Happy Monday, folks! 😎

My day is already off to an interesting start. Even though I woke up bright and early this morning, I still managed to miss my bus to New York City. #fml

I wanted to fit in a quick workout before my trip, so I set my alarm for an early-morning workout at the gym. Rise ‘n’ shine! I forgot how empty the gym is at that hour. I loved it. I might start getting up early to go at this time more often.

At the gym, I ran 3 miles on the treadmill. I warmed up with a jog for the first mile and then did intervals (1 minute sprint + 2 minutes jog) for the second and third miles.

After my workout, I stopped by Marylou’s for an iced coffee. Instead of my usual Almond Joy, I went with a flavor called “Peanut Butter Wonderful.” Now, doesn’t that sound delicious? The name alone made me happy. The flavor sort of reminded me of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, but not as sweet… and mixed with coffee. I ordered mine without sugar, so I think that helped with the sweetness.

At home, I showered up, finished packing, walked Murphy, and then made breakfast. This morning’s eats: toast with sunflower butter and banana slices. It’s a long ride to NYC, so I made sure to load up on the nut butter. It sticks to my ribs and keeps me full for hours.

After breakfast, Mal dropped me off at the train station. He was sad to see me go. (Murphy gave me a similar look when I said goodbye to him at home. The two of them with their pouty lips”¦ jeez.)

The commuter rail experienced some issues and ended up being delayed, so I arrived at South Station about 20 minutes later than expected. My bus to NYC was scheduled to leave at 8:30, so I booked it through the terminal, but still ended up missing it.

I waited around on standby for the 9:30 bus, which was completely sold out. It didn’t seem likely that I’d get on it, but the bus gods were with me, and I got the LAST seat on the bus. Boo.Yah. I still can’t believe it!

For the bus ride, I brought a bunch of snacks: Ginger Snap Larabar, peanut butter-filled pretzels, mixed nuts, and water. I don’t have lunch plans in NYC, so I plan to snack and then grab a cupcake in the city. Rumor has it that Crumbs is the place to go!

See ya from NYC!

Question of the Day

Are you a morning exerciser? If so, what time do you wake up to workout? What’s your favorite thing about morning workouts?

P.S. Want to become a morning exerciser? Check out my Tips for Getting Your Butt Out of Bed!

  1. I love morning workouts simply because I have a satisfied feeling the rest of the day knowing I already got my workout done. When I save it for the night I usually feel a little antsy until it’s done. Morning workouts always help me eat better the rest of the day too!

  2. I love morning workouts, but I’m lucky in that I don’t have to work very early, so I’m only up around 6:30 every day to work out. I don’t know how people do it when they’re up at 4 am to fit a run in!

  3. i like morning work outs but ever since i started working from home the have been scraped. glad you finally got on the bus. enjoy nyc. i am not sure how busy you are but i was just there and really enjoyed two things. the high line which goes from 30th-14th (ish) on 10th ave and is a walk way park on an old train tracks. http://www.thehighline.org/about/maps there is also a food truck and “beer garden” at the northern most point. then the other bar the pony bar on 45th st and 10th has all these great craft beers. oh how i miss nyc. have a great trip!

  4. I am a morning exerciser! I am an intern and a student, so when I have work at 8 am, I wake up around 6:15 am and head to the gym. I usually run 2-6 miles or mix it up by adding strength training. Most of my college friends make fun of me for waking up before noon, but I don’t feel as energized throughout my day if I don’t workout first thing in the morning. Even after a night out partying until 2 am, I still get that workout in!

  5. I am definitely a morning exerciser! I get up anywhere from 5- 5:30 AM since my job keeps me late sometimes. I like it get it out of the way and feel energized all day. As for those cupcakes, you should check out Magnolia if you haven’t already. Or—Baked By Melissa!

  6. I love to workout in the morning becuase then it is O.V.E.R. for the day. I usually get up by 5:30 a.m. to squeeze it in before work.

  7. You should taste test! Crumbs is OK. Billy’s is my favorite NYC cupcake. It’s on 9th Ave between 22nd and 21st. Baked by Melissa Cupcakes are also great, and so teeny tiny so you can try a few flavors!

  8. Sorry you missed your bus, but I’m glad that everything worked out in the end. 🙂

Aside from having to drag myself out of bed, early morning workouts are great! I love not having to battle for cardio equipment or weights. Sometimes I even get the entire aerobic room to myself, if there are no classes going on. Best part, your workout is done and out of the way before anything else can interfere.

Hope the Crumbs cupcake is delicious. I live in Long Island and I still haven’t gotten the chance to have one yet. 🙁 😉

  9. I used to be a consistent morning exerciser and as my running years have added up, I have lost my motivation for morning runs. Does anyone have any good tips?

    1. @Alexandria: I know how it feels to get worn down from running and morning exercise! My advice to get motivated is to plan your morning runs/exercise at the start of each week. Make it a point to write down a workout schedule for each day by stating what type of exercise you will do, the time of day you will do it, and how long you will do it.
This way you will be mentally prepared for what is to come and it will feel that much better when you complete it. Also make it a point to reward yourself when you stick to your schedule. Always enjoy a nice post-workout meal. Once you get used to having a set schedule, you will feel great and energized each day! Hope this helps (:

      1. @Shelby: Thanks Shelby! I always feel so good & can keep up the am running for two days or so. You’re suggestions definitely help & I used to do those things. I just need to stick with it, once it becomes a habit it is so much easier. Thanks for the encouragement. 🙂

  10. I love early morning (5am) workouts because it’s truly me time. I used to hit the gym after work, but find myself being much more consistent in the AM. Took me almost a month to get used to doing that, though.
    Have fun in NYC!

  11. Beware: Crumbs cupcakes are overly sugary. To the point where I feel sick after only a few bites. That said, the peanut butter cup cupcake is bomb. My favorite New York cupcake place is Billy’s. Have fun in NYC!

  12. I like to work out in the mornings, sometimes I just cannot get my butt out of bed though!!! There is something though about being up while everyone is asleep and getting your workout in for the day.

  13. That peanut butter iced coffee sounds heavenly! I do wish there was a place that served flavor coffee like that near me! 🙂

  14. Glad you made the second bus!

I have to say, Crumbs cupcakes are just ok. They are also ENORMOUS (too big unless you have someone to split with).

The best cupcake I’ve ever had was from Magnolia Bakery. There are several locations in the city. If they have the lemon cupcake with the meringue frosting, I highly recommend.

  15. every morning, alarm goes off at 5:30am and I am up. i drive into work (1 hour) and go to the gym right outside of my office, shower/get ready at the gym, and then get to work at 9am. it’s a long morning but it seems to work best for me! i survive on my giant cup of coffee on the car ride in every morning! that peanut butter wonderful sounds awesome! have fun in nyc!

  16. I am a morning exerciser for sure. Since I am on summer break right now I get up at around 8 to fit in my workout. Once school starts again I will have to get up earlier depending on my clinical schedule. I usually get up at 5:30-5:45 on the days I have to be to class by 8. I love starting the day with exercise because it is like starting the day off on the right foot and it is already done once the long work day is over.

  17. i’ve recently been giving morning workouts a go…i have to get up at 5:30am…i love it because i get it out of the way, and i don’t have to dread it all day. but i find that if i’m not in bed before 11pm, there’s no way i can wake up for a morning workout…

  18. I get up around 5:30, but I hate it. All I ever want to do is sleeeeeeep. But once I’m at the gym, I love doing a hard workout and there is hardly anyone there which makes it so much better!

  19. I love my morning workouts. Sure, there are some days I’d rather stay in bed when the alarm goes off at 5, but I think of seeing my friends at the gym and how great I always feel afterwards. I think the key is consistency, getting to bed early and packing literally everything the night before. Plus, I get to commute in my gym clothes and there are always seats on the train:)

  20. I work out in the morning because it is part of my job (my job that I LOVE!). I open a corporate wellness fitness center for Honeywell and teach spin, bootcamp, or bodypump at 5:45 am everyday, BUT when I have an early flight or change of hours, I LOVE running on the quiet, still a little dark streets at 5:00amish….It is SOOO incredibly peaceful!!!

  21. I have to work out in the morning, otherwise I find too many excuses to do it. Plus, it gets me energized for the day.

I set my cell phone alarm and keep it away from my bed so I have to get up to turn it off.

  22. I am definitely an AM exerciser! I get up around 4:45 every day to hit up either a Kick Boxing or resistance class at my local fitness studio. If I skip an AM workout, I will find some excuse not to work out after work…like happy hour…. 🙂
