Not Like Riding a Bike

Hi, guys!

We were up and at ’em on Monday morning. I woke up at 4:45 to bang out some work before the boys woke up, butttttt… Quinn woke up a short while later, so I didn’t get all that much accomplished. Whomp whomp. He was exhausted, but didn’t want to stay in bed any longer, so I let him wake up with a show while I answered a few more emails. We made it work! 🙂

A little while later, we were both hungry for breakfast, so I made him a smoothie while I nuked some cauliflower gnocchi in the microwave and added sautéed spinach and a wedge of Laughing Cow Swiss to it. Mmm! I also added some collagen to my (second) iced coffee of the day.

The morning started to get away from us a little bit, and I really wanted to run before it got too hot and humid outside, so I woke up Mal and then headed out for 5.5 miles.

I was proud of myself for running 5.5 miles without stopping to walk, but, man, it felt terrible. Blah. Getting back into running is NOT just like riding a bike. It does not come back easily – and you know what they say: If you don’t use it, you lose it! But, on a positive note, running that far was definitely progress for me.

Prior to yesterday, I was only running 2.5 – 4 miles at a time, so 5.5 was a big success. It actually made me excited to increase my distance even more in the coming weeks. I’m running the Falmouth Road Race next month, which is 7 miles, and I’d like to run a fall 10K, so I want to keep at it and get faster at this distance. Progress everyday, right?

After my run, I refueled with two rice cakes with cashew butter and banana slices (and more iced coffee with vanilla Ripple and collagen). There’s only one rice cake pictured because it was SO GOOD, I just had to go back for another one!

The rest of the afternoon involved lunch, work, and nap time for Quinn. When he woke up, we took Murphy for a ride in the car to the park. HE WAS PUMPED!!

I grabbed a Spindrift for the road – still loving this seltzer!

We brought Quinn’s scooter and his stroller because he wanted Murphy to ride in it. Haha!

This dog is ridiculous. For the record, he did not ride in the stroller and happily walked all 1.5 miles with us! 🙂

Cheese!!!

Question of the Day

Besides running, what other things are not just like riding a bike?

I also came up with math – like long division and fractions. It would definitely take me a little white (and maybe some Googling) to remember how to do them. Ha!

  1. Running is soooooo NOT like riding a bike! I did 6 long races (4 halves, a 10 and 12 miler) in a year, and was running 20+ miles a week for 1.5 years to stay in shape for them. I burnt out so badly afterward, it’s now been almost a year and I haven’t run more than 3 miles, and that’s maybe once every few weeks! I think I’ll want to start up again in fall, it just for enjoyment rather than races. 5.5 is progress! I know you’ve run multiple marathons… it’s so crazy how fast it goes away.

  2. I agree with you 100% on running (and math lol). Once I got out of the Army, I stopped running outside of CF WODs. I thought working out 4-5 times a week meant I was still in shape to run 30+ minutes at a time. Big. Old. Nope. The good news is that riding a bike is…well, like riding a bike! I bought a new road bike last spring and have been just fine on it after years of not riding!

  3. Hi, Tina!

Great job getting back to running. I’m currently doing the same, and I’m on the struggle bus, too! Ha! Do you think you’ll be doing any workout recaps as you’re incorporating more running? I really liked when you used to post your weekly workouts! Gave me some good motivation & inspiration.

    1. I think you were the only person who liked those posts! Haha! But I’ll try to include more workouts in my posting! I’m mostly doing 2-3 CF days and 1-2 runs with 2-4 rest days.

  4. I totally agree about running. Aside from being pregnant, if I don’t use it I definitely lose it. And it’s SO hard to push through those first few runs to get it back!

  5. Playing a musical instrument- definitely not like riding a bike. I used to be great at playing piano. I sat down to play a few weeks ago, thinking it would all just mysteriously come back to me, but nope! Fumbled over every other note haha. Oh well!

  6. Haha! Murphy would be in good company here in Southern California. I see people with dog strollers ALL. THE. TIME. I still can’t believe it’s a thing!!
For me, getting up early….oof. It is NOT like riding a bike. I can’t believe I used to get up at 4:30am every day to get to the gym before work. That was pre-kids…I want to die if I see a “4” on the clock when I wake up now!

  7. I have heard that pull-ups are not just like riding a bike. I try to do a few every week as I am no longer doing them in high volume in CF WODs.
