After eating lots and lots of indulgent food over the past few days, I was more than happy to pack myself a homemade lunch today. I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to chopping veggies for a salad so much! 😉

Lunch

Today’s lunch included a salad with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, BBQ-flavored KooLoos, and a drizzle of Cabernet vinegar. Simple yet satisfying.

I also had a Siggi’s Orange & Ginger yogurt (my fav!) and an orange.

And I threw in a package of dried apricots for a sweet treat at the end of the meal. I liked this lunch a lot.

I’ve been running for about 18 months now, and Boston will be my first marathon. When I first started running, I struggled to go a mile without stopping. I would approach an intersection and pray for the light to change so I’d be “forced” to stop and wait to cross the street! I started training because my sister invited me to run a 5k with her in September of 2008, and though each training run was hard, I’d finish each run absolutely elated and ridiculously proud of myself. When you first start out, everything is an accomplishment, and you should celebrate that! I ran my first 5k without stopping, and I was so proud. I knew I could do better though, and things took off from there.

My sister ran the Boston Marathon in 2009 to raise money for the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at MGH. She had lost a close friend to CF, and the Peds clinic can make such a different in the quality of life for CF patients. Unfortunately, my sister is injured this year, and cannot run Boston. I have taken on the fundraising and am thrilled to be able to contribute to such a wonderful charity. I ran my last long run of 22 miles the other weekend, and when I finished, all I could think was “I’ve done everything I could.” I put in the time and the training and all the work for this marathon, and I cannot wait to run Boston! The race feels like a celebration to me. I’m still a few hundred dollars away from my fundraising goal, so during my taper, my energies are all going in to fundraising! I can’t wait for Marathon Monday!

I am running the 2010 Boston Marathon in order to raise money for the American Liver Foundation in honor of my cousin Laura Linehan. I decided to keep a blog about the experience as insurance for my friends and family to keep an eye on their investment.

Laura was born with Tyrosinemia, a rare disorder that prevents the body from breaking down an amino acid, which then builds to dangerous levels. By the time she was 2, she had a new liver, only to learn a decade later that a blood transfusion during transplant surgery had infected her with hepatitis C. Requiring a second new liver, she moved from Melrose to Jacksonville, Fla., where she had a better chance of a transplant. A match was found, but days too late. When doctors began operating, they found she would not survive transplant surgery, and she died April 4, 2008. She was only 20 years old.

Massachusetts has the lowest rates of organ donation in the country. Unacceptable! Many people are in situations just like Laura’s, and the simple act of donating an organ will save their lives. For more information http://www.donatelife.net/ is a wonderful resource! April is Organ Donor Awareness Month – please take a moment to become an organ donor.

My name is Patricia Dizon and in just a few days, I will be running my first Boston Marathon! This will be my second marathon with my first being the 2007 Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco, which is where I’m from. The Nike Women’s Marathon was my first race ever – I don’t know what I was thinking! But after that race, I was hooked on running! Through running, not only did I enter into a wonderful new community and family, but I also discovered a new passion for health and fitness. Since then, I’ve run numerous other races, from 5Ks to half-marathons to 200-mile adventure relays like Reach the Beach and the Green Mountain Relay. Running has really made it easy for me to find a community when I moved to Boston.

This year, I am running the Boston Marathon as a member of the Tufts President’s Marathon Challenge. As a team, we have committed to raise $500,00 for research in nutrition and adolescent obesity at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. As an avid runner, foodie, and fitness nut, I thought this was the perfect cause for me to devote my time to. I have made it a personal goal to raise $2500. I am so excited and I hope you will read about my experience on my blog, Run Foodie Run. Check out the video I made from the Mardi Gras Half-Marathon in New Orleans this past February: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10vLGPm3pEU. Happy running!

My afternoon definitely includes some form of exercise. I’m really antsy to get moving again! Maybe Murphy will go for a run with me! 😉

Happy Hump Day! 😎
