It was tough getting out of bed this morning. The weather was cool and crisp outside, but my bed was nice and warm– and oh, so comfy!
Murphy felt the same way about waking up this morning.
But, it was Mal’s first day back at school, so we forced ourselves out of bed and got moving.
I made my hubby breakfast while he got ready for school. We chatted and ate together while watching Murphy play in the living room. He had a ton of energy then!
In the mix:
Serves 2
- 1 cup dry oats
- 1/2 cup non-fat milk
- 1 cup water
- 1 banana
- Nature’s Path Agave Granola
- Almond butter
We also had iced coffee with chocolate soy milk. Delish!
Check out the pug tail in the background! š
Kelly Clarkson Rocks My World!
Seriously! She’s awesome! š
Kelly Clarkson makes great music, but I never really thought of her as a role model… until I read her interview in Self’s September issue. This girl has got her head screwed on right! I was pretty blown away about what she had to say about her body, her life, and her happiness. I love her attitude, especially in regard to her weight and body image!
Here are a few things that really impressed and inspired me:
- About what she eats: “Whatever I’m craving, I go for it. As long as you’re not eating the whole damn cake, have a piece! When you get so strict [about your diet], that’s when you screw up.“
- About her happy weight: “My happy weight changes. Sometimes I eat more; sometimes I play more.Ā When people talk about my weight, I’m like ‘You seem to have a problem with it; I don’t. I’m fine!’“
- About self-confidence: “Self-confidence comes from not focusing on yourself. When you’re focused on your nose being too big, your eyes being too deep-set or your hair being too red, that’s when you start freaking out and believing the things other people say. Anyway, who care what they say about you? They’ll not even remember you in five minutes.“

Who is your healthy body image role model?

I read that article on vacay last week and loved it! She was so real! My favorite actress for similar outlooks on body image is Kate Winslet. She defies all those typical Hollywood body image labels. Love that!
What do you think about the controversy that SELF photoshoped the cover image of Kelly?
I use you and other healthy food bloggers as my role model. You all now how to live life and enjoy it and stay healthy at the same time.
I’m sorry, but after that photoshop of Kelly Clarkson, I will never buy SELF again. Absurd. What she says in the magizine is great and all, but she totally defended their decision to photoshop 40lbs off her frame. Unreal.
My body image role models are a couple of my yoga teachers. For a long time, I had only ever been taught yoga by people who were clearly naturally very small boned and thin. At my new studio, there are teachers with a variety of body shapes and sizes. They are all very fit and healthy and strong, but they aren’t all tiny. One of my favorite teachers is a former dancer who has very fleshy, womanly hips. Another is very slim, but carries some of her weight in her arms, like I do. They inspire me to feel confident in my own shape and not compare myself to anyone else.
i just read that article yesterday at the gym! it was a great article and she seems to have a healthy attitude towards body image. what do you think about the whole photoshop thing?? that picture honestly doesnt look like any of the “real” pics of kelly. its like self has the problem with her body, not her….
I agree, Kelly Clarkson is a great role model.
My personal role model is Dara Torres. Amazing!
Too funny. I just read that article last night while eating dinner and was formulating a post in my head. š
Hey!! I made your tofu pizza last night and it was fab! Thank you for the recipe!! Your pug is soooo cute š

As a body image role model, I really admire Beyoncee. She is so gorgeous but not super thin. She looks healthy and beautiful! I think she shows a lot of confidence without feeling like she needs to look like a twig.
@Lauren: Good one!
Jillian Michaels is my healthy body role model. I work out to her DVD’s almost every day and she makes believe that I CAN do it.
I agree with many of the other ladies who are upset with Self for photoshopping her so much. I wonder how SHE felt when she saw the end result.
I think I first heard about the Kelly Clarkson thing while … at the gym, running on a treadmilll. I love her healthy attitude — kind of reminds me of Jamie Lee Curtis. Remember a few years ago, when she posed in her underwear and had the magazine run the photo — UNtouched, instead of touched up? That was great! I try to have a good image, but having put on a good 1/3 of the 30 pounds I lost 4 years ago, I confess I’m struggling. I’m back at Weight Watchers, because I need to feel healthy again. I do confess I do NOT equate my worth with my weight, though — though sometimes it’s a struggle. Take a look at this great book on how you can love your body no matter what it looks like. She’s got a 5-step process, that includes coming up with your intention of what you’re going to do, identifying and getting away from negative thoughts, discovering who you really area, befriending your body and finding your purpose. We ALL need to get over negative body image! Kelly Clarkson is helping lead the way.
I love Kelly Clarkson too!
hmmmmm i would say my healthy body image role models are definitely jennifer lopez, beyonce, fergie, and marissa miller. all of these ladies work HARD to look good and they freely admit that. i work my butt off too so its refreshing to see people who are not “naturally” skinny saying, “we want to look good so we work hard”. instead of people who say “i have good genes” ok because i have “bad genes” i have a big butt? GREAT thats nice! lol
i was upset they photoshopped kelly clarksons photo.. what kind of message are they sending the readers by saying “we wanted her to look her best” is her best skinny? or is it the way she was in the magazine when she says she has no problem being “bigger”- such crap! im glad i dont subscribe to self anymore!
My healthy role model is definitely my Mom. She has been through more crap in her life than anyone I’ve ever heard of and she still keeps a positive attitude and continues to work hard no matter what.
I just read that Kelly clarkson article and fell in love! What a positive voice for healthy body image! I also adore Scarlett Johnason, Beyonce, and Katy Perry — they are the epitome of beautiful and healthy women!
AWESOME post.
way to go š Thanks
I adore Katy Perry, Hilary Duff, Scarlett Johanson š
Okay… seriously… Murphy is the cutest pug I have ever seen. How can so much cuteness be packed into one little pug?! š
I am always amazed by the energy of puppies in the morning! Santana will go from completely 100% asleep to full tilt high-energy play mode in half a second…it blows my mind! But it definitely puts a smile on my face on an early weekday morning š
ooh – is mal returning for grad school?
and kelly clarkson is the sweetest thing ever!
does murphy sleep with you guys?
@Lynn (The Actors Diet): Nope.
@Pearl: No, he already has his Master’s. He’s a high school teacher.
I also really admire Beyonce Knowles, and also QUEEN LATIFAH! They are both healthy, fit, and are comfortable in their skin… not changing their bodies to be more Hollywood rail thin.
Your friends have fiesta ware!!! I love it. š
I like Kelly Clarkson, but was sad when she was airbrushed. š
I agree, Kelly Clarkson has a great outlook on body image. I really admire Sheryl Crow’s attitude toward health as well.
Nice blog. Kelly Clarkson seems very comfortable with her body image. I’m currently reading a book called Love Your Body, Love Your Life by author Sarah Maria. The theme of the book is helping people learn to create bodies and lives that they love. It’s very inspirational just like Kelly Clarkson! http://www.breakfreebeauty.com/notify.php
