Packing has officially begun!!!

This afternoon, I spent a solid three hours organizing and packing up our office, and I’m happy to say that it’s just about done! I actually ran out of boxes, so the rest will have to wait until later.

I started with our “junk closet.” I swear, the most random stuff ends up in there.

Among the most random items: a stuffed animal pug, raffle tickets, and a spice rack.

While cleaning the closet, I found my old recipe binder, which once was my go-to cooking tool, long before I had a blog or even owned a cookbook.

Inside the binder is a collection of recipes that I gathered over the years, starting in college until early 2008. The majority of the recipes are torn from magazines, but others are from food packages, restaurants, and photocopies from family and friends.

I can’t believe I have yet to make Starbucks’ Outrageous Oatmeal Cookies! I love them!

There must have been at least 100 recipes inside my binder, but, thankfully, I organized them by category at one point. Sometimes, I’m good like that! 😉

Flipping through my old recipes felt like traveling back in time. A number of the recipes brought back such good memories. It’s neat how recipes can do that, huh?

One thing that I found was a recipe book from my grandmother. A few years ago, she added a bunch of her favorite recipes to it before giving it to me. I loved being reminded of her favorite dishes. My grandmother still makes a number of them for family gatherings like Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.

I also stumbled upon the famous Engagement Chicken recipe!

And a special one from our honeymoon! 😀

I even found a copy of Kath’s husband’s pizza crust recipe. I must have printed it out when I first started reading her blog.

Check out all of the recipes that I threw away! I was very selective about the ones I kept.

Even though I threw away a lot of recipes, the one that I kept are great inspiration for the future. I’m excited to try them soon!

Dinner

For dinner, Mal made us BMTs (Bacon, Mayo & Tomato) sandwiches on toasted whole wheat bread. He had a side of bacon with his! 😉

For dessert, I enjoyed a couple of Sandwich Thins with peanut butter and chocolate + peanut butter chips. As always, they were wonderful.

Now, I’m enjoying a mug of Winter Dream Tea with soy milk.

And the organization projects continue!

I just need to say this again: I can’t believe we’re moving… again.

Enjoy the evening, guys!

  1. But doesn’t it feel to good to go through and get rid of stuff? Just last night I organized “my” side of our closet — it felt so good to have a pile of stuff to donate and to have room to buy new things 🙂 Think of all the new stuff you’ll need for your house!

  2. how about this for a challenge, tina!!..make one recipe per day from your binder every day for a month! (you can wait til after you move to start, haha!). would be fun for us to see your recipes, and you’ll be “forced” to try some of them out!
best wishes with your packing – i agree, it’s quite the job!

  3. Good job on the packing Tina! 🙂 I have a binder just like that full of great recipes that I’ve never made. I should really pull some of them out and get cracking! Have a great night 😀

  4. I have a binder just like that – my summer project was to organize it but it never happened. Perhaps in January – I definitely need to purge!

At least you made some progress on your packing – good luck with the rest of it.

  5. Old recipes absolutely remind me of the past! I have recipes in my recipe box that are from the mother and sister of a guy I started dating almost ten years ago, and it always reminds me of them.

  6. I think every house has a “junk closet” where all the random stuff ends up. At my house growing up, we always called that room the “Oh My Gosh” room. My mom started it because she said whenever anyone went in there they would say “oh my gosh!” because of all the random stuff piled everywhere. We actually still call it that, even when people are over and never understood why people didn’t get it. However, by typing it out…I’m starting to 😉

  7. Since we moved in June, our garage is the junk place! I have a recipe notebook too that has looooots of recipes in it. I need desperately to go through it, but just have faced that project yet. Good luck organizing!

  8. Congratulations on your progress with the organization! Sometimes I am more motivated for Fall cleaning than I am Spring cleaning. Maybe the chill in the air just gives me that nesting feeling and I want to organize. Good luck with the move!

  9. Oooooh! Do not remind me of mess that needs to be cleaned 🙁 Since I became mom, I simply can’t make it, and I was so organized before. Earlier, I had a junk drawer, and now- a whole room!!! Plus, we make a mess of a whole house playing with toys, rattles, blocks, etc. But this is the sweetest mess in the whole world 🙂
Don’t worry, Tina, take it easy and enjoy in your autumn cleaning and the recipes you found. When you try some of them, share it with us 🙂

  10. My recipe binder is like my bible. I got a gift card to B&N one year so I got a really nice one with pockets and dividers and blank pages to hand write stray recipes. The only problem is that the rings are getting to be too small! I regularly clean out the recipes I don’t use but I guess I still keep so many. I love my recipe binder

  11. I organized all my recipies a while ago too. I was also very selective with what I kept. Looking at some of the recipes I had no idea why I would even keep some of them in the first place as the recipe was not at all appetizing. I guess tastes change!

  12. Hehehe. I am part of the “binder cookbook” too! I found this photo album that hold larger 4X6 index cards so I’m thinking of converting soon 😉

  13. LOL! A friend of mine was trying to convince me to make the engagement chicken for my boyfriend. It does look delicious though…

  14. And by “throw away” you meant recycle, right? 😉

I have a million recipes that I have collected that I never get around to trying. But, at least most of them are in a folder in my e-mail! I need to sift through it sometime!

  15. The best moving tip I have is that a few days before you actually move, pack a bag for each person as if you were going out of town/vacation for a couple days. Typically two days worth unless you are moving a greater distance. Besides the usually trip items, pack a couple rolls of toilet paper, bath towels, maybe even a dinner set with plates and utensils. Don’t forget to pack a bag for the pets – food, toys, bedding, bowls, leases, portable kitty box for kitties), etc. They are “going out of town” and away from their home too.

THEN, put these bags in your car and instruct EVERYONE NOT TO MOVE THEM!!!! And I mean EVERYONE. I put mine on the front passenger floorboard and seat if needed in my vehicle. That way YOU know where it is so there isn’t a frantic search of boxes the first night at your new home looking for bathtowels, TP and pet food when you are tired and sick of looking at boxes! Think of the things you would use in a normal day. At first people think I am crazy with this idea, then it hits them. Ah ha!

    Good luck and best wishes!

  16. I have such a love/hate relationship with packing & moving. Something about getting to box everything up, root through it, and then reassemble it all in a new place is FUN for me. But, heavy lifting & copious amounts of cleaning are an unfortunate side effect. Good luck!
