Happy birthday to my wonderful mother! She turns 49 again this year! ๐Ÿ˜‰

For Mother’s Day this past year, I wrote a post about 10 Things My Mom Taught Me. I thought about writing a similar post for her birthday, but then my sister used one of my mom’s famous โ€œmom-ismsโ€ย the other day, so it inspired this post. It’s funny how often my sister and I both use โ€œmom-ismsโ€ย in our everyday conversations. Gah! Are we turning into our mother?!

Here are 10 of my favorite โ€œmom-ismsโ€ย from my mom:

  1. If it was a dog, it would have bit ya.
  2. I’m not running a restaurant.
  3. If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
  4. The dishes aren’t going to wash themselves.
  5. I don’t have a pot to piss in.
  6. It’s just money.
  7. Because I’m your mother, that’s why.
  8. Life isn’t fair.
  9. You’re killing me, Smalls.
  10. It’s just a little cat hair.

What are your favorite โ€œmom-ismsโ€ย (or โ€œdad-ismsโ€ย)?

The other day, I received a question from a reader asking how I come up with ideas for my morning oatmeal. I rarely eat the same bowl twice, but, often times, the fresh produce in my house determines the flavor of my oatmeal. For instance, a very ripe banana in my fruit bowl was the first ingredient into my oatmeal this morning. No food goes to waste in our house!

I also get ideas from other bloggers (canned pumpkin), and I’ll just randomly throw in ingredients from my refrigerator and cabinets (nuts, dried fruit, shredded coconut, etc.). I also add chia seeds and ground flaxseed meal to my oatmeal for their omega-3s, and nut butter for its staying powerโ€โ€ it sticks to my ribs and keeps me full for hours.

This morning’s breakfast was a big bowl of banana oatmeal with chopped dates, ground flaxseed meal, and a scoop of Teddie peanut butter. I also enjoyed a very delicious glass of iced coffee.

Over the weekend, Mal brewed a pot of Godiva Chocolate Truffle Coffee that I received from the Foodbuzz Featured Publisher Program. Remember the Godiva Caramel Pecan Bark Coffee? I mean, how could you forget?! Well, the Chocolate Truffle flavor is just as dessert-y. It has a nice strong chocolaty flavor with a smooth, creamy finish, especially when you add a splash of soy milk to it.

Mal is also a huge fan of this coffee. When we were at Dunkin Donuts yesterday, he didn’t order an iced coffee and instead made a Chocolate Truffle iced coffee at home. Mal really loves Dunkin Donuts iced coffee, so this definitely says something!

Off to a fun event and then to my mom’s birthday party!

  1. Happy Birthday to your mom! ๐Ÿ™‚

This isn’t a favorite mom-ism of mine, but it’s one that she says ALL the time: “I’m not wrong.” It’s definitely her favorite saying haha.

  2. This is terrible, but my mom used to always say “that’s going to look atrocious from the street” whenever we would mess with our curtains or put toys and whatnot on our bedroom windowsill…it was kind of ridiculous at the time, but it’s become a joke between my sisters and I.

  3. Haha… my mom-ism is “this isn’t a HOTEL.” LOL! You can’t do as you please.

omg, that godiva chocolate coffee looks amazing.. looks like dessert. how do you make your coffee? like how many tablespoons for an 8 ounce cup? i gotta try this teddie pb you love, i usually eat Whole Foods PB and Peanut Butter & Co.

  4. Happy Birthday to your mom! I want to try that coffee! It sounds amazing! I tried the Pumpkin Spice one that they sent. I haven’t tried the Caramel one yet. Godiva is amazing ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. OMG we TOTALLY say “You’re killin me, Smalls” to my mom and the one time she goes “Well, YOU’RE killin me talls.” We laughed pretty hard realizing she had no idea what movie that was from. We have since looped her in.

    Happy Birthday to your mom!

  6. Happy Birthday to your Mom!!!! She doesn’t look a day over 49!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Love the Mom isms. My mom still tells me to pick up my feet when I walk (and I’m close to your “mom’s age”), and lately has also developed quite the salty tongue when she’s driving. She’s 78, and calls bad drivers a*&holes. Pretty funny to hear….and I suspect she wouldn’t be too impressed if she knew I wrote that. (she’d probably call ME an a*&hole!)

  7. “Because I’m your mother, that’s why.” <– Definitely heard that one before! (Though my mom usually reprimands my brother with that one, not me haha)

Whenever something happens that's not-so-great at the time, my mom often says "Well, at least it will make a good story!" Cutting my leg open during an obstacle course? It will make a good story! Awkward run-in with someone you're trying to avoid? It will make a good story!

  8. Aww, happy birthday to your mom ๐Ÿ™‚
My mom-ism: “I can always tell when you’re lying.” It really pushed me to tell the truth when I was a kid and it made me feel like my mom had some kind of “supersense”

  9. My mom used to always say “every doggie has it’s day” haha. I find myself using mom-isms all the time when teaching my kindergarten students haha

  10. Those coffees sound amazing… do they have more calories that plain old coffee? Or are they the same? What do they use to make them flavoured?
