Hump Day Happenings

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

Good morning! Happy Thursday, friends!

I haven’t done a day-in-the-life post for quite awhile now””you know, with my meals and snacks and all that jazz. I actually kind of miss writing them sometimes, so I thought it was time for one. With that said, here’s a peek into my Wednesday!

My morning started with my new favorite breakfast: applesauce mixed with Paleo “granola” and fresh blueberries. It’s the easiest and quickest breakfast to throw together (seriously, like 2 minutes), and it’s so delicious. (I also drank a glass of Everyday Green Juice with breakfast, but I never snapped a photo.)

I always used to think applesauce was the most useless food. I mean, it tastes okay and all, but it doesn’t do anything for my hunger. I could honestly eat an entire jar in one sitting and probably still be hungry.

Randomly, a couple of weeks ago, I had a major craving for applesauce while shopping at Whole Foods. I bought a jar, and I’ve been on a serious applesauce kick ever since. Now I always make sure to mix it with a more substantial food(s), such as almond butter, coconut butter, banana slices, shredded coconut, canned pumpkin, or a combination of ingredients, so it fills me up and satisfies me.

After breakfast, I got dressed in my workout gear, took Murphy for a walk, and then headed to CrossFit for a workout. G.I. Jane was on the agenda:

Benchmark WOD
“GI Jane”
For time:
100 Burpee Pull-ups

I hadn’t done G.I. Jane since February 2012 when I first started CrossFit, so I wanted to see how I would do. It actually took me almost 2 minutes longer to finish this time, but I did the workout Rx instead of using a box to jump up to the bar for the pull-ups. I finished in 12:59.

After G.I. Jane, I was a mess””covered in chalk, sweat, and dirt (from the black mats on the floor of our box). And, of course, I went to run errands immediately after that. I wonder what people think when they see me? Haha!

First, I stopped by Marshalls for some storage bins. I had an urge the other night to organize our pantry, so that project is on the agenda for this weekend.

Then, I stopped by the dog shop to buy Murphy more food.

When I got home, I planned to snap a photo of the pug with the bag of his food for Instagram since he’s so obsessed with it, but when I went to take the photo, the little sneak tried to lick his food. Murphy knows better and wouldn’t try to eat it with me standing right there, but he definitely tested the waters! I thought it was so funny seeing his little tongue in this picture. Haha! Clearly, he knows how to take advantage of the situation!

A little while later, Mal’s family came over for lunch. We’ve raved about the new Whole Foods near our house so much, they suggested going there to check it out and grab lunch. Obviously, I was totally on board with this plan!

We all did our own thing at Whole Foods and then we took our lunches back to our house to eat outside on our back porch while we caught up.

Lunch concluded with a couple of pieces of salted almond dark chocolate. Mmm!

After a few hours, we all said goodbye and then I immediately hopped in the car to drive north to visit my nephew, Matthew.

How adorable is his little face?! And doesn’t he look so much bigger? My brother-in-law told me Matthew is “crushing bottles lately.” Haha!

Matthew is being baptized in a few weeks, and my sister and brother-in-law asked me to be his godmother, so I joined them for a session at their church last night. One of the parish priests helped us become familiar with the commitments and responsibilities required of raising a child in the Catholic church. His message was really great: lead by example.

When I got home, I reheated some leftovers from the previous night’s dinner: seared sea scallops with roasted veggies and coleslaw. Delish!

I finished off the night with a few handfuls of trail mix while watching Big Brother. Anyone else into that show? A couple of our friends turned us onto it, so now Mal and I are the biggest fans. We never miss an episode!

  1. I really enjoy your day in a life posts. As other readers have said, it’s great motivation to eat healthy and get some yummy ideas of what to eat. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I like a day in the life post every once in a while, haha I think as humans we’re always naturally curious about other people’s lives. And I LOVE a good lunch or dinner from the WF Salad Bar. One of my favorite little things in life.

  3. Is your sister not breast feeding? I’m always so surprised that with all the research people still choose not to breast feed. That being said, I also understand some women have issues

    1. @Jane:

Really? What business is this of yours? And why even make the comment if you’re going to acknowledge some women’s struggles in the next breath? You are the reason mommy shaming is so rampant these days.

    2. @Jane:Seriously? Mind your own business. You don’t even “know” Tina, let alone her sister. And why do you care? Get a life.

  4. Yes my husband and I have been watching Big Brother for years – we are totally hooked too. I REALLY do like your day-in-the-life posts and YES, I do love applesauce. My son (7 1/2) loves applesauce but the flavored kind, so I will put it in the blender with fresh mango or other fruits……its super yummy!!!

  5. I LOVE the day in the life posts! It gives me good ideas on different things to eat. I am such a routine person and I get board easy (especially with office lunches) so they help me out a lot. AND my boyfriend watches Big Brother and hasn’t been able to hook me yet… 🙂

    Sara 🙂

  6. Omg, Matthew is so adorable!! That little coy smile is so cute!

I enjoy day-in-the-life posts. They give some nice ideas for meals. I can’t even remember the last time I had applesauce. Maybe when I was a kid? lol.

  7. I love day in the life posts! Especially those with adorable nephew pictures :).

I really like your spin on applesauce too. I’ll have to experiment with applesauce mix-ins to make it taste better. Yours just looks fabulous.

  8. I just bought the same storage bins for my closet! Got em in grey at HomeGoods! I love applesauce but never think to eat it unless I’m having a grilled cheese..ha. Such a perfect combo!

  9. I love Big Brother! Not so much this season, there’s hardly anyone left I’d like to see win, but I’ll probably still keep watching.

I eat applesauce with mini chocolate chips and cinnamon as a dessert. Yum.

  10. Yes, I enjoy the day in the life posts. You’re honest about what you do, how you eat and it gives us a connection with you.

GI Jane is one tough cookie. I’ve only done it once, Rx, but didn’t finish. I ripped badly on both hands at 65. Tried to tape up, but the tape ripped off at 75. I called it quits in tears. :'( Good for you for finishing with such a great time!

  11. I have been planning on a BIC band purchase for awhile now, so this would be great! I love the chevron and sparkle bands.

  12. I still love day in the life posts! Fun for some inspiration when I’m in a bit of a food rutt, or when I need a healthy snack idea. I know you’ve got those covered! 🙂

  13. I love Big Brother and absolutely cannot wait for the live eviction show tonight – I’m such a dork! And with the new twist with the jury member coming back in… it’s gonna be good 🙂

  14. If this is a rude or invasive question, please feel free not to answer, but I was wondering if you thought your red meat, fat, and alcohol consumption has any effect on your colitis flares. I’m by no means insinuating that I think your diet is too high in any of those foods/macronutrients, but in my Medical Nutrition Therapy unit about gastrointestinal diseases (I’m a dietetics student), all three of those foods, among others, were listed as ones to avoid if you have ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, colorectal cancer, etc. As I said, I am still a student so I have a lot to learn about the medical nutrition therapy for those diseases, but I just thought I would ask, perhaps just to learn more about those diseases if nothing else 🙂

    1. Both of my doctors said it’s fine to eat red meat and fat in moderation. One doctor actually encourages the consumption of healthy fats since they are anti-inflammatory. I’m also borderline anemic, so red meat is a great way to get iron in my diet.

As for alcohol, both doctors say to avoid it. Although, my GI doctor at MGH said it’s fine to have a glass of wine every now and then.

It’s also important to note that I only show a very small percentage of what I actually eat on a regular basis on CNC. It’s not like ALL I eat is red meat and fat while drinking tons of alcohol.

      1. @Tina: Thanks for answering – what I’ve learned so far is limited to my textbooks and powerpoints….no “real world” education in the sense that I don’t know how practicing doctors handle these conditions in a wide variety of people. And trust me, I didn’t assume your diet was all red meat, fat, and alcohol! 🙂 After all, I’ve been reading your blog for 3+ years!

  15. -I like day in the life posts!
-I’ve never watched Big Brother even once.
-There’s always a jar of applesauce in our fridge (the organic, unsweetened from Trader Joe’s!) and I eat spoonfuls of it : )

  16. Murphy is so funny! My dog is horrible about stealing food. He’s big enough that he can reach the counters, and smart enough that he’s sneaky. One time he stole half a loaf of bread one slice at a time!

  17. Big Brother is the best! I’m addicted this summer. I even read some of the blogs to get the inside scoop.

  18. Your nephew/godson is adorable!! We baptized my godson last year in the Greek Orthodox Church and the priest was one of the best people I’ve ever met! I was raised in the GOC but I don’t go anymore, and the priest was so cool about it. I ended up staying for a half an hour to talk to him about life after everyone left. But anyway, I love the day in the life posts! It’s really fun to see what other bloggers are up to. My favorite way to eat applesauce is topped with a mountain of fresh blueberries and drizzled with some raw agave nectar. I pop it in the microwave and eat it warm. Almost like a blueberry pie 🙂

  19. Your blog title freaked me out….made me think it was Wednesday and not Thursday! I about dropped my lunch container!
Big Brother is my {not so} secret love during the summer! This season is really frustrating for me…definitely not the best, but it’s been interesting enough for me to stick around.

  20. I actually really like day-in-the-life posts! I’m sure after awhile they’d get boring if you didn’t switch it up a bit, but I guess I just really like looking at pictures of food haha. Speaking of that….that chocolate! I love salt and sweets! Soo good!

  21. ha, when I read this post about the applesauce I had to laugh. The morning radio station in our town was talking about apple sauce today and one of the hosts said that when he eats applesauce, he pretends he’s an old man with no teeth and tucks his lip in while he’s eating.
So when you mentioned applesauce I automatically pictured you doing this.
Oh I must be tired because I’m find the silliest things amusing tonight 😉

  22. My husband and I just moved across from a Whole Foods & it is dangerous!! Love that place waaayy too much and recently discovered their breakfast bar options….just stay away! Have you had the dark chocolate salted caramels though? If not, hunt them down! Worth every penny & calorie I promise. So decedant even I can have just one. Okay, two.

  23. I really do like Day in the Life posts.
I do not watch Big Brother. Now if you wanna talk “So you think you can dance”, I’m your girl 🙂
    I only like chunky applesauce.

P.S.- Is Murphy like that with all dog foods, or does her is it just that Taste of the Wild brand? I have to add treats to my dog’s food to get her to eat it. (And yes, she might be a tad bit spoiled).

  24. I also really love and miss your ‘day in the life’ posts. I’ve gotten a lot of ideas for meals from you and miss seeing the kind of thing you’re eating every day-it prompts me to think about what I’m eating and how I can make things easier for myself in terms of non-traditional food combinations and how I could be eating more healthfully. Thanks Tina!

  25. I totally watch Big Brother! I cannot stand Amanda, but I guess if the other houseguests are going to allow her to bully them and they can’t think for themselves, then she’s playing a really good game. Sheesh! I have no idea who will win…I just wish someone would stand up to her!

  26. Big Brother is my favorite, I didn’t know you were a fan! Who are you rooting for this season? I am liking Amanda and Mccrae!

  27. The scallops with salad and coleslaw looks delicious. I will try to emulate that recipe when I get home from vacation. Looks like an easy, light dinner dish.
