Pug On Lap Rule & Green Envy Workout

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

It was a gorgeous day in downtown Boston yesterday! It was a little chilly, but beautiful and sunny at the same time.

My doctor’s appointment went well. It was short and sweet like I expected. My doctor wants to wean me off the Uceris over the next few weeks, which, truthfully, I am really worried about. I have had ZERO success weaning off steroids in the past, so I’m really trusting my doctor and hoping for the best.

It was just about lunchtime when I got out of my appointment, so I headed to Whole Foods for lunch. The Charles River Plaza location is one of my favorite Whole Foods because their salad and hot bars are incredible. There are sooooo many options! I had a blast picking and choosing a little bit of everything for lunch. (Of course, I had to get a piece of Whole Foods bacon. Obsessed.)

After lunch, I headed over to Starbucks to meet Chad and Lindsay!

It was so nice meeting them, and we had all sorts of things to talk about. As you probably remember, Chad has had a challenging journey to health, but he’s improving every day. His doctors even think he’ll be home by Thanksgiving!

After spending some time with Chad and Lindsay, I headed home. It was almost time for CrossFit, so I changed into my gear and then made a quick snack of spaghetti squash mixed with white cheddar cheese from The Laughing Cow. Yum!

Yesterday’s WOD was a lot of fun. We basically went all out on 3 different exercises (Kettlebell swings, Burpees, and Sumo Deadlift High Pulls) for short 30-second bursts with 20 seconds of rest in between. After we completed each exercise, we recorded how many reps we did and then repeated this for 5 rounds. The goal was to keep up the intensity and do the same number of reps as the workout progressed and your body got more and more tired. It was definitely a challenge!

Mal was right next to me during this WOD, so I tried to keep up with him. He was a little faster than me on the Kettlebell swings and Sumo Deadlift High Pulls, but he pretty much smoked me on the Burpees (he consistently completed 12-13 reps in 30 seconds!), but, in the end, he only beat by 14 reps on this workout. He got 215; I got 201. I’ll take it.

After CrossFit, I came home, showered, and threw together a quick dinner. The spaghetti squash was already cooked and the meatballs were from Whole Foods, so all I had to do was add some marinara sauce, grated Parmesan and dinner was done!

A couple of hours later, I started to get hungry again, but Murphy was asleep on my lap, and I didn’t want to upset him, which is actually a “rule” in our house. If one of us has the pug laying on our lap, the other person has to do whatever is asked of them because we don’t want to disturb Murphy. (I had this rule growing up too, but it was all about “not upsetting the cats.”)

With Murphy on my lap, I couldn’t get up to get myself a snack, so I asked Mal to grab me a yogurt with a little bit of trail mix in it. As soon as he handed it to me, Murphy made sure he was nice and close to the food action.

Question of the Day

Do you have a “don’t upset the pet rule” in your house or are we just living in Murphy’s world?

P.S. Back on My Feet launched its 11th chapter in Los Angeles last week!

  1. Murphy is so cute! Our only pet rule is that Bentley, the goldendoodle, must get his morning snuggles before you get out of bed! He hears the alarm go off and starts nudging and wiggling himself right up onto the pillow to make sure he gets enough attention before you leave for the day. He’s about 75 pounds so we shouldn’t have the lap issue, but sometimes I think he thinks hes a tiny dog and hops right into your lap.

  2. Haha that’s too funny! I actually believe it’s an unwritten rule 😉 When the kitten is asleep on me, I do everything I can not to disturb him. I get a little upset when I have to get up because the husband isn’t home, though, lol. So ridiculous but I love it. Glad to hear you are feeling better! Sending luck to get off the steroids! I was on them for my Colitis a few years ago, and I was able to wean off of them and be ok, so here’s hoping you can, too 🙂

  3. If we had Wholefoods in Ireland I would be seriously broke!!! The mismash boxes of yumminess always look so amazing! Love the workout, totally pinning it! Any recommendations on weight for swings and high pulls?

  4. Good luck with the weaning process this time! I hope it goes well for you.
I used to have “rules” for my puppy, but she’s just too cute those quickly flew out the window. Oops.

  5. Hang in there as your Drs work to find the right balance. I know this is absolutely frustrating (plus can be expensive and time-consuming as well). Fingers crossed the weaning process goes well for you.

I seriously, seriously want a whole foods close by! Or a Trader Joes! I’d take either and there’s a large and lovely abandoned building soooo close to my house which would be perfect. The nearest TJs and WF are 2 1/2 hours away which means I go maybe once a year. For the other 364 days, I just drool over the blog postings online. 🙂

  6. We are so pathetic that Molly, our dog, was sleeping on my husband’s side of the bed Monday night on his pillows. Dan didn’t want to bother her so he slept in her spot. We have a King and she usually gets the middle, this time he was stuck in the middle.Only dog owners understand….

  7. haha, we fight over that rule all the time! I’m a mother to human children, and after I had them, my views of the pets rankings in the house kinda dropped. Still love them, but they aren’t in charge 😉 Geoff, however, is a cat person through and through, his 4 cats are his BABIES. They rule the house. It makes my eyes roll and I’m constantly saying “they are JUST CATS!”…except for when a cat is on my lap, then I sucker him into doing whatever I want, lol.

  8. I’m glad your appointment went well…I hope the weaning goes smoothly too.

I totally understand this rule…it was especially important when Molly was a puppy and she would finally settle down. She loves to play and loves attention, so when she is sleeping or relaxing, don’t you dare disturb her. 🙂

  9. When our kiddos were babies, we had a don’t upset the baby rule… they LOVED to nap in our arms. And he is your baby, so it totally works 🙂

  10. I was literally eating a piece of whole foods bacon as I read how much you love their bacon. Ha! It is truly delicious!

  11. I work a few streets over from that Whole Foods and it’s a HUGE challenge not to buy lunch there every day! Their salad and hot bars really are amazing. I try to limit to once a week and pack lunch the rest of the time, but some weeks are more successful than others. 😉

  12. So pleased to see Chad looking so well! Really made my day 🙂
Keeping everything crossed for a smooth journey coming off the steroids.
Oh and that WOD looks like fun! Would love it if I turned up at my box to that workout (maybe the burpees being switched to something else! He he!).

  13. Oh, one must never disturb a snuggling kitty. This behavior must be encouraged, so you have to wait until the cat in question leaves of her own volition. Unfortunately, there’s only one of me, so I’m stuck until she’s ready to get up!

  14. I still cannot find the white cheddar laughing cow!! I’ve looked at walmart, price chopper, shaws… no luck. Guess I have to schlep to Stop n Shop.

  15. Once Hawkeye finds his spot in bed, he can’t be moved. He does this meak growl if you try to move him. And good luck shoving him and hopping in that spot as fast as you can, he always wins…

  16. It’s not a rule, but I definitely always feel a little bad moving if my dog’s head is on my lap or arm. Especially when we’re in bed sleeping – which makes for some sleepless nights for me, but the dog is always well-rested!

  17. I have a ‘don’t disturb Bo’ rule when we are sleeping in the bed. He always always always sleeps in between my legs, no matter how I am situated. I try and move my legs as little as possible so I don’t disturb him.
IDK why, because he gets to sleep all day anyways!

  18. It depends if I have to pee the cat’s getting disturbed 😉 my GI used to be MGH at Charles River Plaza and I normally had a noon apt so I always hit the whole foods salad bar. now my docs at Brigham’s and there salad bars not too shabby but I do miss cruising and the whole foods aisles and wishing I could afford to buy a lot of stuff there!

  19. We absolutely have that rule in our house. If Carter is nice and snuggled in a position on the blanket, we cannot move the blanket or go to the bathroom because he’ll jump up haha

  20. I’m so glad that Chad is doing so well! It would be awesome if he’d be able to be home with his family for Thanksgiving!

  21. I’m glad I’m not the only one to grow up with this rule! Sadly, my husband didn’t. He’s really very helpful and will get me things, but if he’s tired and the only reason I don’t want to get up is so I don’t disturb the dog, I get the canned, “She’s just a dog” reply and have to do it myself.

  22. HAHA my dog is not very “cuddly” so if we get him to lay still on our lap we completely savor it. I’ve gone hours without a drink or bathroom break just to avoid losing the cuddle time with the dog.

  23. I really want spaghetti squash and meatballs now. That looks so good! My husband has no problem kicking the cat off his lap, but I hate doing it cause she’s so happy when she gets to snuggle. Luckily, I get to use the cat as an excuse to not get things from the kitchen my self!

  24. Random question – I’m new to the spaghetti squash thing and after reading your blog decided to try it out. Our local grocery store, Publix, had one last night and I bought it – $6! Are they normally that much?

  25. Good luck with the weaning process!

We have kind of an opposite rule. Our (my) dog is a 35 lb. ball of energy. All the time she is ready to go. All. The. Time. So in the evenings when we are winding down watching some TV (and the dog is finally laying down in her bed), we have an unspoken rule that we will not whistle, make any loud noises or do anything out of the norm so that she does not get all rambunctious. So its not really a matter of not moving so that we don’t disturb her for her satisfaction…more to not disturb her for our satisfaction.
