I Talk to Murphy… A Lot

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

Good morning, friends!

The other day, I read a statistic in Real Simple that 94% of pet owners talk to their animals as if they were human.

It’s theorized that we chat with our pets because we believe they hear us better than anyone else does””even if the conversation is one-sided. We sense their regard for our thoughts and feelings, and when we’re alone with them, we’re not as self-conscious to share how we truly feel.

I’m totally on board with this reasoning, and, of course, I fall right into this people-who-talk-to-their-pets-as-if-they-were-human statistic. I work from home, so I talk to Murphy a lot throughout the day. I actually ask him questions quite often””obviously, knowing he’ll never answer them, but, in my head, he replies with his ridiculous pug expressions and body language. For example, when it’s time for dinner:

Me: Murphy, are you hungry? Do you want dinner?

Murphy: [dinner enthusiasm]

Clearly, Murphy and I “get” each other. Haha!

I know I say all sorts of weird things to Murphy and act like he’s a little human creature, but I’m okay with that. He makes me happy, and he’s good company.

He’s also a really good listener.

Health News & Views

I love smoothies and drink them all the time, but, sometimes, they don’t satisfy me as long as I hoped. In the past, I’ve whipped up a delicious smoothie for breakfast or lunch, thinking it would hold me over until the next meal, but it lets me down and leaves me hungry just a couple of hours later. However, with some smoothie-making trial and error, I’ve learned that I need to add a quality mix of carbs, protein, and healthy fats to my smoothies to ensure that they fully satisfy me.

Thanks to a secret ingredient (avocado), here’s a delicious, nutritious, and satisfying smoothie recipe that’s guaranteed to ward off hunger pangs for hours!

Question of the Day

Do you talk to your pet? What do you guys talk about? What weird things do you say to them?

  1. Um that murphy video was so funny, I needed that after this week in NE sports. I am currently petless, but if I did have a pet I sure would!

    Sara 🙂

  2. I read that the other day too and it was good to know. I definitely talk to my dog as if he’s a person. I swear with his head tilt and perk of the ears he knows what I’m saying. He’s my bff

  3. I usually ask our dog how her day was. Did she have fun playing with her friends? Is she the cutest dog in the whole world?

  4. Hahaha my entire family talks to my dog and we make up these weird background stories for her about how she’s a freeloader who stays home all day but never even cleans up around the house and she lied about having a day job at starbucks. (This sounds kind of mean but we really love her I swear)

  5. There’s no better ears to listen! I catch myself asking my dog if he wants to watch a movie with me (as if he would understand the story) I tend to ask him if he finds his food good which gets followed by silence, but somehow it feels like the question was answered, haha.

  6. I have always talked to my dog and now talk to our new puppy just like he is human. I swear my older dog gets it when I explain how the puppy stage will wear off.. it’s like he looks at me and is saying “Promise mommy?!?” My in-laws think I am a nut but I am completely okay with that! They are my babies!

  7. I talk to our dog ALL the time – I’m also home alone with her most of the day, like you, so she’s the only one to talk to 🙂

  8. Ah yes! I always talk to my dog (she’s a vizsla) I always say “oh are you ready for breakfast/dinner”. I always feels like she gets it too, because she goes crazy and runs to her dish. Pets are great listeners especially when it’s a sensitive topic!

  9. I talk to my minpin a lot! Sometimes i stop and ask myself ‘is this weird?’ then i realize i’m talking to myself and it’s probably less weird if i just keep talking to my dog…lol

  10. I think I’m going to try freezing bananas for my smoothies. Do you freeze them with or without the peel? I hope that isn’t a dumb question 🙂

  11. I talk to Disney (my 5 yr old cat) all the time! I just brought home a new kitten today (9 week old Cheshire), and am already having conversations with him as well. Right now the biggest conversations happening in our house is me asking Disney to stop hissing at her little brother lol.

  12. I talk to my dog all the time but my favorite thing is when she comes to me when I’m upset. I don’t have to ask her to, she just knows. And then she’s trying to lay her cute 75 pound self on me to shower me with kisses. Love it!

  13. I love your Murphy posts. I agree with you, a pet and a child are the same in a way, we have unconditional love for both… and the pet especially is so happy to see you once you’re home. I really really want a dog, I’m just scared of how much work it is, but I also can’t work from home every single day. Maybe someday.

  14. I talk to my cats all the time, about everything. I ask them how their day was and ask them if they know they are the cutest, sweetest kitties ever. My favorite is when they reply with a meow, like they really know what I’m talking about.

  15. I lost my two Jack Russells last Sept 🙁 but YES, I talked to them all the time. Not only did I talk to Jack and Russell (yes, that is what their names were!) but, I would answer back and have a conversation with them…in their voices of course. 🙂

  16. We lost our best bud Zip on my birthday last year. My husband and I talked to him constantly his whole life. We actually took popular songs and reworded the lyrics with Zipisms and sang them to him. We have a new dog now along with Zip’s sister Wizard, but we don’t talk to them nearly as much. Thanks for this post. It will remind me to converse more often!
