I (Mostly) Hate Naps

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

I don’t know what’s up with me, but I’m absolutely exhausted today. Maybe it’s the weather or my new workout routine that’s making me extra tired? All I know is that I needed to take a power nap to wake up this afternoon, which says something because I hate naps.

I rarely ever nap because I never wake up feeling better/more awake after one. Most of the time, I feel worse and usually a little bit cranky. I’d rather power through my tiredness with caffeine, fresh air, or exercise than nap. I know some people swear by them, but I’m just not a fan of naps.

This morning, I went into NuVal for a few hours, so I packed a lunch to take with me: half of an Apple Omelet and some baked sweet potato wedges.

Wow, that lunch looks really sad, but I swear it tasted great!

After my time at NuVal, I headed home to get some studying done for NASM. I made myself a snack of sunflower butter, banana slices, and chia seeds on a whole wheat wrap to eat while I studied.

I also made myself a mug of coffee with soy milk.

And then I got to work!

About 20 minutes passed before I started to feel really tired. I ended up eating a couple of cookies thinking more food and/or sugar would help wake me up. No luck.

At this point, I was really struggling to stay awake. I had finished almost my entire mug of coffee, so I figured if I slept for a little while, maybe the caffeine would kick in right before I woke up, so maybe a nap would work in my favor today. Well, it worked because I feel a zillion times better now! Twenty-minute power nap + 8 ounces of coffee = good as new!

What do you think about naps? Love ”˜em or hate ”˜em?

  1. I HATE naps. When my husband and I first started dating, we shared similar schedules (working 7-10am, then 4-8/9). In the middle of almost every day he would nap for an hour or so!! I could NOT jump on board. I hate the groggy dirty feeling of napping…and my mouth always feels like sandpaper after a nap. He does not nap very often anymore but I just don’t think I’ll ever be a fan 🙁

  2. I used to hate naps because I would always wake up feeling worse than I did before until I discovered that short naps are the way to go! I set my alarm for about 20-25 minutes and always wake up feeling so refreshed!

  3. I normally HATE naps too, the way I feel after I wake up is usually 10X worse than I felt when I fell asleep in the first place. I have heard that drinking coffee right before can help you not nap too long/ feel better once you wake up. Sounds like it worked for you!

  4. I wish I liked naps but I don’t. If I can nap – which is rare, I always wake up groggy and more tired. I prefer to lay and read a book or have a bath to relax more.

  5. I definitely used to be that way – not wanting to ever nap. I’m still that way most of the time, but when I’ve really lost sleep and I don’t have anything pressing to get done, I’ll give in and take a nap. Only 20-30 minutes, though. Any longer and I’m sleepy

  6. i’m totally with you! i HATE naps…i always feel groggy and sick after i wake up and it takes me forever to feel normal again. my husband on the other hand can’t get through the day without one! he swears by them and wakes up feeling instantly refreshed and ready to go. i’ve got to admit…i’m jealous!

  7. yum on those cookies!

naps…I used to love them but now, I just wake up grumpy, grouchy, takes me forever to ‘come to’ and then I end up being overly awake about 6 hrs later when i should be winding down…so I just muscle thru the tired’s as best I can and skip naps these days.

  8. Hmm I don’t know if I don’t trust people who don’t take naps. 😉 I love naps! The weather has been pretty cloudy here, so I’ve felt especially tired. It gets worse after lunch! Oh, and being 22 weeks pregnant doesn’t have anything to do with my tiredness. 😉

  9. I now only take naps after having a small cup of coffee (like you did!) That way, I wake up feeling refreshed and re-energized, not like a major grump.

  10. I’m with you — regardless of how tired I am, I usually avoid naps because they make me feel worse. I have heard that drinking coffee before a nap helps you to wake up feeling more alert though! I only take one if I literally cannot stay awake!

  11. It’s probably all the workouts you’ve been doing. But, and I hesitate to say this, have you taken a pregnancy test? Just to rule that out? I’m not trying to scare you, it’s just to rule out that possibility.

  12. I agree with you – I can’t stand naps! I’ve never liked them. Not even in college, when napping was a huge part of life for most people 🙂 I always wake up feeling cranky. If I absolutely have to take a nap, I always “restart” my day afterward. I workout, shower, and eat breakfast just like if it were morning.

  13. I love, love naps. Once, I volunteered at the Harpoon 5 miler (so I was up at 6AM), drank some beer, ate some food, then came home and took a fantastic 3 hour nap and then afterwards ran the best 10 miles of my life.

I love naps. Except when they leave me even more tired. Then, not so much. 🙂

  14. I love naps, I need to take one almost everyday! It must be the Italian in me! LOL
I too love coffee with soymilk, I’ve been adding a drop of peppermint extract to give me that perk in the afternoon when I can’t take a nap! lol

  15. I’ve been doing CF and following a Paleo diet for a little over a year now. For the first few weeks, I was exhausted and often falling asleep/ready for bed by 9 or earlier! I’d definitely attribute your tiredness to your new workout routine. Hang in there and get plenty of rest!

  16. I feel the same way about naps! I hate them and, like you, I feel worse afterward. They make me bleary-eyed and cranky- it’s like my body feels as if it’s been deceived because it’s used to sleeping only at night!

Interestingly, I recently read an article that suggested drinking coffee right before you nap so that the caffiene kicks in around the time you wake up!

  17. I am the exact same way about naps–I ALWAYS feel worse after! I’m crankier, more lethargic, and have that nasty post-nap taste in my mouth. Bleh. I wish I liked naps though…I love the IDEA of naps (curling up randomly & just sleeping mid-day..who doesn’t like sleep?!), but they never work for me.

  18. I think the only time I truly liked to nap was as a kid. As an adult I never purposely try to go to sleep during the day. If I had a lousy nights sleep and I am unable to properly function the next day, I’ll probably end up falling asleep on the couch for a bit. I feel I waste the day away by sleeping through it!

  19. Hate ’em too! Well only for the fact that I am awful at taking naps. Since I can remember I’ve only had like 10 successful naps, I just lie there. I do appreciate their benefit though, just wish they worked better for me!

  20. I cannot believe there are so many nap haters out there! I LOVE napping. I wish we had nap time at work- I swear I’d be a million times more productive if I could take a power nap in the afternoon!

  21. Naps are hard for me… sometimes when I really want/need the nap I can’t fall asleep or, like you, I do fall asleep but don’t wake up feeling refreshed or relaxed which is totally disappointing. I remember one day where I had a bad headache and just needed to rest. I wanted to do this over my lunch hour but sleep just wasn’t my friend. Though I did feel much better after having laid there for 20 minutes.

  22. Sometimes I like them and sometimes I hate them. Not sure why. Lately, when I’ve woken from naps I feel completely lost, disoriented, feeling weird. Sometimes I feel tired after lunch, but really, its mostly because of a carb overload than anything and I never sleep well then. I dunno! This is finals time too so my schedule is totally out of whack and I’m drinking a ton of coffee so I’m just a ball of nerves.

  23. I can never just lay down in bed and take a nap. I have to be exhausted mentally and physically. And I have found if the room is warm its easier to fall asleep.

I love love love cold sweet potatoes. even more than warm. They are sweeter when cold IMO. And the apple omelet look interesting. I never would have thought of that. I bet an omelet with some caramelized bananas would be excellent as well.

  24. I can’t do naps either – I wake up feeling awful. I so admire those who can catnap!

By the way….dark chocolate-butterscotch-pistachio cookies??? Recipe, please?

  25. I also agree… I mostly hate naps… well put… the 10 minute nap in the car when you get somewhere super early is always welcome.. especially when the sun is shining in the car… Also… on my sundays in the morning after I get up and rummage around for a bit.. i like to sometimes go back to sleep for another 30 minutes or so… other than that.. i would rather just not sit down until the day is done! 🙂

  26. No offense to anyone, but even the thought of a nap makes me feel lazy…plus, who has time to nap during the week?? Come the weekend, I certainly do not want to waste time sleeping. I like your coffee/exercise plan MUCH more.

  27. Whether I try to do a short nap or a long one, I feel awful afterwards. Just doesn’t seem to work for me! My body can’t handle caffeine, otherwise I would totally try your idea!

  28. You got it right with your nap! “Experts” say to drink some coffee before a quick power nap and 30 minutes later when you wake, the caffeine will give you a kick start, but we don’t need to tell you that since you just figured it out on your own!

  29. I love the idea of a power nap, but i am terrible at napping. If I’m exhausted, especially after a long weekend run or if I got up early to do something (also probably on the weekend) I’ll take a nap….but my husband and I have a terrible habit of turning the 30 minute alarm off and sleeping for 2 or 3+ hours! That is a great way to kill an afternoon 🙂
As a kid, I refused to nap, so maybe that’s why my nap skills are lacking!

  30. Hate naps. Like you said earlier, I never feel better. Normally I don’t even feel like I napped, just that I laid there. Glad it worked for you though.

  31. I love naps! I don’t take them often, but sometimes the Saturday or Sunday afternoon nap is so awesome.

Then there’s the “disco nap” for when you’ve been up early for biking or CF or yoga and you are going out late that night, you take a little disco nap so you can stay out later at the disco.
