The first part of the hurricane just passed through. We’re in the eye of the storm now. Irene stirred things up, but, thankfully, she caused no major damage at our house… yet.
Just a window-blown fence.
A flattened tomato plant.
And a messy backyard.
I’ll take it. I guess we got lucky here in southern Massachusetts.
I know Irene isn’t over yet, but I think the media sort of blew it out of proportion for our area. I was really freaking out about it, but then the hurricane didn’t hit us very hard. Better safe than sorry, right? I would never want to be unprepared during a hurricane. Yikes.
Lunch
This afternoon, I enjoyed a surprisingly delicious lunch. It tasted much better than expected.
A mushy mess of green with a side of cherries!
The mushy mess of green was mashed potatoes with steamed broccoli, Garlic Gold, and avocado mixed in. Who knew those flavors would go together so well?
The meal was also really satisfying. The avocado provided lots of healthy fats, the broccoli was packed with fiber, the potatoes sat like a rock in my stomach, and the cherries offered a little bit of sweetness at the end of the meal. Perfect.
I’m attempting to make lasagna for dinner tonight. It’s sort of crazy that I’ve never made one all by myself before. Wish me luck!

the mush looks mighty delicious to me !
thanks, as always, for the inspiration 🙂
Poor tomato plant! I’m glad the hurricane didn’t come to much.
Hope your lasagne turns out well! 🙂
So glad that Irene did not hit y’all as hard as expected. Hurricane Ike was my first direct experience with a hurricane (we live in Houston) and I would not wish that on anyone! I will never forget being up all night just praying nothing was going to come smashing through our living room windows! Again, glad you guys are ok.
I’m addicted to cherries-they are the perfect sweet to the end of a meal! Glad to hear that the hurricane wasn’t as bad as expected. We got the same thing here in MD…but glad we were prepared just in case!
Your potato and broccoli mash sounds so good- I think it would be a good stuffing for a twice baked potato [mmm, def a comfort meal]!
P.S. Love your blue bowl- my mom loves that shade of blue in the kitchen and has passed that love on to me 😛
I’m from Florida so when the media was saying that Hurricane Irene was going to be one of the worst storms ever for the upper East Coast I had to roll my eyes. Yes it was a huge storm, but I’ve dealt with Category 4 hurricanes down here! I think it was blown out of proportion because it’s so rare that hurricanes hit the Northeast. At least it was only a Category1/2, down here in Florida that would just get us off of school and let us fly a kite because it was a windy day 🙂
Tina – again, I’m so sorry. My thoughts are with you. 🙁
