No Phone Zone

Good morning!

I woke up craving iced coffee in a bad way this morning, but, honestly, when don’t I? Godiva Caramel Pecan Bar iced coffee + soy milk = heaven.

To eat, I made a big bowl of oatmeal. We desperately need to go grocery shopping, so there were slim pickings for breakfast this morning.

In the mix: oats, ground flaxseed meal, chia seeds, cinnamon, dried cranberries, and peanut butter.

Last Night’s Dinner

As I already mentioned, we have practically no food in our house right now, so last night’s dinner was reminiscent of Monday’s meal. We had Annie’s Mac & Cheese mixed with roasted cauliflower and garlic chicken sausage. It was nothing special, but it did the trick.

Question of the Day

At night, when Mal and I get into bed, we tend to sit and read for 20-30 minutes (or until one of us gets tired). Last night, he grabbed a magazine to read, and I picked up my iPhone to check my email, which is highly illegal in bed. Mal called me out on my iPhone usage, and I immediately put it away.

You see, a long time ago, Mal and I made a no electronics in bed rule (i.e. iPhones, laptops, TVs, etc.), and we’ve stuck to it ever since. Basically, our thinking is: no electronics = a relaxing bedroom = better sleep (and couple time).

What are your thoughts on electronics in the bedroom? Yay or nay?

  1. I really give you guys kudos for that!! I think it’s a great idea to be healthy all around, especially if a couple wants to have a healthy and wholesome relationship with one another–not to mention, better communication. 😀

  2. We also have the no electronics in the bedroom rule. We haven’t had cable in years, but when we did have it the cable guy couldn’t believe we didn’t want it installed in our bedroom.

    I think it helps us sleep better and have higher quality one-on-one time.

  3. Oooohhh! I would not let my husband see that. We have a little problem because I am a total night owl. I get really hyper starting at about 10:30 PM. Just when he’s ready to go to bed. I think electronics might help our relationship because they help me bother him less when he’s trying to fall asleep. But your post made me kind of wish for that… lol. It sounds really nice.

  4. I can’t resist getting my iPhone out before bed to play a few games of Sudoku. It’s the best! But I don’t use it to check email, so I agree with the no electronics for purposes besides Sudoku. 😉

  5. I’m with you! No electronics in bed. I think it’s so helpful to take time to disconnect before you fall asleep. It’s HARD to not check my phone when I can’t sleep but we try to observe the same rule. Easier for him than for me 🙂

  6. I am so guilty of having electronics in our bed at night. Actually it’s even worse in that we have the TV on too, so I’m in bed catching up on blog reading with my BlackBerry and hubby is watching the TV, yikes! We know it’s bad but we still do it…I think we need to switch to just book/magazine reading, and thus, more couple time 🙂

The only time we really bring electronics in is if we’re having what we call a “bed day.” Bed day simply consists of cuddling in bed while watching a movie on a laptop (no TV in our bedroom), or planning a trip, wedding planning, etc. Something that requires a laptop to do, but is also something fun. It’s one of my favorite ways to relax on a lazy Sunday.

  8. I use my phone some at night just because I can’t stand to sit there in the dark. Most of the time, Michael’s playing games with his friends since I have to get to bed so early for early morning runs..but we don’t use phones or anything whenever we are going to bed together.

  9. we agreed, no tv in the bedroom…but we are both guilty of iphone-ing in bed…big time. maybe we should think about going your route of no electronics in bed! great idea!

  10. My husband always checks his phone in bed and it drives me crazy, mostly because the light makes it hard for me to sleep. He’s always saying that I can’t possibly see it with my eyes closed, but I can!

    We don’t have a tv in our room either.

  11. I’m an early morning 4:00 riser and he’s a stay up as late as possible night person So we go to bed together and when I fall asleep he watches TV. This solution works for us 🙂

  12. We implemented the no technology rule for the first 3 years of marriage and then caved and bought a TV for our bedroom!! I must say I do enjoy falling asleep to the TV or watching the news as I get ready for work in the AM. We are really good about other technology though!

  13. We are all about electronics in the bedroom! We love our TV, and our laptops, so of course we allow them both in there. It doesn’t mean we use them much in there, but they are welcome if we need them. 🙂

  14. For the last 10 years my husband has forbid a tv in our room. I personally LOVE falling asleep to the tv. I know it’s not great for the “couple time” but I have secretly wanted a tv for a looong time. Well, unfortunately, we are not going to make it as a couple much longer 🙁 But, maybe now I can score a tv for my bedroom. Hey, silver lining right?
