Nicole Richie’s Halloween Plea

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

Happy Halloween, friends! Mal and I started our celebration a day early with a small get-together at our house.

I baked festive fall cookies.

Using my favorite sugar cookie recipe from Mama Pea’s cookbook and some colorful leaf-shaped sprinkles.

Mal made Pigs in a Blanket, but he used kielbasa instead of hot dogs. Good call, Mal.

IMG_0007 (800x600)

Unfortunately for Murphy, Mal didn’t drop any kielbasa on the floor while making them.

Right before our friends arrived, Mal and I decorated our house with some spider webs from the dollar store. (I know, we go all out for Halloween.)

IMG_0008 (800x600)

I should have known that paying a $1 for Halloween decorations wasn’t a great idea. The spider webs were terrible!

IMG_0011 (800x600)

Instead of pulling apart into webs, they broke into clumps.

Eventually, we sort of got the hang of it. We just needed to be really gentle.

IMG_0023 (600x800)

Oooh, spooky!

A little while later, our friends, John and Alexa, arrived at our house. Mal and John planned to watch the Pats game, and Alexa and I planned to drink wine and talk about pugs. She loves pugs (and wine) as much as I do!

On the menu: Kielbasa Pigs in a Blanket and Taco Dip.

And, later, two kinds of sugar cookies with frosting.

Alexa made sugar cookies with frosting, too. Great minds think alike!

Last night was a fun way to celebrate Halloween. I used to love dressing up for rowdy house parties, but sitting on the couch with friends and eating sugar cookies was so much better. (Man, I am such a grandma.) Murphy also loves Halloween, especially the costumes.

This morning’s breakfast was Oats in a Jar with a big scoop of canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice mixed in. Obviously, I needed to hit up the pumpkin today.

My iced coffee tasted almost like Marylou’s Almond Joy iced coffee. I added chocolate soy milk and a tiny amount of coconut extract to it. It’s not as sweet as Marylou’s, but it’s pretty close to the real deal. I’m still working on it.

Oats in a Jar = pug creeper.

I eventually gave Murphy the peanut butter jar to lick.

Nicole Richie’s Halloween Plea

Have you guys heard about Nicole Richie’s Halloween plea yet? According to US Weekly, Nicole wrote this plea on her Facebook page: “Girls, can we all pledge that we will not dress slutty for this Halloween? The jig is up.”

When I first heard about Nicole’s plea, I was all about it. Right on, Nicole. Let’s band together and not dress slutty on Halloween. But, then, the more I thought about it, the more I disagreed with it. I mean, as a grown woman, shouldn’t I have the right to dress any way that I want? I actually don’t have the desire to dress up as a ‘slutty’ whatever on Halloween, but if I did, shouldn’t I do what makes me happy?

Question of the Day

What do you think about Nicole Richie’s Halloween plea?

P.S. I saw this Squash Prep School article in Real Simple the other day and thought it might be helpful. It shows you how to peel, seed, and slice various types of squash.

  1. I LOVE sugar cookies with frosting.Even the junkie ones from the grocery store. haha

I think Nicole’s plea is perhaps a little hypocritical. Hasn’t she worn her fair share of “slutty” outfits…in real life, not just on Halloween?? I think people should wear what makes them happy, and if a woman wants to be a “slutty” whatever on Halloween, I say go for it! It’s fun to do something out of the ordinary every once in a while. 🙂

  2. Those sugar cookies Alexa made look like the Halloween Funfetti cake mix cookies! Love those things!

As for Nicole Richie’s Halloween plea… I think you’re right. Women should have the freedom to wear what they want. At the same time, I certainly won’t be out there with a slutty costume on because that’s just not my personality. I also am amazed at the little amount of costume women choose to wear at times, but to each their own I suppose!

  3. I tend to agree with Nicole although I have never been a fan of slutty costumes so that is why. I can see why you think that women should be able to decide for themselves (and I totally agree with you). I think that there is pressure on young(ish) women to dress slutty since they are trying to fit in and be “cool”. This discussion reminds me of Mean Girls where Lindsay Lohan doesn’t know that it is cool to be a slutty version of something for Halloween so she gets all dressed up in some kind of scary bride costume. People would ask her “Why are you so scary?” And her response: “It’s Halloween……??”

All in all, I agree that coming from Nicole Richie it is a bit hypocritical but I am totally on board with people suggesting not being a skank for Halloween! It is your own choice but maybe for those who do it just to fit in/be like their friends will stop!

    1. @Kelly: I completely agree.

Yes, Nicole has worn her fair share of “slutty” outfits, and thats fine. Its her choice. Yes, women should be able to chose whatever they want on Halloween, including “slutty” costumes, *if they want*.

However, I’m tired of going to costume stores and having the ONLY options for women be slutty *everything*. 1. That is NOT a good example to set for the younger generation. 2. There are plenty of woman who want a cool costume not slutty nurse, slutty fireman, slutty police. SO. OVER. IT.

  4. yum, those sugar cookies look beautiful!! looks like a fun night, you’re not a grandma!

never heard about Nicole’s plea? crazy! get into it, and wear what you want!!

  5. Oh I love taco dip!! I have been craving it so bad lately… and I won’t even start on how I feel about Nicole’s comment… we’ll just say it would have something to do with a pot and a kettle :S

  6. If it was someone else who made the plea, I would love it…but given the fact that she sure has worn her fair share of slutty outfits, I can’t take it seriously.

  7. I love sugar cookies with frosting—but only if the frosting is reeeeaalllly delicious. Haha.

I think that is a great plea–I am sick of seeing women and respectable ladies dress up like they are hookers…I think it is sad. However, people can choose how they like, and I don’t think a plea like that coming from a lady who does not dress super modestly does much….but that is just my opinion!

I am totally wearing black and orange to teach my fitness classes and I am busting out the pumpkin. YAH for celebrating as a young adult-haha.

  8. Haha – her plea is kind of funny given her past, but I respect it. I’m also just a HUGE Nicole Richie fan so it’s hard for me to feel like she does any wrong 🙂

  9. I feel like her “plea” is totally out of left field. She used to have a show where she dressed slutty and acted dumb with Paris Hilton and made MONEY off of it…However, since she is now a Mom, maybe her views have changed.

I agree that every girl has a right to choose how she dresses, but I also think women should value themselves and not put everything out on display for everyone to see. I mean, you can’t really criticize men for objectifying women if you dress to encourage it.

  10. I think the intention behind Nicole’s plea was a good one, but at the same time, I do think a woman should feel empowered to dress as whatever the hell she wants on Halloween. I do have to admit, I was having fun coming up with some tongue-in-cheek takes on slutty Halloween costumes. I should probably also disclose that was I was, like, ten, I went as one of the “lovely ladies” from Les Miserables for Halloween, having no IDEA they were prostitutes! Hahah my mom seriously should have talked to me before I showed up at people’s doors asking for candy like that.

  11. I think I lean more towards Nicole…why does every nurse/cowgirl/bee/princess/etc. have to be slutty?! It’s so hard to find costumes for those of us who don’t want their boobs hanging out 🙂

  12. That taco dip looks so yummy! How did you make it? (sorry but I need a recipe for everything 🙂 I cant ever just wing it!)

As for Nicole Richie’s comment I happen to think that some of her outfits should be used for a slutty Halloween costume so I don’t really understand where she is coming from??

  13. I’m a bit torn…a part of me agrees with Nicole…it is very tiring to always see girls running around half dressed. I always feel like they’re trying to get attention. But yes, on the other hand, we should all have the right to do what we want and what makes us happy. I’m just not one of those girls…I’m way too modest 🙂

Actually, I would draw the line at wearing “slutty” costumes to work. I just heard them talking about women wearing their skimpy costumes to work this morning on the radio and I was a bit shocked…ummm can you say awkward? Maybe it’s different in certain work environments, but in a corporate office I would think that’s a big nono.

  14. i completely agree with nicole. you’re right, tina, that women can dress however they want, but in my opinion, halloween has become an excuse for these provocative, slutty costumes to the extent that it puts pressure on girls to conform to that standard. for example, when i was in college, you were almost looked at strangely if you wore a traditional (conservative) halloween costume, or if you did not “slut out” your costume. i definitely understand your point, but it think on the other hand, halloween costumes for females have gotten out of control.

  15. I think the only reason why Nicole Richie made this plea is beacuse she’s had her fair share of slutty costumes! Not fair in my opinion… every gal has their college / single days! Then you are DONE with it. (PS I was a grandma too this year – Europeans just don’t do Halloween like we Americans do!)

  16. you are not a grandma! My husband and I had a few invites to costume partys, etc. for Saturday night and we decided that a nice dinner out together and a movie by the fire seemed like a way better way to celebrate the holiday and stay warm with all the snow. So if you are a grandma for your celebration, SO AM I!

  17. I’m uncomfortable with my boyfriend walking around if there are girls in slutty Halloween costumes, but if I’m one of them, or if it’s not really out in public, it’s fine! It’s more of a jealousy thing I guess, or just that I don’t want my boyfriend seeing way more cleavage, etc. than he needs to from strange girls.

Also, dads and old men. They see you too.

  18. I am all for NOT dressing sluttastic. I always try to err on the side of funny as opposed to side o’ whorish. There is also a big difference between sexy and slutty. They ARE mutually exclusive. I am planning on going as a farmer, but depending on my schedule, I might be an unwashed runner.

  19. I did not hear about her plea, nor did I follow it. I don’t think I looked “slutty”, but I think it’s fun to get a bit sexied up for Halloween. It’s not like I’m walking around and selling myself for the night…now that would not be classy.

  20. I think what she is saying should be applied more towards younger girls, however for adult women, I feel they’re capable of making up their own mind on whether or not they want to wear a more sexed up costume. To me, I’m not for dressing up like that, I mean, the sexy nurse etc is all played out. I’m more of a “creative” type and would rather dress “silly” and fully clothed instead of a typical costume that has been seen before. I would go as Clementine from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind if I wanted to, ha.

  21. I think the pledge is great for teens, but for adults, eh, let us do what we want. Yes a lot of the costumes are slutty, but if you’re pretty straightlaced like me, then it’s fun to have one day out of the year to be something you’re not.

  22. What frustrates me about her ‘plea’ is that it targets women, basically blaming the shenanigans of halloween on the sexy outfits we may wear…I think a more appropriate plea (if she really wants to get her message across) would have been ‘Hey guys, this year don’t objectify the women in your life if they wear something sexy on halloween, respect them, have fun, and get all gussied up yourself! And gals, if you want to get a little sexy for halloween, don’t do it just to get the attention of all of those drunk guys, do it for yourself & have lots of fun!” Because the issues isn’t that women are dressed sexy, any one should be able to dress up in any way–the issue is how men and women react.

Love the pooch pictures as always!

  23. Love your take on Nicole Richie’s plea! I agree. Frankly, we have the right to dress however we want for Halloween (or any day of the year, for that matter). Perhaps the ‘slutty’ costume route isn’t the most original, but if that makes someone feel happy and confident on a fun day, then she should absolutely go for it!

I guess that I take this whole ‘slutty’ thing to heart. I don’t think it’s right to single someone out for dressing provocatively (a notion that differs from culture to culture, town to town, person to person, etc.) – it just perpetuates unfair stereotypes about women. You can dress ‘provocatively’ and be a very smart, very savvy, very empowered woman. It’s a matter of personal choice, and I’m uncomfortable with denouncing women for dressing how they choose – on Halloween, no less – because we think it’s lame, or uncreative, or whorish. Hypocrisy does a disservice to *every* woman.

This Halloween, I’m dressing as a Robert Palmer back-up dancer, and I’m wearing a very short dress. I’m thrilled about my costume, and refuse to feel like I’m doing anything ‘wrong’ by exposing my legs!

  24. I don’t think grown women need to stop dressing slutty. Adults can do whatever they want and if they want to dress like that to feel better about themselves or to get attention, so be it. However, I think the problem is with younger kids dressing inappropriately and thinking their outfit needs to be sexy.

  25. I have three kids and when I dropped my 7 year old son at a friend’s house for a daytime Halloween party this weekend the mom had on a slutty costume. REALLY??? There were little kids there! How incredibly inappropriate for that age group. Trick or treating also offers view of several women in slutty outfits. These are fine for adult parties but for events that involve kids, keep it clean please.

  26. I see both sides of the argument. I think that any adult woman should be able to choose what she wears on Halloween (slutty or not), but when I walk into a costume shop and ALL I see are slutty costumes, I think that is really sad. It shows how our society feels about women.

What really makes me mad is when I see parents at those costume shops with their teenage daughters and it’s the teenage daughter that is getting a slutty costume. WTF?!?! Don’t these parents have any sense?? I don’t have children, but I cannot imagine my husband or I letting a young daughter dress up as a slutty nurse or police officer for Halloween.

  27. I agree with her, though I’m not a big fan of women being called “slutty”. I hate what Halloween has turned into – now it’s just an excuse for women to dress in scantily clad outfits and for men to comment on said outfits and try to hook up with whoever is dressed in the least clothes. My old college campus was absolutely vile in that respect, women would go out mostly exposed (in cold weather, no less) and men would be complete creepers. I just wish people would use Halloween as an excuse to have fun, dress “scary” and eat candy.

  28. I agree to let us live our lives! I never dress slutty so if I want to look like a slutty dr. suess one day a year…SO BE IT! Plus, like all the other comments have said, Nicole has probs done enough “slutty” for all of us combined…let us in on that action miss!

  29. I agree with Katy. I don’t walk around in spandex mini dresses EVER. So if for one night I want to freeze my lady bits off and wear stilettos then I’m going to. (Though this year I’m actually not slutty in the least.) I really don’t want Nicole Richie (Didn’t she once pee on a pool table in a bar?) judging me.

  30. Happy Halloween! I think staying inside is a lot more fun than going out. I’m getting old too. 😛

I kind of agree with what Nicole Richie is going with. I do think that a lot of costumes out there are slutty, but hey, if someone wants to dress like that one day out of the year, more power to them. I was a beer wench one year; probably one of the most fun Halloween’s for me!

  31. I think girls can get away with slutty costumes until they finish college. After that, the slutty costumes just kind of seem pathetic. Maybe I just feel that way because I’m overweight (not that I would have been caught dead in a slutty costume when I was thinner).

  32. I do think that coming from Nicole Richie, of all people, that’s an interesting plea. But I think of what Muhammad Ali reportedly told one of his girls when she showed up wearing inappropriate clothes: “Hana, everything that God made valuable in the world is covered and hard to get to.” He went on to detail how you have to mine diamonds and search for pearls and concluded by telling her: “Your body is sacred. You’re far more precious than diamonds and pearls, and you should be covered too.” Why aren’t women grasping this?
I don’t understand when Halloween became “sex-it-up” holiday? I do think it’s a surprising source, but I’m going with Nicole on this. I say, ladies, your body is worth more than that! Look like you believe in your worth year-round!

  33. first, to those who find Nicole Richie’s comment hypocritical — people change!

i think the whole “slut-or-not” dilemma is a feminist quandry. first, there’s the thought that women should dress however they want. then, there’s the thought that women should empower themselves and NOT dress for guy’s attention. women should attract guys with their personality and intelligence, and not their (lack of) clothing.

my solution? wear a slutty Robin (from batman) costume and wear leggings under it 🙂

  34. So happy to be a part of your party 🙂

I don’t have an issue with women dressing slutty…it just bothers me when it’s totally inappropriate for the age of the girl. Like the sexy candy corn witch in Gigi’s KINDERGARTEN class last year. So sad.

  35. I agree! Wear what you want. But seriously, you could be more creative with your costume than just a sexy-whatever (nurse, cop, pirate, etc.). But if that is what you want, ok!

And I agree, I’d rather hang out with a few friends than go to a house party but I do miss dressing up! Perhaps, next year, a few friends over, costume required?
