Hello! Happy Monday! How was your weekend? Mine was really fun, but I was a bad, little blogger and barely took any photos. Oops. Sorry. It happens sometimes, right?
On Friday night, Mal and I went out to dinner to celebrate our friend Mike’s birthday at La Campania in Waltham.
The food was fantastic (holy yum, Hot Chocolate Soufflé!), but the service was just meh. Or maybe our server was having a bad night? I dunno, he just wasn’t very friendly and sort of rude to our table at times. Even still, we had a great time at dinner and the five of us started planning our annual summer party. No pig roast this year””we have something even better up our sleeves!
On Saturday night, our friends Elizabeth and Nick drove down to the South Shore for dinner and game night. We went out to dinner at Lime Leaf (I ordered the Lime Leaf Noodles like I always do) and then we headed back to our house to play some games.
Mal and I love games. (Perhaps a little too much?) We’re are always playing them””pretty much daily””and sometimes we even make up our own games on the spot because we’re weirdos, which are usually the most ridiculous ones. So, when we planned a game night with Elizabeth and Nick, we were all about finding a new, fun game to play with them.
After much debate at Barnes & Noble on Saturday afternoon, Mal and I decided on Hit or Miss.
How to Play
Sharpen your pencils – and your intuition – for this quick playing “think-in-sync” party game. Draw a category card and in 45 seconds, list as many related words that come to mind. When the timer runs out, roll the die – if it lands on HIT, pick a word that you think everyone wrote; if it lands on MISS, pick one that only you wrote. Choose wisely and score big points. The player with the highest score wins. Hit or Miss – the cant MISS game that will turn your next party into a HIT!
For example, one of the category cards was “Things Hawaii is known for,” so most of us wrote down things like “beaches,” “luaus,” “coconuts,” and “LOST,” which would be HITS. Mal wrote down that Hawaii is known for its “Hawaiians,” which was an uncommon answer (and pretty funny), so he used it as a MISS and got three points for it because none of us wrote it down. It’s a really fun game, especially with the random/ridiculous answers!
After playing Hit or Miss for awhile, Mal and I taught Elizabeth and Nick our favorite card game ever: Pitch. Mal and I can play this game for hours and hours and hours and never get sick of it, so we were psyched Elizabeth and Nick wanted to play.
While we played, Murphy made himself comfortable on Elizabeth’s lap… and hand.
He actually made himself very comfortable.
This dog”¦ haha!
Dinner
Speaking of Murphy, he was all about helping with dinner last night. He was right under foot near the action the whole time!
Mal whipped up the Mexican Turkey Burgers while I made the mashed potatoes and cabbage, which was a last-minute addition to dinner. After St. Patrick’s Day, it was super cheap at the grocery, so I picked up a head.
Also, I recently read that cabbage has some possible anti-cancer effects and is helpful with the reduction of colon inflammation. I also weirdly love cabbage.
Mal cooked the turkey burgers on the grill while the pug kept him company.
A little while later, dinner was served: Mexican Turkey Burgers with mashed potatoes and boiled cabbage. I ended up going back for a second serving of mashed potatoes and cabbage. So good!
Question of the Day
Are you a game person? What are your favorite games?
I also really love Scattegories. I’m pretty good at it too!

I lovvveeee Taboo and Apples to Apples, especially with a big group of friends!
@Alyssa @ fit and fun in third: I really don’t get what’s so fun about Apples to Apples. I know a lot of people that love that game though.
Taboo is really fun once you get the hang of it.
I think Cranium is my all time favourite though.
@Samantha Angela: thank you! I hate aples to apples while everyone else in the world thinks that it’s the best game ever. It primarily consists of one person taking 5 minutes debating over what card to choose while everyone else awkwardly waits.
@Alyssa @ fit and fun in third: @Samantha Angela: I’m dying to play Apples to Apple because I hear it’s so fun. I still can’t believe I’ve never played!
@Tina: My family LOVES games!! We invented 2 new ways to use the Apples to Apples cards…both of which I think are more fun than the original. I describe them here: http://www.leadingthegoodlife.net/2012/03/13/my-30th-birthday/
Also “The Game of Things” has become a huge hit with my friends…although it can get quite raunchy depending on who you play with!
I love games too! Never heard of Hit or Miss, but it looks great! One of my all-time favorites is Taboo 🙂
Hit or Miss sounds fun! I am not a big card game fan, but I love games like Apples to Apples, which is my favorite game!
Oh, Scattegories! One of my favs! I love games, but have been told I turn into Monica Gellar sometimes- haha. I’ll work on it! Wits and Wagers is pretty fun, too, as is good ol fashion charades!
@Brittany (Healthy Slice of Life): LOL!
When games are involved, my competitive nature really comes out! I LOVE Taboo & Scattergories. Another favorite is Monopoly Deal (card game version of the board game)!
I love Life! There is something about filling the car up with the blue and pink people! Haha!
The turkey burgers look great! 🙂
I love Taboo! Games are so fun, but I actually don’t get a chance to play them all that often!
I love playing games!! Taboo is definitely a favorite. And Apples to Apples. Ever played the “Battle of the Sexes” game? That game can be hazardous to your relationship … it can get so competitive! 😉
I love game nights!! I always prefer to play games with a group but Neal and I will bust out a few games every once and while. Favorite game is Quelf (at the moment).
I like some games, like card games, but games like that where you have to be fast thinking tend to give me too much anxiety!
I love games! Scrabble is an all time fav…and twister! Cabbage is one of the very few veggies that I sometimes just can’t stomach…being Irish I should be madly in love I know! I ate enough cabbage and bacon as a child to make up for my lack of cabbage love now!
Cranium gets me every time. The humdingers put me in stitches!
I love playing games, especially cards. I’m pretty good at gin rummy!
Also, Murphy’s face is so priceless, what a cute pug 🙂
I love Scrabble! I’m not the best player and don’t come up with any big impressive words but I’ve won a few games using the old standbys. Ox and Zen for the win! 🙂
I like games–Apples to Apples is my favorite!
I am a huge game person, my husband and I love RummiKub
Monopoly is my absolute favourite. Though for party kind of games I love Trivial Pursuit!
I LOVE games too!! Scattegories!
I LOVE games! My favorite is probably farkle (a dice game). The best board/card game I’ve ever played is Boxers or Briefs. It is similar to Apples-to-Apples, but way more fun! And, I think Apples-to-Apples is a lot of fun so that is just a testament to how awesome it is.
This is the game: http://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-44259-Boxers-Or-Briefs/dp/B000BNJIUE. I don’t actually own it and thought it was obsolete, but it looks like it isn’t! I guess I’ll be buying it now 🙂
Scattergories is definitely a top two game for me, but my real favorite is Trivial Pursuit. I always know the random bits of trivia 😉
I’m a big fan of Taboo and Scrabble, but other than that, I’m really not a game person. I’m always the odd man out when it comes to being a game-hater!
I flipping love Murphy. I’ve never been a big pug fan but Murphy has completely changed that!! If you forgot to take pictures the whole weekend and just posted pictures of Murphy doing hilarious things (love his little sprawl sleeping position) I’d be happy!! His little jowl flopping over your friends hand is so cute!
As a child I loved Life and Mouse Trap! I always played Scrabble with my Grandpa so its a favorite still. Monopoly is always fun too, I actually really like games but we rarely play them.
I LOVE games! Have you ever played Loaded Questions? It’s probably my favorite. I also love Apples to Apples, Imagine If, Balderdash, and Scattegories. Pretty much everything other than Monopoly!
When I saw the title I thought you were going to discuss the hunger games… or the crossfit games haha.
Have you looked into eating more fermented veggies for your digestion? I’m a big advocate of sauerkraut for my stomach… getting in the good stuff from not only the cabbage itself but the fermentation process.
Taboo and Scattegories are my two favorites but it sounds like Hit or Miss would be right up my alley as well. And my fiance and I make up games on the spot all the time…nothing like a little competition to spice things up!
I love board games but my husband HATES them. I love Clue, Monopoly… the classics! 😉
Hot Chocolate Souffle??? That. Sounds. Epic.
@Leah @ Chocolate and Wild Air: Oh my gosh, it was! It was basically a super chocolaty, under-cooked brownie with ice cream.
Hit or Miss looks like a lot of fun! I love Catch Phrase and Apples to Apples, as well as, Scattergories.
murphy is so flippin cute! i love games too!! one of my all time favorites is Taboo. it’s great when you have a really fun group of people that get all into it. 🙂
I love playing games but until we bought apples to apples this past winter, we had none! i was psyched to play apples to apples b/c everyone raves about it, but then we read the instructions and were kind of puzzled at how it was going to be funny. After a slow start though, it totally was. Guess everyone knows what they’re talking about 😉 We’ve only played it once though since you really need more than 2 people for it.
I was beginning to think I was the only person who loved “game night.” We like Apples to Apples, Songburst, Scene It and classics like Clue, Sorry, Boggle and such. Of course if you’ve got a non-prudish round of friends with you, Pervartistry is hilarious. It’s a lot more difficult than you might think but so funny, it’s worth the embarrassment!
Settlers of Catan is by far my favorite game. I first played it the night I met my now husband’s parents and have loved it ever since.
It’s never ‘hit or miss’ with you guys– we always have such a blast. 🙂 Murph made an excellent teammate for Pitch. I couldn’t help but read that bit about cabbage and colitis and wonder where they find mice with UC. And now I am completely freaked out. Thanks for a great time this weekend!
We’ve passed this game through 4 generations so far! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spite_and_Malice
I like playing games but rarely play them for whatever reason. We used to play Bunco in our neighborhood but now we just meet for Bunco but never play. No one ever wants to play. 🙁
Love games. Two of our faves right now are Reverse Charades & Funglish. I liked your new game! Love games with words!
You need to slice your cabbage and sautee it in a pan with some chopped onions and garlic. It tastes like the middle of an egg roll. You will NEVER boil cabbage again!
@***ANDREA***: Mmm! Next time, I will definitely try that!
I want to play Hit or Miss so bad! I love Apples to Apples, Taboo and Life (nobody else in my family likes it though). Board games are so much fun!
I LOVE games. Catch phrase is my favorite. We played it a few weekends ago with a big group of people on a Friday night and it was a huge hit! They even have a version for the iPhone so you can play anywhere!
I love Apples to Apples. My new favorite is Telestrations. It’s like telephone with drawing. So much fun!
We’ve been trying to set up a weekly game night with friends, so I’m glad you posted these suggestions! That Pitch game looks a little confusing though. I’ll have to reread the wiki article.
@Kate: It is a little confusing, but it’s so fun!
I love Scattergories, too–have you ever played Scattergories Categories? It’s brand new and looks like a lot of fun since it’s a spin off of the original game!
@Laura @ LauraLikesDesign: I haven’t, but I bet I would love it!
I think my favorite card game is definitely Phase 10. It is ADDICTING.
I love pitch and I haven’t played it forever because no one else knows how to play!
I’m totally a games person. The current favourite is Ticket to Ride, a board game where you build railroads across the United States and try to complete missions. I swear it’s less geeky than it sounds =p
For some reason these Murphy pics are cuter than usual- I’m won’t lie, I’m normally a “big dog” person, but that little bug is growing on me!
My hubby and I used to play “Sorry” all the time but we haven’t busted out the games in a while! Thanks for the reminder!
~Ang
taboo is my all time favoorite couples night game. I also love trivia pursuit, rumikub, uno and gin. my new favorite phone game is drawsome! Have you tried it? It’s so fun!!
I love doing game nights with my friends! We always play Cranium, Pictionary, Taboo, and Headbandz. I’ve never heard of Hit or Miss, but it sounds fun – it would be a good new game to introduce to my friends! 😀
