I Bet You Didn’t Know VII

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

Good morning! Happy Tuesday!

I brought back an oldie but goodie for breakfast this morning: French Toast Breakfast Scramble! Remember this one? It’s been awhile, huh?

Well, it was so delicious, I ate two servings of it. Mal bought a bunch of small bananas this week, so after I cooked and ate my first batch, I went back for a second serving. I highly recommend big bananas for this recipe. They just work better and add a delicious sweetness to the meal. Mmm! I missed this breakfast!

It’s been awhile since I wrote a “I Bet You Didn’t Know” post, so here’s another one to add to the collection!

I bet you didn’t know”¦

I can’t decide how I feel about our first dance song at our wedding. Obviously, Mal and I wanted a special song for our first dance, but we took the “special” thing a little too far. We ended up picking a wonderful song by a local singer-song writer that, at the time, we really loved, but nowadays we never hear it on the radio or at weddings, so we never have that aww, this was our first dance song moment. Our music tastes have also changed quite a bit over the years, so we don’t listen to the artist’s music much anymore. Sometimes I wish we picked another song, but sometimes I don’t.

When I’m laying in bed with my mind racing like crazy, and I can’t fall asleep, I think about pink elephants. Focusing on pink elephants (cartoon ones like the image below) and not allowing my brain to think about anything else calms my mind, so I’m able to fall asleep. If something else sneaks in””a worry, another To Do list item””I immediately shift my thoughts to pink elephants. I know it sounds weird, but it works every time!

Hurt people hurt people. This quote has really changed my thinking about unnecessary negativity and cruelty in the world. I dunno. Maybe it just helps me understand the motivation behind it better. I used to get mad and upset by terrible things that I experienced (I still don’t think it’s right), but now I have a little bit of empathy for people who intentionally hurt others.

I know every single word to Extreme’s “More Than Words” and it’s one of my favorite songs to sing. When I hear it, I always belt it out like a total goober.

I’d never get another dog while we have Murphy. Over the years, Mal and I have talked about getting Murphy a buddy, but now that we’ve had him for 4.5 years, I don’t think we could. The new dog would always be the “other dog,” and I’m not sure how much Murphy would like it. He loves having ALL of our attention.

CrossFit FAQ Video with Sarah Fit

Here is the second CrossFit video that I made with Sarah. Again, Murphy makes a couple of cameos, and I’m weird and awkward.

Questions of the Day

What song do you know all of the words to?

If you’re married, what’s your first dance song?

What do you do when you can’t sleep?

P.S. If you are thinking about signing up for Cook Smarts, you can save $5 off their quarterly or annual subscriptions with discount code CNC1013. (The code expires on 11/4.)

  1. Oooo!!! I love that song! lol Name a U2 song and I probably know all the words. But one of my favorites by them is Wild Horses.

Alfie and I are getting married in May and are going to dance to a song that Harry Connick, Jr. remade – Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off.

The title sounds terrible! But it’s so us – “You say tomatoe, I say tom-ah-toe”,etc. etc.

  2. That’s funny “our song” is More Than Words (which is for some reason much maligned nowadays. Too much airplay back in the day? *shrug*) but our wedding song is…wait for it…by The Cure. It’s a B side called Halo and came from the only happy album The Cure ever produced called Wish. If you had told me I would dance to The Cure at my wedding I would’ve laughed in your face but the song is so beautiful, we couldn’t not dance to it! (If you’re bored and want to see the lyrics/hear the song, the link is here: http://youtu.be/jZ_B5cTXSNo)

  3. My husband and I struggle with getting a second dog. Our current dog, Bubby, has been an “only child” for 2.5 years. Double the cost of everything has kept us from getting a second dog but I agree that I don’t think Bubby would like sharing attention…he already gets jealous when I hold babies because I talk to them the same way I talk to Bubby, LOL

    1. @Christine: we got a 2nd dog when our first dog was 3. I love them both sooo much, but I wouldnt do it again. Everything changes-costs, attention, dogs habits…….

    2. @Tara: @Christine: We got a second dog after we’d had our first for about 2 years and she still hasn’t forgiven us. Ha! While I absolutely adore both dogs and can’t imagine life without both of them, it’s been really challenging and they don’t exactly adore each other. Ours were both adult rescues, so that definitely added to the challenge, but the experience would definitely make us think twice before adding a second dog to the family again.

      Plus….holy dog hair!!

  4. I know all the words to really weird songs, like Baby got Back.. haha and Mambo Number Five.. Why I know those words, I’m not so sure! My wedding dance song was When You Say Nothing At All. I love it, and hear it a lot, so i think we picked a good one! I typically have no problem falling asleep, but when I do, I just try to stop thinking. If I focus on one little thing, or have an empty mind, I can fall asleep just fine. Oh, and if I look at Pinterest on my phone it makes me really tired, lol.

  5. Our first dance was to “Amazed” by Lonestar–it was a special song to us during our dating, and I do like the song! It is a bit cheesy, but isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?! hah.

that quote is a good way to put it–hurt people hurt people. SO true. Sad, but true. ANd you’re right, it does help to create a bit of empathy & understanding!

      1. @Tina: I recently babysat a friend’s pug and he LOVED our cats too! The cats were not as excited, believe me. I swear they were like “WTF IS that thing?!?!?!”

  6. Our first dance song was “Forever” by Kiss. We still love Kiss, but I sometimes wish we’d picked another song. I’m going to have to try that pink elephants thing 🙂

  7. I started singing “More Than Words” as soon as I read this. Our wedding song was “Somewhere over the rainbow” by Israel KamakawiwoÊ»ole. My husband surprised me by having the lead singer of the band sing it with a guitar. Originally it was just going to be a recording. I still tear up when I hear it.

  8. Your post made me giggle because I wanted our first dance at our wedding to be to “More Than Words”!! 🙂 Tim found it on some VH1 list of worst songs ever written (totally wrong) or something like that and refused. We settled on “Harvest Moon” by Niel Young (which was perfect) but every time I hear “More Than Words” I can’t help but think of what might have been… 😉

  9. Our first dance song was from “V to Vendetta.” We didn’t really have a song so I let my husband pick. I never hear it on radio stations or at weddings either but at least we don’t get tired of the song!

  10. My husband and I just got married in July and were planning on dancing to “True Believers” by Darius Rucker. While we were practicing our first dance in the kitchen a couple weeks before, we realized slow dancing just wasn’t our thing. We are known to be the couple that is always dancing and being wild on the dance floor, so we decided last minute to make a change. Our first dance started off with about 20 seconds of “My Heart will Go On” by Celine Dion, and then we busted out with “Bulletproof” by La Roux! This song was a huge hit when we first started dating and we always had mini dance offs to it, so it still had meaning. 🙂

  11. our first dance song was “Why Don’t You and I” by Chad Kroger/Santana. A little bit unconventional, but we love the words, and it was “our song” in our college days when we met. It was fun to dance to because it was fun and upbeat.

Also, you are not awkward in your interview! You are so cute and did a great job!

  12. My song is “No Diggity”. No idea why or how, but I know every word. Oh, and Poker Face by Lady Gaga.

My husband and I got married in May and our first song was “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perry. We had picked it and loved it, then the last Twilight movie came out and it’s all over that movie. We debated picking something else, but when all was said and done we still absolutely loved it, and the teenage vampire love couldn’t shake us.

  13. Our first dance was “Grow Old with You” from The Wedding Singer! It was short and sweet, plus got a few laughs 🙂

We have 2 dogs but got them at the same time. They were severly neglected (rescues from a Puppy Mill), so it has really helped them to have a buddy.

  14. I know all the words to all the songs….sometimes the radio just plays the wrong words while I sing the right ones! 😉
Our first dance song was “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts.

  15. Our first dance song was “The Way You Look Tonight” by Fred Astaire. I wanted something classic that we wouldn’t be sick of years from now. It’s just popular enough where we don’t hear it a lot, but every once in a while so we get that “aww! moment.

  16. Our first dance song was “Walking After You” by Foo Fighters (my favorite band). It never got radio play, but it has always been a very special song for us. The message of it is basically “we are in this together forever,” and I really liked that message for starting a marriage. I still cry every time I hear it.

  17. I love your dress, btw! Our wedding song was “If I ain’t got you” by Alicia Keys. I loved it then and just think it’s okay now. I wish I had went with something different at the time because the song is long and became a little too drawn out at one point. I chose it for the words though, that are still very true to us. How did you get on the pink elephant kick? I’d like to know, as my mind likes to race as well! 🙂

If I can’t sleep, I read. that does the trick 98% of the time!

  18. Our first dance at our wedding was to “This Year’s Love” by David Gray. We love his music and that it’s not super mainstream.

  19. When I can’t sleep I try to count backward from a really high number like 300, by 3s. It’s hard enough to make you focus on that alone, but mindless enough that I can always drift off. I don’t remember where I read that trick but it works for me! Last night the boyfriend couldn’t fall asleep so I suggested that trick (when he so kindly woke me up to tell me). He replied “That sounds hard,” and went downstairs to watch TV. Whatever works!

  20. Pretty sure i remember your wedding song being by Tim Blane! I remember you saying that a long time ago, and i was excited because I’m a big fan! I’m a little disappointed you didn’t give him a shout out!!

  21. I’ve never tried thinking of pink elephants before but if that really works for you, maybe I’ll give it a try! Our first dance song is hardly ever played on the radio. My husband really liked it and he won that one and it is still really sweet!

  22. What?! I’ve watched both of the CrossFit demo videos and you are not weird or awkward at all! Actually, I think you would be a great workout video instructor!

When I get married, I would love to have DMB’s “You and Me” as our first dance song – it might be hard to slow dance to, but I think it’s such a sweet song 🙂

  23. We just got our dog a couple of months ago and I’ve brought up getting a second one for him…but i think he prefers to be the only one who gets all of the attention! It would probably be more selfish of us to get another one than for our dog right now ya know what I mean??

  24. My husband and I just got married on Sept 1st! Our wedding song was This is the First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes. It’s perfect for us but we’re pretty sure we’ll never hear it at another wedding 🙁 It does come on the radio every once in a while and it gives me the biggest smile!

    ps- Murph is adorable!

  25. Our first dance was to an Otis Redding song called Thats How Strong My Love Is. I thought it was a popular song, but I have not heard it sicne our wedding! 🙁 I love the song though!

  26. I know all the words to “More Than Words” as well. Such a classic song!

When I can’t sleep and my mind is racing, I often pick a random number and subtract by an odd number until I get to one (137 subtract 9 until get to 0).

  27. Our first dance song was Michael Buble’s “You and I.” I loved it at the time, and we never really danced to begin with, but looking back it didn’t flow with the rest of our reception at all. Oh well, still a sweet song 🙂

  28. I love when you admit that you went ahead and had “seconds” or a second breakfast in the morning because I’ve adapted to having a lot of the amazing breakfasts that you have concocted and posted on the blog but they don’t usually fill me up! I find myself starving within a few hours and then I just feel like my body is a 13 year old boy machine which it definitely isn’t because the usual exercise I get these days is studying and fidgeting in my chair in a coffee shop 🙂 haha but anyways, seconds rule and so do all of your breakfasts! You look so happy and healthy and I’m hoping the best for your health right now with UC! In one of my dietetic classes, we have been studying digestive disorders and I am completely understood of how difficult it is to deal with and you are such an inspiration. “Carpe diem”-ing everyday to the fullest 🙂
p.s. one of my “GO THE HELL TO SLEEP” quirks is counting backwards from 300… i guess it just bores the mind to death but it really does help. I’ll try the pink elephant before my o-chem test on Thursday because I’ll be tossing and turning. Thanks for the new tip!

  29. Our first dance was to “Faithfully” by Journey. We actually saw them in concert a little over a year ago, so that was a fun experience.

I keep a pad of paper and pencil in my nightstand drawer so I can get all those thoughts out on paper. That way I don’t have to worry about forgetting something and can just relax.

We adopted Ruthie in April when she was 12 weeks old. We wanted to get another dog since Pete (9 years) was aging and alone. Sure, as a puppy she drives him nuts, but overall they get along great. She thinks he hung the moon and he enjoys having a friend. They play so much together he lost 5 lbs in 6 months – I really hope she helps add some years (with the gray hair ;))onto his life!
