I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

I don’t even know where to begin with how much I love Practical Paleo. I’ve read through it twice now and I open it daily to reference something or make one of the recipes from it. It’s pretty much everything you’ll ever need for starting out with Paleo and a whole-foods lifestyle.


The first part of the book covers what Paleo is all about and why some of what we’ve been taught about good nutrition is wrong. It includes lots of information about the digestive system (i.e. leaky gut, gluten, anti-nutrients) as well as 120 delicious Paleo recipes and tear-out guides for easy access. It also provides a bunch of 30-day meal plans designed specifically to support a number of conditions, including:

  • immune health (autoimmune conditions)
  • blood sugar regulation (diabetes 1 & 2, hypoglycemia)
  • digestive health (leaky gut, IBS & IBD)
  • multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue
  • heart health (cholesterol & blood pressure)
  • neurological health (Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s)
  • cancer recovery
  • fat loss
  • athletic performance


Each section offers specific diet and lifestyle recommendations as well as nutritional supplements and herbs to consider. It’s really interesting and definitely something to consider.

  1. I actually like eating whole grain pasta then I do white pasta. If you cook whole grain pasta a little longer then it says to (like 15 minutes longer) then it gets as soft as white pasta and is very delicious. I am not talking about wheat pasta because it is nasty imo. It takes so long to cook and is tough. But if you make sure to get a premium brand that says whole grain on the front you are getting a healthy type of pasta that is maybe 50 cents more a box. Thats nothing to throw in to get something more healthier. So if you like white pasta, try the whole grain pasta out. I personally like the sea shell pasta myself. Its just as soft as white pasta and tastes great. I use to only eat white pasta myself up until a few years ago. I was very stubborn and said I would never get anything else. If I can make the change anyone can. Taste is whats most important to me sometimes too. I have made the same decision about brown rice

  2. Practical Paleo is essentially three different books in one, with some bonuses at the end. Part 1, is the The Why. It covers the basics as to what is paleo, why certain foods aren’t really healthy (despite Dr. Oz saying they are), your digestive system and blood sugar regulation. And as a former beauty queen, you better believe that my favorite section was “The Poop Pageant”. You heard me, a pageant for poop, complete with Ms. Ideal poop being crowned the poop winner. This section is just over 100 pages and is a real easy read. It is filled with pictures and diagrams to help the reader fully understand the concepts. There are also some fabulous guides that can be used everyday such as guides to: food quallity, gluten, digestion and, of course, poop. It ends with a FAQ section which I personally found very useful.

  3. Thanks for a little insight into this book!! I have been looking for one with good explanations and starter recipes, but strangely enough my facebook friends who are constantly posting their paleo meals/ WOD’s couldn’t really explain WHY good foods were good and why others are not. Buying it tonight!!

  5. I would LOOOOVE this book. I feel off the paleo bandwagon because of time and felt it was inconvenient. .. I need a jumpstart and this book would for sure give that to me!

  6. I would love to have this book. My only Paleo cook book is Well Fed which I love but I need some more ideas and Practical Paleo looks really good!

  7. I would LOVE to win this book. 20 days after starting my first Whole30, I no longer needed a cane to walk with! The inflamation in my knees was gone. I now eat paleo all the time and try to keep to a mostly Whole30 diet. I would really like to try the Autoimmune protocol in Diane Sanfillipo’s Practical Paleo book!
