My Kick-Butt Boston Marathon Playlist + Why It’s Only 2 Hours Of Music

Race day is just ONE WEEK away! Ahhhhh! ONE WEEK. Holy crap.

So I mentioned my kick-butt marathon playlist that helped me PR my recent 5K over the weekend, and I wanted to share it with you guys because it really is an awesome running mix. I started making it back in January, so these songs are my very favorites from my training. I either listened to them on Pandora or over the KFIT stereo system (while running on the treadmill), so any song that I really liked, I made sure to record it. With Pandora, I took a screenshot of the song to write down later, and, on the treadmill, I used the “Notes” app.

By early-April, I had a list of 33 songs, totaling 2 hours and 2 minutes of music, which you probably realize is not enough music for a marathon. Well, during my training, I listened to a lot of podcasts, especially on my long runs. I would usually run out of new material toward the end of my workout, so I would switch to Pandora. The music would pump me up and motivate me to run at a faster pace, so I am hoping this same thing happens during the marathon. I actually talked to Monica about this podcast-music thing during the Duxbury Half Marathon, and she said that she doesn’t listen to music until the halfway mark of her marathons. BINGO. As soon as she said this, I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do for the marathon. I plan to listen to a couple of my favorite podcasts from mile 1-13.1 and then turn on my music for the remainder of the race.

And, without further ado, here is my kick-butt Boston Marathon playlist. The songs are in no particular order, and I plan to put the playlist on shuffle and just enjoy the ride. I will probably add a few more songs (I would LOVE to hear your favorites!), and I might make a separate “FINISH” playlist for the final few miles to really help me push through the pain. We shall see!

Question of the Day

What is your favorite pump-you-up running song?

P.S. I recently saved this post for some of my upcoming travel and just wanted to share. You can basically mix and match these exercises to make some pretty sweet body weight workouts you can do anywhere!

  3. I love your playlist! I’m a total music runner. I always run stronger when I’m listening to music. I have a lot of these songs on my playlist. I also really like will.i.am’s Go Hard or Go Home. I love to find songs that also have inspiring lyrics that remind me of what I’m trying to do in the moment, particularly when the miles get tough.

  4. Hey Tina! As a three time Boston Marathoner, I would recommend trying to ditch the headphones and enjoy the crowd (at least for Miles 20ish – 26.2!). My training coach one year told me “if you’re listening to music, you’re going to miss the entire Boston Marathon” and I could not agree more. I almost always listen to music when I run, but aside from a few songs during particularly tough parts of the course, I found the crowd noise was more motivating than anything on my iPhone.

Obviously do what works for you and coincides with your training plan, but make sure you take advantage of what makes Boston so special. GOOD LUCK and enjoy every minute and mile of it. You’re going to do awesome!!!

  5. A “FINISH” playlist is such a GREAT idea! I’m always pressing next like a crazy person to find a super motivating song to help me push to the finish! 🙂 I will definitely be using this idea!

  6. Gotta add Unbelievable by EMF, Coast to Coast (the Stompers), Tenth Ave Freeze Out (Bruce Springsteen), She’s So Cold (Rolling Stones), I’m Winning (Santana)

  7. I just have to share what has quickly become my favorite song this spring and as I heard it on XM Radio i thought this could be such a motivational song for the Marathon. “I’m Good” by Mowgli.

  8. You can never go wrong with “Going the Distance” by Cake. I’m pretty sure it’s every runners’ to go get-pumped song!

  9. One Republic is soooo good
I like old school when I’m running, I think because of the rhythm
    Its Tricky-Run DMC
    Opp-Naughty By Nature
    Work It Out-Jurassic 5
    Influence-Jurassic 5
    And then these ones too
