Last night, while looking for my checkbook in the office, I stumbled upon this old photo of me:

I bet you didn’t know… I lived in a trailer in Kentucky for the first few years of my life.

We were so poor, I didn’t even have a crib. According to my mom, I slept in a dresser drawer. After living in Kentucky, my family moved to Italy and then to Massachusetts, where we lived on a dairy farm until I was 12-years-old.

I bet you didn’t know… I won a car.

Back in 2004, I filled out a paper entry form at a concert, put it in the little cardboard box, and my entry was picked! People really do win cars!

I won a brand new Toyota Scion Xa. At the time, I took the T to work and lived in Brookline (where parking is VERY expensive), so I ended up selling it.

I bet you didn’t know… I met Dave Matthews and he offered me one of his chicken wings.

I was so star-struck, I politely declined his offer. But, wouldn’t that have been a really good story if I had eaten it!? I ended up getting his autograph though! 😀

Breakfast

Breakfast was really fun this morning! Mal and I did a Grilled Banana Sandwich tastetest: canola oil versus butter.

IMG_0022.JPG

The other day, we were out of butter, so I made a Grilled Banana Sandwich using canola oil. It came out really well, but I was curious how butter would taste. So, this morning, I cooked one of each: a Grilled Banana Sandwich made with canola oil and a Grilled Banana Sandwich made with butter.

For the canola oil sandwich, I followed this recipe. For the butter sandwich, I melted 2 tablespoons of butter in the microwave and mixed it with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Then, I followed the same directions for the Grilled Banana Sandwich with canola oil.

Verdict: the Grilled Banana Sandwich made with canola oil ROCKED!!!

I’m not going to lie, I was pretty surprised. Butter always seems to make things taste better, but the canola oil caramelized and made the bread much more crispy than the butter. Mal liked the canola oil sandwich more too, but both were very yummy. Holy delicious!

I also enjoyed a delicious caramel iced coffee with breakfast.

The caramel syrup mixed right into my iced coffee, and with a little vanilla soy milk, it provided just the right amount of sweetness. My iced coffee was definitely a treat this morning! 😉

The caramel syrup is part of the Le Caramel 3-pack Bundle that I talked about in my lunch post yesterday.

  1. Taste tests are fun…and surprising results! I definitely would’ve guessed that the butter would come out on top. That was a great way to start the day!

  2. Great post! Those are some interesting things you’ve done!
Something about me is that I wanted to be an opera singer when I started college. I majored in music for a semester and then switched to Sociology.
I also met Barack Obama and saw him at an event with Oprah when they came to NH!

  3. what a cute post! I bet it makes you appreciate all the fun trips you get from blogging! Bet ya didn’t know that I was voted most likely to be a comedienne in high school AND was the salutatorian!! BOO YA!! Oh..but I can’t spell…for the life of me.

  4. That IS surprising– I totally would have thought that butter would win!

Lol, my cousins slept in a chest of drawers for the first year of his life down in New Orleans because his parents couldn’t afford a crib…and he still doesn’t let them forget it!

…..that I studied Ancient Greek at University 🙂

Great post. I love love love that picture of you as a toddler =!

  7. OMG! I would die if I met Dave Matthews! I normally am not star crazy or anything like that, but I saw them very up close at a concert once and it was amazing! I was really poor growing up too. I never had jeans that fit my long legs, and I got teased a lot for the goodwill clothes that I would wear to school. Kids are so mean! I wouldn’t change any of it because it made me a much stronger person, you know?

  8. Aww, that picture of you is adorable! I didn’t know those things about you… this is really great post!

I bet you didn’t know… that half a year ago I was 20 pounds heavier.
I bet you didn’t know… that I lost it due to an eating disorder.
I bet you didn’t know… how much you’ve helped me in recovery.

I also bet you didn’t know… that I’m salivating over that grilled banana sandwich right now. Oh wait, but maybe you do? 😉

    Wei-Wei

  9. I was born and raised in Kentucky! Have lived in Boston the past 4 years but my family still lives just outside of Louisville, and I love going home for visits. I bet you didnt know, I am getting ready to have my 8th knee surgery (I’m only 26), but I still love playing soccer, running (ran my first half-marathon last year!), and am thinking about getting into cycling.

  10. Thanks so much for sharing these things about yourself. It takes guts to put this stuff online for everyone to see.

I wish I’d win something like a car! I have the worst luck in random drawings. I’d never won ANYTHING until last year!

  11. i would have definitely guessed that the butter would have won – crazy!!

i bet you didn’t know…that I have my black belt in karate!
i bet you didn’t know…that I performed in a broadway touring show with Blanche from the Golden Girls
    i bet you didn’t know…that I was a tomboy growing up

    this is fun!

  12. Wow, Kentucky to Italy sounds like a big jump.

Bet you didn’t know…I’ve been sky diving twice–and counting
Bet you didn’t know…Taye Diggs told me I was pretty. I blushed bigtime.
Bet you didn’t know…I got married on my mother’s birthday. (Yes, we had a cake.)

  13. Ahah awesome!
Winning a car… that’s the first time I “know” someone who really did win the car at those things :p
Also, you’ve come a long way, be proud. 😉
That sandwich looks sooooo good. Omg. This has to be my breakfast at some point this week! 😀

  14. That sandwich looks soooo tasty! I must try one soon. hmmm, lets see what I can come up with

I bet you didn’t know…I dress famous actors for my job (confidentiality, yikes!)
I bet you didn’t know…I have met Bill Clinton and Hillary twice
I bet you didn’t know…I played with Martha Stewart’s pups at a BBQ when younger (I didn’t care about her yet!)

  15. Great idea to do a side-by-side taste test. I’m surprised that the butter version didn’t come out on top taste-wise, but hey… canola oil is healthier so that’s a good thing! I absolutely love the banana sandwich at Mike & Patty’s, so I will definitely by trying your version :).

  16. I read your blog every day, but I never really caught this– so you use the vanilla soyMILK instead of the soy creamer. I’ve tried the soy creamer and just didn’t really like it. I’m thinking I may have to try the soy milk instead because CoffeeMate fat free creamer is just not cutting it for me!! And I’m definitely making those banana sandwiches soon 🙂 Yum!

  17. I bet you didn’t know that when I was a kid I had 3 front teeth! I had one surgically removed when I was 4.
I bet you also didn’t know that I sucked my thumb until I was about 14, yet never needed braces (actually, the orthodontist thinks that me sucking my thumb actually helped the gap between my remaining two front teeth come together, how ’bout that?!)

  18. Bummer the VinoVoyage is on a weeknight… little too late for me on a work night with the hour drive into the city. Oh well…

Fun post though! That is awesome about the car, too bad you had to sell it BUT I’m sure it was nice to get the $$.
Um…. Jimmy Buffett’s lead guitar player sang & played at our wedding.

  19. Mmmm grilled banana sammies. I bet the canola oil one was better! May have to try that one of these days, bananas get a bad wrap for all the “*evil carbs*” but there are soooo many health benefits to them

I bet you didn’t know I once got hit by a car crossing a street in Australia!

  20. Haha, yes! People do really win cars! My dad won his, actually, around 2005 I think.
What dairy farm did you live on in MA?

I bet you didn’t know my elementary school was so small it had about 40 kids and my graduating class was me and 3 girls

  21. You won a CAR!!! That is absolutely amazing. My faith in this crazy world is restored : )

I bet you didn´t know that in seventh grade, I made up a song about my Sacramento-area top 40 station to the tune of Tearin Up My Heart by N Sync and sang it on the air during prime time (I have a horrible voice) to win two floor seats to the N Sync concert. I didn´t make JT fall in love with me like I hoped, but at least I sacrificed all pride and dignity to be there : )

I bet you didn´t know that… I live in a bamboo hut in an African village (no exaggeration) but I never miss one of your blog posts! Your readership is worldwide : )

  22. Tina, I bet you didn’t know you have a faithful follower from deep in the heart of Italy… I have never posted comments on your blog (I never do it on any blog, anyway), but I was intrigued by your Italian stay… Where, exactly? I’m from Perugia, Umbria.
You’re great, and I just adore your photograph skills (and your lovely dog, too)

  23. wow, those “bet you didn’t knows” of your life are pretty awesome! the one that i use all the time is “i bet you didn’t know my eyeliner is actually tattooed on.” it’s pretty amazing and i would highly recommend anyone who wears eyeliner consistently get it done 😉

  24. I would have loved to meet Dave Matthews!!

I bet you didn’t know…I was also one of those people who won something in a draw. I got to go on a week cruise to the Bahamas! I put in my name for the draw at a half marathon expo.

That’s all I’ve got right now, if I come up with more I might make a post of it! You are very inspiring! Thanks!

  25. i’ve made almost the same sandwich except w/ honey instead of brown sugar. It’s amazing! i think i will give yours a try!

  26. I love reading little bits and pieces of your past; it’s fun! It sounds like your mother has done an amazing job during some tough times, and she must be so proud of you two!
Hmm. . . a lot of ppl don’t know I used to be the biggest Deadhead/Phish head and went to concerts all the time/hitchhiked/camped/walked around barefoot! I was a total hippie while at UMass until I studied abroad and started loving shopping and clothes! There is still a little bit. . . ok a lot of that free spirit still in me though!

  27. It’s actually pretty weird when you start to hear things about people you didn’t know happened. The Dave Matthews thing is pretty neat! My early years were pretty poor too. It was just me, my sister and my mom. Winning the car…that is awesome! My only claim to fame though is Rosario Dawson (Men in Black 2) came to dinner at my house because my husband illustrated a comic book that she co wrote. The sad thing is, most people don’t even know who she is. I am still waiting for my big “betcha didn’t know” moment!
