I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.


An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

After dining at the Melting Pot this evening, I was thoroughly pissed-off. When it comes to food, I’m usually easy to please, but, tonight, I experienced the worst service I’ve ever received at a restaurant.

Thankfully, Mal and I had wonderful dinner dates (my sister and her husband) to laugh about the situation with! It got that bad!

After spending A LOT of money on a sub-par meal, I was ready to write a terrible review about my experience at the Melting Pot on my blog. I rarely ever write a poor review (like I said, I’m easy to please), but this meal really deserved it.

Fortunately (or unfortunately?), I had some time to cool off, so I decided to spare you the details. But, I will leave you will a direct quote from my husband, who basically sums up the experience: “It was the worst service of my life.” Agreed.

Dinner started with a round of drinks. I ordered the American Flight of white wines, which featured two wines from California and one from Oregon. I enjoyed them all, but the La Crema Chardonnay was my favorite!

For dinner, the four of us decided to order the Big Night Out, which was a four-course meal. It was the best value for our dollar and we got to experience a “culinary journey” from start to finish.

We started with Traditional Cheese Fondue.

Then, we moved onto salads. I ordered the Spinach Mushroom Salad, which came with spinach, baby Portobello mushrooms, red onion, and Roma tomatoes with a warm Burgundy Shallot Vinaigrette.

Up next was the entrée, which was a mix of raw meats, fish, and vegetables that we cooked in Coq au Vin (flavors of fresh herbs, mushrooms, garlic, spices and burgundy wine).

The food at the Melting Pot was great; the service was not.

We finished off the meal with chocolate fondue. I picked the Flaming Turtle (chocolate with caramel and chopped pecans) for the table. I loved it at the Melting Pot’s blogger event back in June, so I had to order it again.

  1. You pay enough money at the Melting Pot as it is for as my Mom would say, “Cooking your own food.” That amount of money doesn’t need to include the worst service ever!

    The more important matter at hand is your new layout, it is AWESOME! Love it!!

  2. I had a similar horrific experience at the melting pot as well. The food is great, but the service was horrid. It was almost 2 years ago now. Our grumpy waiter brought our check to the table with our meal. wtf? Hello maybe we wanted dessert! Of course we did, that was one of the main points in going there. I haven’t been back since, since it was a pricey disappointment. 🙁 It’s a shame. ps. love the new design, has a antiquey/modern feel. 🙂

  3. I’ve really wanted to try the Melting Pot but we don’t have one in the area. Sorry your service sucked. With the invention of blogging people in the customer service field should really pay more attention to the quality of the service they give. You never know who you’re serving!

  4. Hi Tina- I think you should share the details of what happened. After all the tweets, and the build up, you didn’t share the experience with your readers. Why keep it a secret?

    1. It’s not a secret. Just your typical crappy service– long waits, forgetting orders, asking multiple times for things and not getting them, etc. I didn’t see the point of writing a super negative post when I was over it.

  5. I really don’t enjoy The Melting Pot. The cheese part is okay but the rest of it kind of grosses me out. And come to think of it, our service (in Oklahoma) wasn’t great either.
    LOVE La Crema Chard. So delicious!

  6. Did you tip? This is an ongoing debate w / friends. I don’t tip if the service is rude or terrible (but only if its quite bad).

        Ok, i see that this post is old. However, the above comment pisses me off. I work at the melting pot. It is BY FAR the hardest serving job anyone will ever encounter. The server does not just drop drinks, drop food and leave. We make your cheese, we spend time talking to you, we give you detailed instructions about everything. You see how long this takes with YOUR table so you should understand when the server has four tables the wait time is longer than any other restaurant. Now, not tipping someone for “bad service” is terrible. You don’t know what goes on behind the scenes that could’ve caused that person to give you bad service. Things happen in the kitchen, behind the bar, etc that can cause things to be delayed or wrong.. yet people always blame the server. If you tip them nothing, that means they have to pay for you to sit there for two hours. We get taxed regardless if we are tipped or not. We also have to tip out the bussers, hosts, and bartender. So if you tip NOTHING, not only are you hurting the server, you’re hurting the hostess that sat you, the bartender that made your drinks, and the busser that has to clean up after you when you leave.

        Have some compassion and empathy and understand not everything can always go 100 percent perfect.

  7. Love the new look Tina! I know you weren’t loving the “old-new” look, so I’m glad you love this one! I’ve never been to the Melting Pot (we don’t have them in Canada) but it looks like a fun idea, and I’m disappointed to hear from you and other comments that it’s really not that great.

  8. I have only been to the Melting Pot once and will never return. I also had horrible service (and the food was subpar). I’m not super hard to please either but it was pretty atrocious. Here’s to better meals in the future!

  9. we went there for our traditional christmas eve dinner and we were REALLY disappointed as well. not by the service, although that was lackluster, but by the food portions. They had literally cut them in half than they were earlier this year. it was really bad. don’t know if that tradition will continue!

  10. Love the blog! I went to the melting pot restaurant in Edmonton,Canada with a few girlfriends for a cookie exchange and we had the worst service too! I heard they’re known for bad and slow service! Atleast there food is yummy!!

  11. Too bad your service was bad there. My husband and I love Melting Pot and have been there for a few of our anniversary’s and other special times.

  12. That sucks! I hate when I have bad service at a restaurant. I go to restaurants to eat a nice meal and be treated decently. Otherwise I’d just stay home, save the money, and cook myself.

    I’ve had some REALLY bad experiences. I write a bad review on Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, and my blog. If it’s bad, the world will KNOW it!! Plus I’ve complained a few times to management.

  13. I love fondue but I also experienced the WORST SERVICE EVER at the Melting Pot. Did you go to the one in Bedford? (I think it is?) That is were my boyfriend and I went when we had awful service. They forgot about us so we didn’t even get MENUS for an HOUR!!!!! There were plenty of waitstaff walking by and finally one of them started to notice (although it seemed more like they were ignoring the possibility of a problem) and we were able to flag them down and say something. The manager came over and gave us free chocolate… but I personally wasn’t pleased with that. It was honestly so bad that they should have compted our meal entirely… we haven’t been back since. We just make fondue at home now!

  14. I have heard so many complaints about The Melting Pot’s service, and from locations all over the place. I’ve always wanted to eat there but for the price and the bad service reviews, I can’t bring myself to do it!

  15. La Crema Chardonnay is my absolute favorite wine! In fact, me and my three sisters went through 3 bottles on Christmas Eve. It is all of our favorites! And we can usually find it pretty cheap at Sam’s Club. My sister bought the 3 standard sized bottles there for 13.99, and they are usually around 17-18.99. Or just get the HUGE bottle for a party… or yourself (lol)!

    I became aware of your recent visit to the Melting Pot through your tweets and blog postings.
    Please accept my sincere apologies for your less-than-perfect experience last Tuesday evening.
    For reasons which were partially out of our control, we found ourselves severely under-resourced for the reservations we had already booked for Tuesday.
    As a result, our service levels fell a long way short of our standards and I am very sorry that you were unable to fully enjoy the dining experience that the Melting Pot has to offer.
    We absolutely realize that excellent food has to be complemented by great service and pleasant surroundings.
    We try very hard to meet and exceed all these requirements and are disappointed with ourselves when we fall short.
    I hope you will be able to visit us again at some time in the future and that we will be able to deliver a totally outstanding dining experience.

  19. I’m not shocked by the chorus of complaints outlined in your blog. I knew someone who worked at a Melting Pot in Hoboken New Jersey and he told me that the servers are pressured to “turn tables”, “drop checks” and “get the customers out” by the rude and insensative owner. So if that’s the plan, it only confirms that the four course meal comes with a one time plan to vacate the customers as quickly as possible, compromising good service and professionalism! For the woman who works at Melting Pot, forgive me but I don’t care what goes on in the kitchen, with the bartender, management, or any of the various insignificant and pathetic excuses you stated in your substandard explanation about who suffers when a server isn’t tipped! Perhaps YOU and other servers should remember that customers expect YOU to provide friendly, professional AND GOOD SERVICE resulting in a GOOD TIP that’s shared by the various people like the bartender and others employed by Melting Pot. How about that? Otherwise bad service, slow service and rude service should result in ZERO TIP! End of story, we have become a society loaded with an annoying entitlement complex and I resent it! Oh and the new blog looks GRRRREAT!

  20. I have to be honest, I’ve eaten at the one in Hoboken and I thought it was absolutely disgusting aside from the dessert portion of the meal. The cheese we ordered ended up being disgusting and the entree reminded me of all pre made frozen food items. The items served with the fondue were pathetic. If i ever go back it would only be for dessert.
