Life has been kind of insane lately. Obviously with Murphy’s recent health issues, but we’ve also been busy for other (good great) reasons. (Sorry to be vague, but I’ll fill you guys in as soon I can!) I’m sure you can relate when life gets crazy, it’s kind of tough to stick with your healthy habits. Sure, when you have plenty of time, it’s easy to fit in workouts and prepare healthy meals and snacks. But, when you’re strapped for time, it’s a totally different story, right? Mal and I definitely fell off the wagon for a couple of weeks there, but we regrouped and got ourselves back on track. Here’s how we did it!

How We Stay Healthy When Life Gets Crazy

Make workouts a priority

Yea, yea”¦ you’ve heard it all before, but I promise if you make them a priority and have a plan of attack, they will happen. Mal and I sit down every Sunday night and plan when we will work out for THAT particular upcoming week. In the past, we tried a set schedule, but with everything going on, one of us would always end up missing more workouts that we’d like. There were weeks that we only worked out once or twice, and we’re definitely the type of people who are much happier when we can break a sweat on a regular basis. Long story short, we worked together to figure out the best schedule for the both of us with the current week’s events/obligations/responsibilities in mind.

Work out efficiently

Neither of us have time for long workouts anymore””an hour a day is the most we’ll devote to exercise (with the exception an occasional long run). Since we know our time (and childcare) is limited, Mal and I make the most of our sweat sessions with high-intensity workouts, such as CrossFit/KFIT/Mountain Athletics, stroller workouts, and track workouts, which give us the most bang for our buck. Here are some of our favorites: CrossFit-style workouts, stroller workouts, and treadmili workouts. Most of these are 30 minutes or less, so there’s never an excuse to skip a workout.

Cook/throw together healthy meals Sunday though Thursday

When life gets crazy, healthy eating is one of the first things to go for us. It’s so much easier to get take-out or eat cereal for dinner, but we always feel kind of blah afterward, especially if we’re eating this way for multiple days in a row. Meal planning works for us, but I knew we still might struggle with preparing healthy meals, so I shopped at Trader Joe’s and bought a number of simple, easy-to-prepare meal starters and ingredients, including canned chunk chicken, canned tuna, shredded Brussels sprouts, chicken sausage, guacamole, frozen mixed veggies, eggs, ground turkey, spinach tortellini, and frozen waffles. That way, our meals can quite literally be thrown together in a matter of minutes. I only plan meals from Sunday to Thursday because I know we end up going out to eat or just winging it on the weekends. If we stick to our healthy eating during the week, I’m more than happy!

Set up for snacking success

Eating healthy when you’re pressed for time is sometimes difficult, but it’s not impossible as long as you have quick and healthy options on hand, so I make sure our kitchen is stocked with nutritious and satisfying snacks. Some of our favorites: guacamole + rice crackers or cucumber slices, banana with peanut butter, Greek yogurt + cereal, protein smoothies with chocolate Green Superfood, Perfect Food/Quest Bars, No-Bake Mini Vanilla Almond Coconut Bars (I made another batch yesterday), CVS Gold Emblem Abound Sweet & Nutty Probiotic Trail Mix (I love the yogurt-covered dried apricots), CVS Gold Emblem Milk Chocolate Covered Cashews (so insanely good – I eat the whole bag in like 24 hours), and CVS Gold Emblem Abound Organic Dried Figs. As long as I have something quick and tasty in my kitchen, I am good to go when I need a healthy snack!

Incorporate health into our social lives

Mal and I are lucky that we have friends who love fitness and food as much as we do, so we often plan get-togethers around workouts, long runs, trips to the park, hikes, road races, and more. Of course, doing these things with friends makes them a lot more fun, but they also make being healthy with a busy schedule so much easier. It’s the best of both worlds!

Take a minute to count our blessings

When life is busy, it’s easy to have tunnel vision and miss the little things in life. We’ve definitely fallen into that trap in the past, but now we really try to focus on the positive and count our blessings, especially when things get crazy or difficult. It really puts things into perspective and helps us better deal with the craziness.
