Are you ready to tackle the day? I sure am! Murphy, however, went back to bed after he ate his breakfast. What a lazy bum.

I actually had a rough night of sleep last night, so I woke up groggy and not super psyched to start the day. Working from home and making my own schedule, I could sleep the day away, but I almost always get up with my alarm at 6:01 AM and start my day.

On the mornings when I really struggle to get out of bed, I usually just need a little morning motivation to get me going. I mean, I could think: Ugh, I need to get up because I have to work and my To Do list is a million miles long. But, instead I try to put a more positive spin on starting the day. These three thoughts always seem to motivate me and start my day off on the right foot:

Get Up, Get Going, Get Dressed

I’ve blogged about “Get Up, Get Going, Get Dressed” a couple of times already on CNC, but it really is my go-to inspiration when I’m not feeling motivated. It’s from a book called Fit from Within, which, as cheesy as it may sound, helped me change my thinking about my body and my weight. Here are some other health and weight loss books that I’ve loved and found helpful.


Carpe Diem

I think of carpe diem as my life motto. It’s one of my motivational mantras, and it’s even engraved on my Road ID. There’s just something about those words that is so empowering. Seize the day! It always motivates me to get my butt in gear with regard to all aspects of my life.


Good Things Happen to Those Who Work Hard

I have no idea where this piece of motivation came from, but it’s been my “favorite quotation” on my Facebook page since I signed up in 2005, and I truly believe it. In all aspects of your life, work hard and good things will happen!



Rise and shine! It’s breakfast time! (Clearly, I’m jazzed this morning.)

I mixed up the batter for OMG! Pancakes last night before bed, so I cooked them on our Griddler this morning for Mal and me.

I spread almond butter in between and on top of my pancakes. (I don’t know why, but typing this about my almond butter and pancakes always sounds so dirty to me. LOL!)

Last night’s dinner was a delicious one! In fact, it was so delicious, I ended up eating two servings of it.

I made Shepherd’s Pie, but instead of the traditional mashed potatoes, corn, and ground beef, I used mashed sweet potatoes, peas, and ground turkey. It was pretty much all of my favorite foods in one dish, so I really loved it. Here’s the recipe!

Question of the Day

What gets you out of bed in the morning?



  1. My job gets me out of bed in the morning. That whole “earning a living because there’s nobody to bankroll me” thing is a lot of motivation.

  2. I have the same mindset! I just tell myself to get up and get dressed….If I’m still feeling groggy after 15 min of already being awake then maybe I’ll take a day off. Usually it’s the initial “getting up” that is hard to do! Once I’m up, I’m usually ok!

  3. I applaud your morning motivation, Tina! Personally, I work a 9-5 job (closer to 8:30-6) and that forces me to get out of bed. But if I were self-employed and sans sleeping problems, it would be a hell of a lot harder!

  4. The promise of a delicous breakfast and coffee! I don’t know if I would feel the same way if I had dinner foods for breakfast haha. I LOVE me some protein pancakes and oatmeal!

    I’ve never heard of that book Fit From Within. Definitely going to check it out!

  5. My dog gets me out of bed in the morning. There’s nothing like puppy kisses to wake you up in the morning! I always set my alarm just in case, but it hasn’t gone off once since I got my dog last August.

    Once I’m up, it’s easy for me to get moving. I can’t imagine laying in bed until noon anymore. The morning is my most productive time!

  6. I’ve always been a morning person but sometimes struggle with the motivation. Knowing that if I get up and get in a workout then I’ve done “at least one good thing” for the day and if nothing else productive happens, I have that! Although, other productive things usually follow… Happy Hump Day!

  7. That shephards pie remix looks pretty darn good!! my husband and I love to throw together meals just like that!

    sadly, coffee may be what motivates me to wake up in the mornings…lol! I work out AFTER work, so the only thing immediately waiting for me upon waking is getting ready for work….no fun!!

  8. Breakfast and coffee! Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I am always excited to enjoy it with my mug of coffee before getting ready for the day.

  9. I love that Shepherd’s pie, it looks amazing. Will definitely try it. For me, I always remember that getting up will feel that much better after my workout. I love sweating in the am!

  10. I think it’s key to get up and get going when you work from home. While I don’t only work from home, I do freelance and when I had a LOT of freelance going on, I knew I needed to wake up first thing in the morning and get my day started so that I would be more likely to actually tackle my to-do list completely.
    And COFFEE is my motivation to get out of bed… 😉

  11. I’m very goal oriented so I try to plan something fun, no matter how small, each day. That helps with motivation. Oh and coffee, definitely coffee

  12. my motivation usually is if I don’t start my day without some sort of exercise and endorphin release, I’m cranky and spend the rest of day thinking I should have really done something. I don’t obsess–it’s just that lingering cranky feeling all day. know what I mean?
    my favorite mantra about the few downs (rising early!) that come with the natural ups with life from the movie ‘A League of their Own’:
    “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The “hard” is what makes it great.”

  13. Crossfit gets me out of bed in the mornings! I’m up at 4:30 to hit a 5:15 WOD, and that’s worth it every time. (And on rest days I’m up to feed the dogs because they like that whole 4:30 breakfast schedule!)

  14. Getting my sweat on gets me out of bed–so I can get more work done earlier in the day, and relax/have fun by 6 or 7 (I have tons going on).

  15. I work from home too and would probably stay in pajamas but I have two dogs who are my motivation to get dressed. Our routine is to go for a walk before breakfast and so have to get dressed as to not embarrass myself! 😉

Well this may sound silly but every morning I kind of throw myself out of bed (sometimes literally rolling onto the ground) and do 10 pushups and jumping jacks and sometimes some yoga stretches. It’s a routine I started aaaages ago, in high school, and it just works for me and working my muscles feels so good and makes me want to get up! Oh and ditto to knowing a yummy breakfast and coffee is ahead. (or knowing that I get to do something vulgar to some pancakes, lol, what you wrote does sound so dirty ha)

  17. I love Victoria Moran! And Bethenny. Those are two of my healthy living/eating books, too! Victoria Moran has many good books, I like her a little more than Geneen Roth, but both are similar. I get motivated by knowing my workout will make me feel so much better and start the day off right – that and the promise of coffee with breakfast after the gym! 🙂

  18. Knowing a good breakfast awaits me usually gets me out of bed! Seeing the sun doesn’t hurt either.

  19. I am sooo not a morning person. I get out of bed because Kevin is standing there saying,”Okay, I’m gonna go let Boyd out. You better get upppp.” He probably gets up an hour before me. Someday…. somedayyyy… I hope to be a morning workout person. But we’re just fans of being married without kids and being able to sleep a little!! Haha.

  20. Hands down my Pug gets me up in the morning. No matter how hard I try to ignore him, he isn’t having it. He will lick my face and if I’m laying on my back he will lay on my chest and lick my face. He also likes to get an itch away from my face and whine or do the famous Pug snort that blows snot in my face! All in all, I would say that it’s not a bad way to wake up in the morning because I usually wake up with a smile!!

      1. @Tina: Maybe it is. He can’t wait to get up in the morning and get his medicine(that is given to him in peanut better 😉 ) along with his breakfast.

  21. I’m lucky in that I’m a morning person. I usually wake up when the sun rises and have no issues getting out of bed. I love being up early, hearing the birds chirp, and having a cup of coffee and relaxing before the rest of the world gets up.

  22. Most mornings, it’s my coffee that gets me out of bed in the morning! Also, instead of focusing on all the annoying crap I have planned, I do try to focus on at least one thing I can look forward to, even if it’s just a TV show or the promise of a half hour of reading my book!

I teach bootcamps first thing in the morning, and when the alarm goes of at 5am, I just remember that they count on me to be peppy and motivating since many of my morning bootcampers aren’t “morning girls” and look to get going from me. Carpe Diem is often in my head when it’s time to sit in front of the computer to be productive!

  24. Tina, I really want to try the recipe for your OMG Pancakes. You make the batter the night before but do you have any idea how long that batter with keep in the fridge? If I make it one night, and only want to make a pancake or two the next morning and save the remainder of the batter for the next morning, would that be ok? I don’t see anything in the ingredients that might go bad quickly. What’s your opinion on this?

  25. During the week it’s breakfast. It’s my favorite part of my day before I have to go to work. I make good healthy breakfast and sit down at the dining room table and have my coffee and catch on tv shows from the night before on hulu. I love it.

    On the weekends, it’s usually either my morning run or yoga depending on what day it is.

  26. Love this post. Breakfast and the idea of working out in the evening get me out of bed bright and early. I love having my evenings free to cook, watch TV, and just relax, so the idea of having to throw a workout in the mix is seriously enough to get me up and going!

  27. I know this sounds bad… but I totally guilt myself into getting up at 5 and getting to the gym before work. I will convince myself how much better I will feel if I go, and how much worse I’ll feel if I don’t…. works (almost) every time!

  28. I feel SO much better about starting my day after I’ve worked out. I absolutely love practicing yoga or Pilates in the morning; it puts me in a good frame of mind and boosts my energy. (I’m convinced it makes me look better, too – a little sweat in the morning reduces eye puffiness!) I try to work out every morning, even if only for 30 minutes.

  29. Sometimes it’s so hard to get out of bed, but I’m finally seeing results from my workout efforts in the morning. I have to think of that and then I’ll want to get up. I don’t work out every morning, so I remind myself that “tomorrow is my sleep late day.” 🙂
    Also, now I really want pancakes.

  30. coffee + reading + animal crackers! i wake up extra early to catch up on emails, blogs, and books for about 45 minutes, accompanied by a nice mug of coffee and a few animal crackers. waking up to do something fun makes waking up easier. plus the little caffeine/calorie boost gets me going. after my little routine, THEN i go for a run or to the gym and start my day. i oversleep a lot less now that i have something to look forward to first thing in the morning!

  31. I always get up early and first thing I do is try to get a cup of coffee, read blogs, e-mail, etc. and get my workout in. Just knowing how I’ll feel afterwards and being able to get the most out of my day helps me get out of bed.

  32. BREAKFAST makes me get out of bed! I’m also a morning person so I can’t wait to get the majority of my tasks done before people have even had their first cup of coffee.. 🙂 People think I’m crazy like that….

  33. My dog! I run with him every morning and when I try to hit snooze or take him for just a walk he either a) jumps on me and licks me until I get out of bed or b) pulls on the leash to make me run faster. Gotta love him for helping me meet my fitness goals!
