I’ll have to give the chocolate one a try!

  9. Tina,
Your posts are the best! I love quest bars; Creating a variety pack is almost as great as creating one’s own 6 pack of beer!!!

  10. I’ve never been in a Vitamin Shoppe even though there is one within walking distance of my house! I’m interested to know if they are less pushy than GNC- those sales people always want me to join the GNC club. And I almost feel intimidated to be there as though GNC is only for bodybuilders, you know?

  11. If you’re a chocolate peppermint fan, try the Amazing Grass chocolate peppermint flavor around Christmas time. It’s INSANE. I love it. I use a lot of flax seeds in my cooking/baking but I prefer the oil for smoothies. I’m also a big fan of the honey stinger chews (flavors like cherry cola, pink lemonade, and cherry blossom) but the trick is to put them in the freezer. They get cold and a little more chewy but they are the perfect pre or post-workout snack and so refreshing. Sometimes I just eat them as snack. Beware, they’re addictive!

  12. I’ve only used Nuun once after a long run and I really enjoyed it. I’m thinking about adding it into my recovery routine once the summer months roll in and I’m sweating buckets daily. By far, my favorite supplement is Progenex Recovery. I take it after most crossfit workouts or after long runs, and I love it. Most protein powders make me feel junky or bloated, but Progenex is 1000x better. I’d be curious to try the SFH Recovery. I’ve only tried their Pure whey and hated it.

  13. I love honey stinger chews! Especially the pink lemonade flavor and fruit smoothie flavor. We also use them when we are hiking or camping for an easy to carry burst of energy.

  14. I’m not a big supplement person but Quest bars are delish. I used to eat them daily until they started hurting my stomach from all the fiber! Now I just eat them on occasion (which is good for my wallet too haha).

  15. Garden of Life RAW protein is my go-to protein powder. I’ve had Amazing Grass in the past and should incorporate it back in, though it is expensive. I’ve been taking fish oil for the past few years (my PCP suggests it over CLO due to the processing) as well as vitamin D (I’m chronically deficient, no matter what I do) and magnesium (helps so much with muscle cramps!).
I really need to try some jerky already! That bacon sounds good!

  16. I’m just doing a little research on supplements. It’s hard to find what’s best because the options are endless, so this review was really helpful for me. The green superfoods definitely sounds something I will try out. Thanks!

  17. I can’t stop eating the Quest Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I haven’t even tried warming it up. I am interested in trying the Smores and Brownie.

  18. I was going to get the Quest Bars for my hubby but they have Sucralose (Splenda). I don’t think artificial sweeteners are safe.
I like the Bonk Breakers, much better quality ingredients!
