If you’ve been dieting for what seems like forever (and not seeing results), whether it’s for a special event or even just to hit your goal weight, it might be time for a break. Dieting is exhausting, isn’t it? But, how do you take a diet break without piling on the pounds? It might be time to try a reverse diet, but how do you know if you need one? Has your metabolism slowed down?



Reverse dieting is a strategic eating plan designed to gradually increase your daily caloric intake in order to boost metabolism and help your body burn more calories. Reverse dieting helps the body recover from the damage caused by strict diets and has benefits for mental and hormonal health as well. Sometimes called the ‘diet after a diet,’ a reverse diet is a safe way to increase your calories and metabolism without piling on a ton of weight. Crazy as it sounds, when done correctly, a reverse diet can actually fix your metabolism and help you lose fat and gain lean muscle, all while eating more food.

If you think about it, people lose weight all the time. The hard part is actually keeping the weight off. We know how to lose weight, but we never practice how to maintain it, which is why so many people regain the weight they lost, plus more! If you repeat this cycle over and over again, it begins to damage your metabolism, so it becomes harder and harder to lose weight. Being able to transition from dieting to maintenance calories is the key to sustainable weight loss.

Why you should try a reverse diet


Over time, the fewer calories you eat, the more calories the body retains. Why? Because the body thinks it’s starving. And because it thinks it’s starving, it will do any and everything it can to hold on to every morsel of energy it receives. This means eventually the body will stop losing weight because it holds on to each and every calorie as a means to keep your bodily systems functioning. Has your metabolism slowed down?

This involuntary survival response is why so many people who have been dieting for a very long time often say, “I can’t lose weight!” It’s because the metabolism has adapted to chronically low calorie consumption. The only way to continue to lose weight would be to drop calories yet again. However, you run the risk of not eating enough calories to sustain important bodily functions. Chronic under-eating stresses your body, damages your metabolism, and wreaks havoc on your hormones. When this happens, you might even see weight gain.


You’re eating low-calorie, exercising a lot, the results stopped long ago, and you feel like you’re spinning your wheels. What you’re doing now isn’t working for you, and it’s likely sending you even farther away from your goals. I know the idea of eating more is scary, especially if you’ve been dieting for a very long time. But I want you to know that you are not alone and that you can fix your metabolism. Remember metabolic adaptation? If your metabolism can adjust to your low-calorie lifestyle, it most certainly can adjust to one that includes adequate calories and proper nutrition, too.

The choice is yours. I want you to ask yourself, do you want to continue living your life the way you are now? Watching every calorie you eat, saying no to dinner and drinks with friends, worried about missing a session at the gym, or staying on the treadmill an extra half-hour to ‘undo’ a few cookies? Are you happy living this way? Or are you tired, irritable, and feeling defeated because your results do not show the effort you’re putting in?


Imagine eating and exercising without restriction and stress and getting the results you want. Sound crazy? Well, guess what? It is totally possible! This is where a reverse diet can help.
A reverse diet is a long-term investment in your health. If you’re not where you want to be right now, a reverse diet is needed to fix the damage that has been done to your metabolism (and hormones). Putting the time in to do this now is going to allow you to diet in a much healthier and more sustainable manner in the future. It takes time and patience, but if you can look at the big picture, you’ll get there.
