Halloween Fail + Wine Tasting Win

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

Good morning and happy, happy, HAPPY Monday to you! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Anything fun and exciting to report?

Our weekend was really nice. Halloween was kind of a bust, but Saturday was a lot of fun and Sunday was productive, so we had a good balance of everything that makes up a lovely weekend.

So… Halloween. It’s not a favorite holiday in the Haupert household. Obviously, I love the candy and the costumes, but Mal can take ’em or leave ’em and, as you might remember, Murphy does NOT like Halloween. At all.

When the trick-or-treaters arrived at our house on Friday evening, we put Murphy outside on the back porch. We didn’t want him barking or jumping on the kids, so we basically banished him to the backyard. Murphy doesn’t like to miss a thing, so, not surprisingly, he didn’t enjoy being away from the action and proceeded to bark, scratch at the door, and freak (the f) out for the next 3 hours. Poor pug. We felt terrible for the little guy, but we really didn’t have any other options. *Sigh* Halloween is still Murphy’s least favorite holiday.

On the costume front, Mal and I were pretty pumped about Quinn’s homemade Halloween costume.

We dressed him up as a scuba diver, but he wasn’t nearly as enthusiastic as we were. It was his bedtime, so Quinn lasted about 5 minutes before he got upset, so we changed him into his PJs and put him to bed.

So, yea, it wasn’t our best Halloween, but the remainder of the weekend was better!

On Saturday afternoon, Mal and I joined some friends at Westport Rivers Winery for a wine tasting.

Mal and I visited this winery a few times in the past and always had a wonderful time, so we were especially excited to spend the afternoon tasting wines with our friends.

Questions of the Day

How was your Halloween?

How’d you spend your Saturday afternoon?

Wine or beer?

  1. For the second year in a row Halloween was pretty lame. Last year I was leaving the next day for NY for the marathon so it was the last thing on my mind and this year we were camping all weekend so I was busy with that. I think we got a total of 6 kids and still have an abundance of candy. We had one cat who wanted to meet all the kids and a second cat who was hiding beneath the bed.
I would’ve said wine several years ago, but now, beer. Totally beer.

  2. … I feel like the older I get the less excited I am about Halloween. Having a kid may bring back some excitement … until then, whomp whomp. Very excited for Thanksgiving though!

  3. Not a big fan of Halloween either. Got dressed up this year, but the COLD was the biggest buzzkill. I’d take beer AND wine at home over a costume party any day. 😉

  4. The scuba outfit is hysterical! Most babies don’t last in their Halloween costumes, just long enough to snap a photo.
I handed out fangs to trick or treaters and they seemed to love them. I wanted to stay away from giving out GMO candy. We had to keep our dog on a leash so she wouldn’t jump on all the trick or treating kids. Watched tons of Homeland episodes too, great show!

  5. Just wanted to thank you for sharing the real-life stuff. I bet it was a bummer that you weren’t able to enjoy a little cozy family time with your little scuba diver… but that photo of Mal and Q will probably be your fave when you remember Q’s first Halloween. 🙂

  6. Aw! Your little guy was still such a cutie in his costume!
We spent our Saturday celebrating my little guys 2nd birthday. So so sweet!
Definitely wine. I love beer but it bloats me.

  7. Our dog is the same way. Ask your vet for some sedatives to keep on hand for occasions like that. It doesn’t knock them out, just takes the edge off.

  8. Very creative costume idea! Love the pictures, haha! I don’t have kids (and I live in an apartment where no kids knock on my door), so my Halloweens are pretty low key. BUT, I do enjoy dressing up my dog! He was a sad, grumpy little dragon for a few hours – adorable!

Wine or Beer? Depends on the occasion or event. I might say red wine is my overall winner, though.

  9. Love Quinn’s costume, how clever! Hopefully he’ll enjoy Halloween more next year 🙂

We had a family dinner and then I trekked around the neighborhood with my 10 year old daughter (a green crayon) and pulled my 2 year old (a pink crayon) in our wagon. My husband manned the door and gave out candy. Lots of fun!

Wine and beer, depends on my mood. Westport Vineyards is lovely, we did a wine tasting and tour there a few years ago with our college friends just before Christmas. They were so nice and everyone enjoyed it, looks like you did too!
