Hello, 2012

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

My first day of 2012 involved family, football, and champagne. Not a bad way to start of the year, right?

My in-laws came over just before the kick-off of the Patriots game. They brought a bottle of champagne to celebrate the new year, so we cracked it open and toasted to 2012. All of us had a pretty tough 2011, so we were really happy to ring in 2012 together.

After being away from home for a week, the food situation in our kitchen was really pathetic, but I still managed to come up with some snacks to munch on during the game.

Pistachios, garlic hummus, and Everything Pretzel Crisps did the trick.

Our CrossFit was closed today because of the holiday, so Mal and I did our own Workout of the Day (WOD) in our basement like we did last week.

10 rounds for time:

  • 10 Push-ups
  • 10 Sit-ups
  • 10 Mountain Climbers (10 each leg, 20 total)
  • 10 Air Squats

We both thought the last WOD that we did at home was a little too easy, so we added in some Mountain Climbers, which ended up being a killer ab combo with the Sit-ups. I finished, huffing and puffing, in 12:54. I’m fairly certain my abs will be sore tomorrow.

For dinner, I had a big salad topped with a Dr. Praeger’s veggie burger. While it cooked in the toaster oven, I made my salad and snacked on a bunch of carrots.

In the mix: romaine, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, Lime Leaf noodles, walnuts, feta, balsamic vinegar, and truffle oil. The truffle oil was easily the highlight of this evening’s dinner. Holy amazing.

Instead of pouring the truffle oil over my salad, I used an oil mister to evenly and lightly spritz it, which saved me calories and fat and didn’t waste any of my beloved (and super expensive) truffle oil.

After dinner, I finished off the last three chocolates from our Advent calendar for dessert. Mmm!

P.S. Calling all bakers! Amanda from Tales from a Kitchen Misfit is running the 2012 Boston Marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Her goal is to raise $4,000, so she’s hosting a bake sale on her blog. If you would like to participate by baking something for it, head over to this link for more info.

  1. LOVE game day snacks! Glad you started the year well. I was at a Patriots game a few weeks ago, and I just drooled over Tom Brady the whole time 🙂 If he ever tires of Gisele, I hope he knows I’d be happy to have him!

  2. Nice WOD, I was watching crossfit games all day on espn yet I didn’t even get off the couch to do pushups haha. I’m sure tomorrows WOD will be tough enough for 2 days though.

  3. My lunches lately have included a salad topped with some cooked veggies and a veggie burger- love the hot and cold combo 🙂

I’ve tried a few different veggie burger brand, but never Dr. Praeger’s veggie burger. I’ve heard mixed reviews about his burgers- some really like them, while others say they have an odd texture… Your thoughts?

  4. Your WOD sounds great. I’m thinking that my husband and I will have to try this out together! We’ve both been running quite a bit, but our treadmill needs a tune-up, so that would give me an excuse to cross-train!
Question for you, Tina–when you were having major stomach illness issues, did you get tested for gluten sensitivity/Celiac disease? I have discovered I might be gluten sensitive, and am debating if I want to go through the process of blood tests/a biopsy… I so do not want to give up the bread altogether, but… Just curious what your experience was.

    1. @Tiffany: Yea, I was tested for Celiac disease, but the results came back negative. The only thing that really upsets my stomach (since that whole Colitis thing) is if I drink a lot of beer, which is very sad.

  5. I like your idea for using a touch of truffle oil as salad dressing. Not something I could use everyday, but it would be perfect for a dinner party!

  6. I think many people (myself included) had some struggles in 2011. 2012 feels so fresh and the start of many good things…I hope you have a great year!

  7. Thanks for the WOD idea! I’ve never done Crossfit, but I’m unable to use my regular workout gear (including the treadmill) today, so this sounds like the perfect workout to try in my living room 🙂

  8. I did your WOD at the gym today after running a hard 3 miles. On my short drive home from the gym, I was in a slight panic because I was worried I was going to get sick from such a hard sweat sesh! Although feeling like vomitting after a workout isn’t very enjoyable, it leaves you with out a doubt that you got in a good work out!

Thanks for sharing your WOD, I look forward to following more of them!

(I think part of my sickness feeling was because I was past ready for lunch, I require lots of fuel!)

  9. That WOD is hardcore. I don’t think I’ve done a “real” sit-up in AGES. I couldn’t even get through 10 reps, which is kind of crazy since I’m training for a marathon. I’m definitely going to keep this up. Thanks for the new routine!
