“If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.”
Wise, wise words with regard to running (and life, in general) from Steve Prefontaine. Actually, he has a lot of great running quotes. Here are a few of my favorites:
“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”
“You cannot propel yourself forward by patting yourself on the back.”
“Success isn’t how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started.”
As you can see, I’m trying to psyched myself up for tomorrow’s 18-mile run, which is the farthest distance I’ve ever attempted to run. I’ve walked a marathon and run 16-miles, but 18 is unchartered territory for me. And with my recent sickness, lack of motivation, and IT band trouble, I can only imagine how challenging it will be for me, so I’m doing everything in my power to prepare myself for tomorrow.
I started by reading a few running blogs and motivational quotes online (as seen above). Then, I laid out all of my running gear, which includes sneakers, gloves, Garmin 305, sports bras, a drywick t-shirt, light-weight jacket (it’s going to be in the mid-30’s tomorrow, so I’m keeping the “25 Degree Rule” in mind), running pants, drywick socks, headband, 3 packages of Gu (Lemon Sublime & Chocolate), Spibelt, chapstick, iPhone, and headphones.
This sounds like a crazy amount of stuff, doesn’t it? But, I can’t imagine running 18 miles without all of it.
Dinner
Does my pizza crust look strange to you?! Well, it should! It’s Boboli’s new football-shaped crust! 😀 Ok, I’m sort of a dork, but when I was asked to sample it, I jumped at the chance. I love fun stuff like football pizzas! 😉
I topped the pizza with shredded cheddar, marinara sauce, and Summer Sausage from Hickory Farms.
I love you, melty cheese.
On the side, I had an arugula salad topped with crumbled feta and Asian Ginger Plum Dressing.
For dessert, I broke into the Apple Crisp that I baked this afternoon. I’m so glad that I waited to eat it! 😀
In addition to perusing the internet and laying out all of my gear for tomorrow, I’m drinking lots of water and heading to bed early. I definitely need my rest for tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Good luck, Tina! You can do it. Just put one foot in front of the other, again and again
I love Prefontaine! Especially that movie about him, Without Limits.

Good Luck tomorrow! I remember my first 18-miler and the anticipation is definitely worse than the run itself!
You are so prepared – you will do great tomorrow!
Have confidence; you’re golden.

Good luck on your run tomorrow, I love those motivational quotes…. we always put a quote up for my vball team and I’m always looking for new ones 🙂
Good luck with your run. The fact that you are prepared puts you ahead of the game.
Good luck, Tina! Looks like you’re ready to tackle it. I know you can do it!!
Good luck! 🙂
Good luck on your run tomorrow, Tina! If I can run 18 miles, anyone can. Believe me. I agree with Keri, the anticipation is the hardest part.
Good luck with your 18 miles!!
If anyone can do it, you can!
I carry all that plus a Camelbak Charm hydration pack. It is truly a small scale military operation! Good luck–I always tell myself the time will pass at just the same speed as if i was sitting on the couch reading a book. 3 hours passes the same, on the couch or on the road. Good luck.
YOU CAN DO IT! I am not a runner, and I ran a marathon last weekend – the furtherest I’d run was a 1/2, and i had only trained for 5 wks … no injuries… you are fit and strong and prepared. Ace it!
You’re definitely prepared. I’m sure you’ll do fine.
Good luck with your run! Can’t wait to read about it after you conquer the distance 🙂
ha – football shaped crust!!!
good luck tomorrow!
Good luck tomorrow on your 18-miler. I’m running my first marathon tomorrow in Memphis, TN (St. Jude’s)! It will be a day of firsts for us both.
Good luck! I know you’ll kill that run! 🙂
I think you should take care of your IT-band instead! Worried about ya. :/
you can do it!
Good luck tomorrow! Football shaped pizza=super fun!
You’re going to do great! Good luck.
And your pizza always looks so good!
good luck! good luck! good luck! you’ve got this! you’ve trained for it!
It’s not 18, just 3 6milers:) I hope your IT band behaves tomorrow.
Thanks for the quotes! Just in time for me as I’ve been having a bit of anxiety about training for the half that I’m doing in February.
Good luck!!!
Pre is amazing!!! Your quotes make me want to watch Without Limits.
Him and Bowerman both have amazing quotes! My favorite Pre quote is, “when you set the pace you control the race.”
To me this means that you can control your destiny, and reminds me that anything is possible if you push yourself. Don’t let the world around you throw you off your path to your dreams. 🙂
Good luck on your run tomorrow! You will do awesome!
You’re going to dominate this run, Tina. You look prepared! Isn’t it amazing how much little stuff it takes to prep for a long run? Wowzas!
You’re going to rock tomorrow! It’s just 3 6-mile runs…or 2 9-mile runs! It’s very true–the anticipation is far worse than the run!
Tina,
This has nothing to do with your post, and I’m sorry but I came across these leather goods in an ETSY shop and immediately thought of you (and Murphy!)

hi tina.
thanks soooooooooooooo much for the recent recipe you posted about the greens, walnuts, and garlic that you ate with tortellini.
You were my inspiration to come up with Spinach LInguine with walnuts and it turned out delish with some parmesan cheese. i also used 2 tbsp of EVOO and it was just right.

Sometimes certain foods really do taste better when you wait for them. I’m hopeless at that kind of patience, though! I’m a dessert-after-every-meal kinda girl myself 😉
Good luck girl! Take it slow and steady 🙂

Good luck!!! You’ll rock those 18! 🙂
I used to be so amazed with how much stuff I had to take out on my long runs! Good luck on your run 🙂
ROCK IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🙂
I repeated “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift” over and over in my head while I ran the Boston Marathon and “Don’t Think, Just run” while I ran Milwaukee’s Lakefront. I think it totally works and keeps your mind from going to “bad places.” Good luck on your run- I know you can do it!
