RNR Arizona: After the Marathon

Now that my race recap has been published, here’s what Mal and I did after the marathon:

Ice bath.

Please note: I am getting into a bathtub full of cold water. Mal hadn’t even added the ice yet. He found the whole thing hysterical. I’m such a wuss.

Once I had a beer in my hand, Mal dumped in the ice. It was painfully cold, but it definitely helped my sore muscles. I’m barely sore today!

Drank beers.

Ate food.

Mal and I shared a chicken pesto panini and some baked mac & cheese from the hotel bar. We had big plans to watch the Pats game at a nearby sports bar, but neither of wanted to walk to it after running 26.2 miles.

Went to bed.

We were supposed to meet up with some blog buddies for dinner, but Mal and I ended up climbing into bed around 7:00 pm. We were exhausted, but the feeling of accomplishment was totally worth it.

What are your post-race rituals?


  1. BRAVE woman!!! After one of my races I tried to do an ice bath and only got 1 toe in before I gave up. 🙂 My post-race ritual is often a muscle relaxer, massage and a swim the next day. Those all help.

  2. Oh gosh, those bath photos are hilarious! Well done to you guys for resting in your hotel. As someone who’s never run a race, and barely exercises (whoops), I think if I ran a race the post-race ritual would be waiting for the apocalypse 😉

  3. Eating is definitely a great post race ritual and I definitely “need” a beer or a glass of wine in the next 8 hours following. 🙂 You’re a brave soul for getting in that ice bath. I’ve never been able to do that.

  4. Ice bath….no kidding, saved my life. I would never run a marathon w/o an ice bath afterwards. I am going to try a beer next time too!!

  5. I think I made a big mistake in not icing after my marathon on Saturday. My hotel didn’t have a tub (just a shower), but I should have at least used bags of ice. I was pretty sore for the two days after!

  6. omg. The ice bath I took after my marathon was more painful than the marathon itself. If I remember correctly. And the next day when I woke up I could not move my body at all.

    love that your holding a beer in the tub though. Could you even enjoy it?!

  7. i hate ice baths too! i swear they give me frost bite!

    after a marathon i’m content to curl up on a couch with a big ‘ol burger! its become my tradition. 🙂
