Reverse Surprise

Hello, hello!

Yesterday was such a great day. It started out like a usual Saturday and ended with quite a nice surprise!

My morning started with breakfast, which was a French Toast Breakfast Scramble topped with Coconut Cinnamon Pears and Teddie peanut butter.

And then I did a little meal planning while I drank my iced coffee.

041 (750x563)

After breakfast, I headed to CrossFit for a workout that involved a bunch of rope climbs, so I made sure to dress properly for it”¦

045 (563x750)

Instead of wrapping my leg in tape mid-WOD to protect my shin like a total goober. Obviously, the tape didn’t work, and I ended up with huge-ass rope burn. Lesson learned. I won’t forget socks again!

Anyway, I did 9 (!!!) rope climbs during the WOD, which is a huge PR for me. I think my previous max was 3 rope climbs the last time we did them. Booyah! Although, I have to admit, I’m kind of bummed that I wussed-out on the 10th and final rope climb of the workout. I got scared my arms were too tired and I might fall. I actually think I probably could have done it, but I was pooped (after 50 Burpees, 100 sit-ups, and 50 push-ups), so coordinating my body to use my legs instead of my arms just wasn’t happening. I guess I was just kind of a mess, so I called it quits. Man, I hate being a quitter, especially because of fear (remember my break-up letter? I guess I need to re-read it), but I did NINE rope climbs, so I’ll celebrate that!

After CrossFit, I drank a protein shake made with Pro Performance AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 in Cookies & Cream flavor mixed with almond milk, iced coffee, and water.

048 (563x750)

While I was drinking my protein shake, I decided that I needed to buy some self-tanner. I was sick of seeing my pasty arms and legs and my friend Kerrie raved about St.Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse to me the other day, so I got in my car, drove to the mall, and bought some. (FYI: It was so easy to apply and it worked awesome! No streaks at all!)

St. Tropez

While I was out, I stopped by a local bakery to buy some cookies for a friend for his birthday. While I was there, I also bought a mint chocolate cupcake for myself. Deeeelicious!

A few hours later, Dave and his dogs, Bella and Grady, arrived. Murphy was pumped to see his long, lost doggie friends!

A little while later, Mal, Dave, and I met up with Kerrie for dinner at El Sarape, which I had heard great things about, so I was really excited to dine there.

061 (750x563)

El Sarape did not disappoint! The food and service was excellent!

We started with chips, salsa, and guacamole.

064 (750x563)

Kerrie and I shared a carafe of sangria, which was amazing! It had a sweet nutmeg/cinnamon-y flavor.

066 (563x750)

For my entrée, I ordered the tacos caseros, which were filled with beef, pork, cheese, jalapenos, and bacon. They were so good! Sadly, my photo doesn’t do them justice!

068 (750x563)

After dinner, we headed to a surprise birthday party for one of our friends. It was his 30th birthday, so his girlfriend planned a big celebration at a local bar.

073 (750x563)

Mal and I arrived just as the birthday boy walked in the door. SURPRISE!

072 (750x563)

About an hour into the celebration, the music stopped playing and the birthday boy said a few words. He thanked everyone for coming and then said he had a surprise for us. Then, he got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend (who planned the party)!!! Reverse surprise! It was so sweet, and I’m so glad he included all of his in their special moment. I’m so happy for them!

074 (750x563)

CrossFit ladies!

076 (750x563)

077 (750x563)

080 (750x563)

Oh, yea, and shots happened last night.

078 (750x563)

I need to get my life together.

079 (750x563)

As always, it was a fabulous time with the CrossFit 781 family!

Question of the Day

Has anyone ever thrown a surprise party for you? Were you surprised or did you know something was up? Have you ever thrown a surprise party for someone else?

Mal threw me a surprise party for my 30th birthday. I knew something was up because we took a French cooking class together, and Mal made us leave early (to get to my party)!

  1. Sounds like a great day indeed! And no worries about the shots”¦it happens! And life is too short not to throw a few back every now and then. 🙂

  2. I have that same protein powder in chocolate and I really like it…I want to try the cookies and cream now!Great job on your rope climbs, those intimidate me. And that party looks like it was a blast! Two awesome surprises!!

  3. Awww what a great day! That is actually the sweetest surprise ever. So sneaky!!!
And I think I might even try protein powder if it was cookies and cream flavored. Maybe… especially if it was washed down with a cupcake.

  4. I’ve always wanted to have a surprise party but haven’t had one yet. It’d be cool to have one for my 18th in a couple of months.
I love how he had a surprise party but then surprised his girlfriend! That’s just so cool!
Everyone keeps eating mexican food and now I CAN’T stop craving it.
I may need to look into that self tanner…hmm

  5. Wow…sounds like an exciting Saturday!! When my husband proposed,he invited our closest friends and family. I thought we were just meeting his parents for dinner at our favorite winery but when I got there, everyone was already there. It was very memorable and so special to share it with my favorite people.

  6. This just gave me chills! What a sweet proposal 🙂 Those shots look awesome, no shame. You had an intense workout earlier so it’s like they didn’t even happen.

  7. Woohoo on the rope climbs! Don’t worry, next time you’ll probably bust out 15 like its NBD. 😉

It appears that you had a very productive Saturday from meal planning, crossfit, visitors, friends, and even ending with a fun shot (or shots). Hopefully the alcohol went down smooth and you don’t have any flare ups. 🙂

  8. Not a surprise party, but I did a surprise trip for DH a couple of years back. All he knew was to take the time off. And then friends helped me throw him off track. He thought we were going to Charleston. But really it was a 100% planned trip to Disney! I surprised him the night before with some Disney guide books, the tickets, etc. He was SO SURPRISED.

    The Kidless Kronicles

  9. My when my friend was engaged, her now husband threw a surprise serenade for her (South Philly has a tradition of the groom serenading the bride a few weeks before the wedding. It turns into a big block party for all the neighbors). She was totally shocked, and that never happens. So much fun!

  10. Funny you asked about surprise parties because my husband threw one for me last night for my 35th birthday! I thought I was having dinner and drinks with some of my girlfriends, but when I showed up, all of our family and friends were there to surprise me. It was awesome and he gets husband of the year for pulling it off!

  11. No one has ever thrown me a surprise birthday – had my 30th a couple of weeks ago, but no party of any kind happened. *waaa waaaa sad police*

I’ve planned a few myself – they are fun to plan! One was for my hubby’s bday – he knew there was a party, but no idea who was going to be there, or where it was going to be. I blind folded him and purposely took the wrong route to our fave pub haha!

  12. Ohmigosh, a few years ago I threw a surprise going away party for a friend who was moving to San Francisco to go to grad school. I invited *everyone* – friends, family, former co-workers – I mean, everyone. It was scheduled for a Saturday afternoon.
The night before the party, we got together to have drinks, just the two of us. We ended up getting suuuuuuuuper drunkface (the beer punch at Cambridge Common near Harvard Sq in delicious, but deadly. And we had 2 pitchers of it…), and while walking home my friend tripped over something and landed directly on her face. She had a scrape on her cheekbone, but wasn’t hurt too badly.
The next day, the “cover” for the surprise party is that we were going to go get mani/pedis at some place on Beacon St, but then my husband would call saying he forgot his credit card at a nearby bar, and could I go pick it up for him on my way out? Everyone was waiting for us at the bar for the big surprise.
Well, my friend showed up that morning really, really, REALLY hungover. She hadn’t even showered since falling the night before. She was a disaster, but I didn’t know how to tell her to clean up without completely ruining the surprise. So, off we went.
We walked into the dark bar, and everyone (there were at least 25-30 people there) leaped out and did a great big huge “SURPRISE!!!!!” – my friend was still so out of it and disoriented her first thought (as she later told me) was that we had walked into someone else’s surprise party and ruined it, and so she turned around and tried to slink back out the door – she didn’t even notice under I turned her back around and said “No, this is for YOU!” that it was all of her friends and family there.
It ended up being a totally fabulous party, and luckily my friend is so easygoing that she didn’t card (too much) that she was crazy hungover in front of everyone important to her. It certainly made for a memorable occasion!

  13. You would not be saying you need to get your life together if you had followed me around last night. Talk about someone who needs to get it together: me. I’ve thrown surprise parties for friends, but somehow they’ve always found out about it! Bummer. No one’s ever thrown me a surprise party, but my mom did have a surprise for me at my high school graduation party. She had included a cloth square in each of the invitations to the party and asked all attendees to create a design on their square that either consisted of well wishes, marine life (I was leaving to get my degree in marine biology), or something that would remind me of Chicago. All of these attendees brought in their beautiful squares and my mom made a quilt for me out of them so that I would always be reminded of home! That was so nice, especially since I went to college 15 hours away

  14. That is so cute! I love surprises but I’m usually finding out about them on accident. Your shirt/dress(?) at the party is very cute!

  15. That is so cute! I love surprises but I’m usually finding out about them on accident. Your shirt/dress(?) at the party is very cute!

  16. I thought I was setting up at my sister’s for her surprise birthday party…I was surprised when everyone was at her place to surprise me with my baby shower.

  17. I love that self tanner-so easy to apply with the mitt and comes out great everything! My friends always compliment me when I wear it!

  18. I agree with Alyssa above on the self tanner review. I’ve heard a lot of great things about St Tropez but never could bring myself to buy it

  19. Was this the Dave from Dave and Marie way back when that had the 2 cute little dogs?? Maybe I have that wrong? Hope so.

  20. When I was 16, my boyfriend planned a surprise party for me at our local rock climbing gym. It was the best and only surprise party I’ve ever had! I always hint to my husband to do something like that for me (I love surprises), but he’s not the most social and having just moved (yet again) with the military we don’t have many friends yet in our new town!

  21. You don’t need self-tanner with those amazing arms! I hate my arms—yours are such inspiraton!
PS I love your blog 🙂

  22. What a great surprise and memory for them both! We have a surprise 40th to attend in a few weeks, looking forward to it!

  23. That cupcake….the shots….they all look so good! 🙂
I LOVE throwing surprise parties. But my family knows I will disown them if they throw me one. I only like being the center of attention if it is MY choice!

  24. I planned a mini surprise ‘party’ for my boyfriend last summer. His birthday is July 25th, so he always jokes that it is like Christmas in July. Last summer we were in Myrtle Beach on vacation with two other couples over his birthday, so while he was out with the guys golfing that day, us girls decorated our beach house with a mini Christmas tree and stockings. He was quite surprised when he came back to see a mini tree in the living room with birthday (wrapped in holiday paper) presents under it. 🙂

  25. One of my best friends, Jamie, LOVES El Sarape! She took me there once for dinner and it was definitely worth the drive to the South Shore from the North Shore.

No one has ever planned a surprise birthday party for me but I did put together a surprise bridal shower for Jamie two years ago along with the other bridesmaids. I’m pretty sure she had an idea of when it was but had no idea about all of the details. I had so much fun planning it, from hand making the invitations to putting together the decorations.

  26. I’m guessing the birthday boy knew something was up if he had the ring on him to propose. Thats pretty awesome though! My friends threw me a surprise party when I was in middle school so it was just a small thing but I definitely had no idea. I hope to throw a surprise party for my mom for her 55th or 60th. I love surprises and surprising people, I think it really shows you care when you put that much effort into planning something and keeping someone you love in the dark.
