What I’m Loving Lately 87

Hi, guys! Happy FRIDAY!

What a week. It was definitely one of those “run around like a chicken with its head cut off” kind of weeks. Holy cow, I’m glad it’s behind me now – especially because there are a couple of celebrations this weekend that I’m really looking forward to. My birthday (#37!) is on Monday, so we’re having a little get-together at our house on Saturday and then Sunday is Father’s Day, so we have a lot of fun stuff on the agenda. Basically what I’m trying to say is BRING ON THE WEEKEND! 🙂 But, first, let me tell you about What I’m Loving Lately!

Adding collagen and Natural Calm to my seltzer water – There’s just something about summer that means flavored seltzer water! I drink quite a bit more in the warmer months, so I’ve started to add both collagen and Natural calm for an extra boost of protein and magnesium – plus a little hint of raspberry-lemon flavor.

Celebrating Murphy 8th birthday – Our little puglet is growing up!

How to Train with Intention (from Ben Bergeron’s podcast “Chasing Excellence”) – He talks about the difference between practice, training, and competition, and why you should go into every gym session/class knowing which mode you’re in. I also love this quote from the episode: “The goal is to push off the nursing home as long as possible.” Right on.

Play-Doh 3-in-1 Town Center + plastic “splat” mat – Qman loves Play-Doh, but we don’t love the tiny pieces of it all over the house and stuck in the carpet. So, we pulled out his old highchair “splat” mat to keep his play space clean, and it’s the best thing ever – super easy clean up and now we don’t worry about having Play-Doh everywhere!

Which meal plan is right for you? – If you’re curious about Designed to Fit Nutrition, this blog post is for you! 🙂

Get Out – Oh my gosh, this movie… I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Seriously, my hands were sweating! Haha! It’s a creepy psychological thriller and, whoa, you just need to watch it. Highly recommended.

The myth of self-control – A lot of people think healthy eating is all about will-power and self-control, but it really comes down to (meal) planning/prepping/setting yourself up for success and making consistent habits work for you! I really loved this article and definitely had a few “lightbulb” moments while reading it – just had to share!

Upgrading all of our expired and chemical laden sunblock – Guys, I’m telling ya… this whole Beautycounter thing has been life-changing for me. I can’t stop reading/researching about all of the different chemicals that we put on and into our bodies. It freaks me out! And, of course, this immediately translated to our sweet boy and what his little body is exposed to. Long story short, I got rid of almost all of our sunblock from last summer and purchased a whole bunch from Beautycounter + a few baby/kid products. Now that I know what I know, I can’t help but look at sunscreen (and other beauty products) differently.

New IBD Medication Guide – Just had to share this awesome IBD resource! Patients can now find information on their specific Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis medication with ease by visiting this guide – everything from common side effects and videos that explain how various medications work to help improve symptoms and inflammation.

Tank top of the summer – I know that I already mentioned this tank top, but just had to mention it again because I am obsessed – and some colors are on sale right now! 🙂

Question of the Day

What’s your favorite brand of sunscreen?

When you were a kid, what age did you consider “old?”

I always thought 25 was old, which, looking back, I was so NOT old. Haha!

  1. I LOVED Get Out! It was moving, yet horrifying. A great thriller! I didn’t even know you could put collagen in WATER. Love that idea! My favorite sunscreen is neutrogena ultra sheer– feels like nothing is on you!

  2. We also went through a sunblock purge, and now use Coola, which I love! I thought anything over 25 was old when I was a kid. Ha! Happy birthday! I hope you have a wonderful celebration and weekend.

  3. Thinkbaby is my favorite and top rated by EWG and seems to have the least bad and questionable ingredients of any I’ve researched.

  4. Aw – happy birthday, Murphy!!

When I was younger, I always considered 30 to be old. Well, I’m turning 29 in August so I may need to rethink that one because I definitely don’t feel (that) old, ha!

It’s kind of crazy how many chemicals are in all of the products most of us use without thinking about it – sunscreen and makeup like you mentioned, dish soap, cleaning products, even something as simple as air fresheners we put in the car. I try to be as natural as possible but I could still stand to swap out a bunch of products. A little at a time.

  5. i recently just got some collagen and i can’t wait to try it!! i hadn’t thought about adding it to my water (even though i know it’s flavorless), but i might try adding it to some coffee or a smoothie first!!

and i’m so with you on the willpower thing – i definitely think adopting healthy habits it’s more about being well-prepared! even someone with the strongest willpower would cave if they had a kitchen full of all the things they wanted to eat but were off limits!

  6. GET OUT WAS SO AMAZING, but is it weird that I haven’t stopped craving Froot Loops since? We typically use the sporty 30SPF sunblock, but I just know it’s ridden with chemicals, which makes my skin unhappy and also just plain sucks. What are some of your favorite all natural products? Are they tested on animals? We’re making the switch to cruelty-free products over here!

  7. I’m slowly starting to get rid of products too that have all the bad chemicals in them. Have you been to the website https://gimmethegoodstuff.org? It’s a great reference for products that are good stuff, bad stuff, and sneaky stuff. Tons of great info and the Beautycounter products are all promoted on their site as the good stuff 🙂

  8. Hi Tina, long time reader here.

I was wondering if the tank top ‘shout out’ was sponsored by zappos, or just a great find you came across?
Also with the sunblock, did you purchase this or was it provided as part of a sponsorship deal?

    1. The tank top is one that I purchased (not sponsored), but I did use an affiliate link in my blog post. Influencers are required to disclose if a post (or shout out) is sponsored.

I purchased the sunblock, but received a discount because I’m a consultant and linked to my business page.

  9. I’ve just become more aware of what’s in all the products I’m using as well-scary! I’m obsessed with young living Essential oils and they just developed a sunscreen! I always thought 30 was old when I was a kid. Happy Birthday!

  10. I need to check out that collagen for my husband, he had his meniscus removed in HS, after a couple surgeries from football injuries. They were supposed to “fix” it more permanently, but arthritis set in too fast. He deals with it, but will need something done eventually. What’s the difference between collagen and gelatin? Are they used for different things?
We’ve been using thinkbaby/thinksport this year. I love the stick for my 3yr olds face. My other favorite is Aveeno baby continuous sensitive, and I’ve recently noticed EWG rated the new formula a 1 as well. I’ve been using Juice Beauty tinted moisturizer with spf on my face and it works well.
I thought 50 was old when I was a kid. I remember my grandparents being in their 50s. Now that my parents are there and busy as ever, it doesn’t seem it!
    Have a great birthday weekend!

  11. Have you tried the Beautycounter body wash yet? It is for sure my favorite thing that they make. I can’t stop telling people about it.

  12. I have made my own sunblock, but I’m nervous to put it on my “less olive toned” children, especially since we live in Mexico and the sun is super intense here. I may have to check out the Beautycounter line. I’ve been eyeing up their makeup for awhile now. Do they have a child’s sunscreen?

Also that tank top is super cute on you. I don’t have the chest to pull it off, but I think it’s adorable.

    1. They don’t have a child-specific sunscreen, but they list it with the kids’ products and say it’s great for the whole family. That’s what we bought for Quinn this summer! 🙂

  13. Would you mind sharing which kid/baby products you got for the summer sun products? The link just took me to the main page. Thanks!

  14. For the natural calm do you drink it any time of day? And I saw on the directions you mix it with hot water then can use it. Do you do that? or do you just mix it in your plain seltzer water? Thanks

  15. I beyond love that article about self-control—so interesting and I learned so much! Thank you for sharing!!! Control is something that I have been thinking a lot about and working on recently (letting go of…) 🙂 perfect timing for me to read that–now I feel better about some of the decisions I make and habits I have–it could just be how I am !
