Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Heyyyyyy, friends! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! 🙂

Just wanted to share some photos from the weekend as well as this past week to show you guys what we’ve been up to lately and share some great news!

At a barbecue yesterday afternoon, Qman got a really good look at our friends’ (cold, not-in-use) fire-pit. Haha! Too cute!

Quinn is a natural at Polish Horseshoes. He understood what to do right away, which was quite entertaining to watch while the guys tried to play a game! 😉

Quinn and I spent this morning playing with cousin Matthew and all of his cool toys!

That tongue! <3

Seen on my run: Pug on guard. This sign definitely made me smile!

We had friends over for dinner on Friday night and they brought Strawberry Shortcake. We loved it so much, we brought the same thing to a barbecue the next day and it was a huge hit with everyone!

My new favorite breakfast: Veg + eggs. Last Sunday, I sauteed a bunch of baby spinach, zucchini, and shredded Brussels sprouts in coconut oil and then reheated it during the week before topping it with a couple of fried eggs. So delicious, so nutritious.

I made a Desi Linden shoelace bracelet! Clearly, my middle name is “crafty.”

I’m ramping up my mileage in preparation for a 10-mile race in just a few weeks, and I realized just how much I missed the solo time. There’s nothing better than a long run and a podcast.

It was too hot for pugs last week, so Murphy enjoyed cooling off in Quinn’s pool. Remember the time we put the pug in a cooler?

IMG_9026 (1280x1280)

Speaking of the pug… He’s going to have his first experience with boarding later this week. We’re heading to Seattle on Wednesday, and Mal and I totally dropped the ball on asking our dog sitter to watch Murphy. I really don’t know what happened. It slipped our minds/we assumed the other person got things squared away, so, long story short, our usual dog sitter wasn’t able to watch the pug on such short notice. We eventually decided to board Murphy at his vet’s office, which everyone assures me is going to be just fine. Murphy’s never been boarded before, so I’m a little nervous about how he’ll handle it. His vet is great, but the thought of leaving him there breaks my heart. *sigh* Murphy’s going to be totally fine, right?

Over the weekend, I tried Dreaming Tree Sauvignon Blanc and really liked it. I’m not usually a huge fan of California Sauvignon Blancs (I’m more of a New Zealand gal), but I wanted to see what the Dave Matthew’s wine was all about. This one was fresh and crisp with hints of grapefruit and lime– just how I like my whites!

IMG_9055 (1280x1280)

My aunt makes these adorable chocolate boxes called The Dog Pound, and she gave me one for my birthday, so I just wanted to give her business a little shout-out. The Dog Pound comes with 16 Chocolate Lab medallions and it’s super cute– perfect for the Lab lover in your life!

On Saturday, we did “Zeus” at CrossFit. It was probably one of the hardest workouts I’ve ever done. The combination of exercises kicked my butt and, wow, I am sore today.

I had my blood taken before my Entyvio infusion the other day and things are looking up! Maybe the Entyvio is finally kicking in because my inflammation numbers (i.e. CRP, SED) are some of the lowest they’ve been in YEARS!!! And my platelets are in the normal range, which is a first in a lonnnggggg time! Let’s hope my heath continues to improve!

I am Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certified! Woohoo! I loved the program and can’t wait to put my certification to good use! Exciting news coming SOON!

Questions of the Day

What’s the craziest/coolest thing you’ve ever seen on a run?

What’s your favorite dish to bring to a summer get-together?

P.S. Tomorrow (Tuesday) is Amazon Prime Day!!

  1. Strawberry shortcake is one of my favorite summer desserts. It’s so flavorful without being too heavy.

I once saw a guy driving on the side of the road to walk his dog. His dog was walking on the grass and he was driving next to him in his car with his hazard lights on cause he was going so slow.

I’m excited to hear what your news is!

  2. Congratulations on your bloodwork! I know that news felt great! I hope the Entyvio keeps working for you. I just had blood work done recently to see how I was doing since my surgery and everything was normal! I was so happy I can’t remember the last time my bloodwork was normal!

  3. Aww I would totally dog sit for you! I live in marshfield and my 2 y/o would love having murph around 🙂

Favorite dish to bring is usually home-made guacamole and chips but that strawberry shortcake would be perfect for summer!

  4. Hi! If you’re ever looking for boarding for Murphy, we send our dog to Tail Waggerz in Newton. They don’t use crates, which we love, and they’re always posting pictures on Facebook so you can see how much fun your dog is having. It might be a little out of the way but totally worth it in my opinion!

  5. Yay…..for improved health!!!!

Can you share more about the Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification?

  6. Sounds like you’ve had a great week! Good thing the fire pit was cold. I’m glad the infusion is helping. Congratulations on you’re certification!

I don’t run, but I do go on walks, and my son and I sometimes see a lizard.

I’ve never been to a summer get-together, so I don’t have a favorite dish to bring.

  7. My favourite dish to bring to a get together is various fruit trays – I just buy fresh fruit at Costco, cut it myself and mix and match. It encourages me to eat a ‘little’ better when I go to a bbq / get together!

Also, Zeus looks INTENSE! I’m going to write it down for a WOD to complete post-pregnancy 🙂

  8. Looks like summer if off to a fun start!
Just an FYI about dog boarding.. you should check out TONS of wonderful people across North America who open their homes and you can contact individuals online depending on your needs. Insurance is involved as well so no need to worry.

  9. The craziest thing I’ve seen on a run? On the Stevens Creek Trail near Shoreline Park in Silicon Valley, a guy running on the path with his goat on a leash!

  10. My favorite dish to bring to summer get togethers is a Greek yogurt and Nutella dip for fruits. People LOVE it, and it’s seriously just those two ingredients (sometimes I add a dash of cinnamon if I’m feeling spicy). My friends are weirdos though and have nicknamed it “doo doo butter”and ask for it frequently. How appetizing….

  11. Favorite thing to a BBQ is is coleslaw made with Ramen noddles crunched up and the flavor packet mixed with oil and vinegar with sugar for a sweet and sour taste. So light compared to the mayo based coleslaw.

  12. Ugh I totally know what you mean on the doggie mom guilt!!! Have you heard of Rover? It’s amazing! It’s sort of like Uber but for pet sitting 🙂 You can see/read reviews of all of the pet sitters which is a gamechanger!

  13. So many fun ideas and great weekend treats (+veggie breakfast for the win)! We boarded our Ridgeback at a place nearby that has a farm and I swear I heard her say just give me five more minutes mom! She loved it all the extra attention and time with other puppy’s! Don’t worry murphy will be fine! Congrats on your certification and low inflammation levels!

  14. Hi. I tried going to the URL to buy your aunt’s chocolates-it doesn’t work. (We are Lab lovers, and chocolate lovers for that matter. We have 2 chocolate Labs in fact. Does she have another site where I can purchase?

  15. I saw someone mentioned Rover above, but Dog Vacay is also an awesome option. We are hosts through the site and have had some great experiences. 🙂

  16. I am so jealous of all the cookouts ! I would love to have one, but it’s just too dang hot in Georgia right now for a fire anywhere in sight! But that strawberry shortcake sounds so good!

  17. Tina — With regards to boarding Murphy, I would echo the other folks who suggested using a doggie daycare type place for boarding. Typically those places let the doggies play together all day and then relax/sleep in a suite (vs. a wire crate) at night. Just a suggestion since I’m not sure the vet would provide as much exercise and personal attention (not to mention the environment might be a bit more scary if Murphy has an aversion to his vet like some dogs do), but of course it’s completely up to you to do what you are most comfortable with! Good luck either way! Dog mom guilt is so real.

  18. If you’re ever looking for dog boarding in the future, I highly recommend JM Pet Resort in Brockton (it’s about 3 min off of exit 17 on 24). My pup has been going for years!

  19. Yay for good health news- that is awesome! I love the little grill marks on his nose, haha!! He must have been perfectly still… they almost look painted on. I love these summer weekends spent outdoors and with BBQs… perfection.

  20. Lovvvvvve dave matthews wine! Awww Murphy will do great being boarded! Think of it like he’s going away for summer camp, or to a spa 😉 that’s what we tell our dog at least, ha! Can’t wait to hear even MORE good news!!

  21. Congrats on the blood work results! Sending positive vibes that things continue in this direction! Cheers to that!

I would totally dog sit for you – we have a fenced in yard and all kinds of doggy stuff and my husband and I work from home 3-4 times a week so Murph wouldn’t be alone too much but we live near Worcester, probably a drive for you guys? I’m sure Murph will be okay!

I always bring peanut butter pie to cookouts – its no bake, inexpensive and easy to make!

p.s. I think I read your blog too much, I dreamnt that I met you last night, and you were so awesome and super friendly (as I imagine you are in real life, haha)

  22. I need to start having more egg and veggie breakfasts because I really love them! I hope your pup does ok this weekend, it’s hard to leave pets behind because you can’t tell them what’s going on.

  23. Wow, so much awesome news! Congrats for everything! I love seeing Quinn (he reminds so much of my twin toddlers who are only a couple months younger than him). Maniac is a wonderful to describe them! Haha!

I’ve been following your blog for years now, but life got in the way and somehow I hadn’t been on Carrots n Cake in a few months. WHY did I wait so looong?! I’ve been playing catch-up today and I missed all of your positivity. Your life is so relatable and makes me feel all light and airy when I read your stuff! You are truly awesome and inspiring. Not to mention a wonderful mother!

  24. Hi Tina, I love you, and your blog, and I’m super excited that you’re feeling better!

I do have one comment–the pop-up that appears whenever I visit the site encouraging people to subscribe can be kind of annoying. I understand that it’s a useful marketing tool, and I’ll keep reading regardless, but it’s not my favorite feature of the site. Pictures of Q-man, however, are the best–keep those coming!

  25. Hi Tina! Hooray for good health news! We board our dog at his vet (a VCA out here in Arizona) regularly and he LOVES it! They have a fenced yard that he is walked in and I like that if anything happens while we are gone his vet (and other trained staff) are right there. I know Murphy will do great! 🙂 Make sure to take his favorite toys and treats (I am convinced that our dog gets more treats when he is boarded than he ever does at home, haha!). Can’t wait to read about the Seattle trip we are going there in October, so I will be taking notes on what all you guys do!

  26. I always bring some sort of salad…depending on my craving at the time…potato, macaroni, but generally it is a broccoli cauliflower salad. Totally unrelated….couple of weeks ago you linked to a Mediterranean chicken recipe you wanted to try….well that recipe REALLY spoke to me….and if you haven’t made it…do! YUMMO! It wasn’t super quick and easy for me because I guess in small town USA jarred olive tampenade isn’t available so I made a batch using Alton Brown’s recipe…which I loved…had anchovy paste on hand (use that in a pizza sauce recipe) so used a squirt of that instead of anchovies. Fresh tomatoes aren’t in season yet here so I used a can of diced tomatoes….used the sauce from the can to pour into the bottom of baking dish – wanted to make sure chicken stayed moist. I used breasts that I butterflied to help cook faster. We all really enjoyed the chicken…so much!

  27. Great news on your lower counts post treatment! I hope they stay that way. It has to be frustrating to keep trying new protocols with not much/any success.

I’m a NZ Sav Blanc lover, too! Might have to check out the Dreaming Tree.

I had a boarding facility tell me to bring a t-shirt with my scent on it when I dropped off my dog – it will be like their security blanket. My dog was a rescue and had grown up in a kennel so she was excited to be at a kennel again and didn’t want to leave when I came to pick her up! I’m sure the vet’s staff will take good care of Murphy. Enjoy your trip!

  28. You will have to come visit NZ one day, (and drink all the wine) as I long time reader, I will definitely put my hand up to be your tour guide. Even better, I have a little guy who is about 4 months younger then Quinn, so he already has a little buddy to play with.
We also have lots of family in Boston, last time I was there, I was pregnant!
Hopefully see you in New Zealand one day 🙂
