Halloween Candy Poll

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

I can’t believe Halloween is tomorrow. I hope we’re ready for the trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood. Last year, they wiped us clean in just a couple of hours, so Mal and I are ready with tons of candy this year. And I bought all our favorites just in case we have leftovers!

Yesterday’s lunch was a bunch of leftovers from the previous night’s dinner: coconut-almond flour-crusted cod with roasted asparagus and steamed spinach. I chopped up the asparagus and mixed it all together this time. Quick, delicious, satisfying.

A little while later, I whipped up a thick, creamy, sweet, and satisfying Pumpkin Pie Protein Smoothie. It totally hit the spot. In the mix:

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

After drinking my smoothie, I did my Monday time trial for the Plank Challenge. I’ve been using the stopwatch on my iPhone to time myself, so I’ll distract myself by playing with Twitter and Instagram while I am planking. It definitely helps make the time go by faster. I managed 3:33 yesterday, which is a whole minute increase from last week! Woohoo! How’s the Plank Challenge going for you?

Hurricane Sandy never got too bad where we live, so Mal and I decided to go to CrossFit yesterday afternoon.

I thought only crazy people like Mal and me would venture out during a hurricane to do CrossFit, but there was a FULL class last night. I can’t believe so many people showed up!

Last night’s WOD was a special birthday workout for one of our members.

For this workout, you started with 2 Hang Power Cleans and then 2 Burpees onto a 45-pound plate (we just jumped on it). Then, you did 4 reps of each exercise and then 6 reps and so on for 12 minutes. I used 75 pounds for the Hang Power Cleans and started out pretty strong with unbroken reps until I hit 12 reps, which I broke into two sets of 6. At 14 reps, I broke the Hang Power Cleans into two sets of 5 and one set of 4. (The Burpees were no problem. I did them all unbroken.) When I got to the 16 Hang Power Cleans, I basically died and put the bar down a bunch of times and only did sets of 2-3 reps. My forearms were on fire! I just couldn’t hold the bar anymore. I finished with a score of 14 + 12.

When we got home from CrossFit, I threw dinner in the oven, which was Engagement Chicken. I prepped everything ahead of time, so all I had to do was put the bird in the oven when I got home.

Since I was turning on the oven to cook a chicken, I also roasted a spaghetti squash and butternut squash for meals later this week. Two birds, one sword stone.

CHICKEN!?! Murphy‘s favorite!

IMG_4954 (563x750)

The Engagement Chicken turned out great (I swear, it’s the easiest, most delicious roast chicken recipe out there), and I made Mustardy Swiss Chard and Butternut Squash to go with it. Mmm”¦ delicious dinner!

For dessert, I baked some “Halloween Treats” sugar cookies. I don’t know how these ended up in our refrigerator, but they did.

IMG_4913 (750x563)

They were really weird-looking, but, oh, so delicious!

Mal and I each ate 3 of them.

Question of the Day

What’s your favorite kind of Halloween candy?

What’s your least favorite kind of Halloween candy?

If you buy candy for trick-or-treaters, do you buy your favorite kinds or your least favorite kinds so they won’t temp you?

P.S. Tomorrow is the last day to enter the Ultimate Potato Recipe Contest!

  1. Glad you weren’t affected by Sally!

My fave kind of candy hands down is Reeses cups and peanut m&ms. I’m all about the chocolate! 🙂

  2. hey,

just so you know: its hurricane sandy 🙂 but hey, you got a beach theme going with shelly.

that engagement chicken looks good, i’ll have to try it!

      1. @Tina: No worries, everyone makes mistakes. didn’t Lindsay Lohan call it Hurricane Sally? Oh brother.

I have to say my favorite hween candy is candy corn. Especially the pumpkins. I’m tempted to make my own someday.

  3. My favorite halloween candy is probably Almond Joys!
I hate Reeses and Snickers because I can’t stand peanut butter (i know…)
I usually buy a mix of both, so I don’t eat ALL of it, but still have something to snack on while waiting for the kids 😉

  4. ALMOND JOYS are the best Halloween candy!!! Closely followed by Reese’s! Least favorite is twizzlers and baby Ruth’s… For some reason, I hate those. Have a great day!

  5. Favorite kind would probably have to be Twix bars or Almond Joy (probably the worst two out there). And ya gotta have candy corn sometime around Halloween. Least favorite would have to be Good ‘n’ Plenty.

And for the trick-or-treaters, I usually go middle of the road. Something I like because having a couple pieces is inevitable, but not my favorites so I won’t eat them all!

  6. Love Reese’s Cups and Whoppers – hate really sticky caramels (that could possibly full out my fillings – eek!).
Awesome job on the plank challenge! I think my longest-ever time was two minutes, and that’s because I was working out with my karate black-belt friend. I’ll have to challenge myself again tonight!

  7. Are you kidding me… I live in Western Canada and I’m not stupid enough to know the name of the Hurricane. In fact, I’m watching CNN as we speak even though I’m nowhere near. It’s name is SANDY not SHELLY…

  8. Hurricane Sandy ROCKED PA 🙁 You’re lucky.

Def buy our least favorite candy. Made the mistake of buying our favorites for two many years in a row. Not anymore!

  9. fav kind: reese’s cup. least fav: anything with coconut. yes, i buy some of my favorite kind, but not until the actual day. i take 1 or 2 and then am very generous with the trick or treaters.

  10. We just stocked up on Halloween candy too for the trick-or-treaters! It’s the first time we’ve lived in this house, but it’s a nice neighborhood near a school so we’re definitely expecting some. We got some mix-packs with skittles, reese’s, kitkats, and more! Yum!

  11. That “engagement Chicken” looks delicious! Favorite Halloween candy has to be Reeses’ and Candy Corn while my least favorite has to be laffy taffy or plain M&M’s. I buy good candy for my trick-or-treaters, don’t want them thinking we’re uncool! 🙂

      1. @Tina: It was raining but awesome!! But I have to watch it today. I am scouring the internet for more races and I am SO tempted to sign up for everything! There should be a lock on my computer makes me wait a week before signing up for anything new.

        1. Yay! That’s great to hear! I know what you mean about running a marathon and then signing up for everything. I totally did it! 🙂

  12. Favorite Halloween candy is definitely the mini Hersheys bars…and then the fun pack sizes of the M&Ms with peanuts. Yum!!! Also, the cookies are kind of funny and creepy looking…appropriate for Halloween I suppose!

  13. Candy corn & pumpkins! I love eating the tops off the pumpkins & then the rest. I’m embracing my inner self-control this year so determined not to eat all of the kiddo’s candy…we’ll see how that goes 😉

  14. I love to buy the Halloween candy that is my favorite because when there are leftovers I enjoy it. If we buy the kind that we don’t like, it will end up sitting around the house forever. I also like buying candy that is easy to add to recipes: M&Ms, Reese’s Cups, Snickers, etc. I can chop them up and throw them into a batch of cookies or brownies, and voila! Suddenly a decadent dessert for the next pot luck/holiday party.

  15. Resse’s Peanut Butter Cups used to be my favorite, but I recently tried Peanut Butter Snickers and I think that might take the cake now – soooo delicious! We bought our Halloween candy a few weeks ago (stupid move) and the PB Snickers were gone in a few days and then the other stuff started disappearing. Needless to say, I had to go buy more the other day 😉

  16. I love candy corn and butterfinger! Two treats that are tops of the “No-No” candy list for brace wearers 🙁 Hopefully by Halloween 2013 I can indulge in them again!

  17. Those look like the bags we have at home. I hope we get trick or treaters!

My fave is Twix for sure. My most hated is Tootsie Rolls, yuck!!! I always picked those out of my bad and gave them to my mom when I was little. Luckily she loves them 🙂

  18. I have been reading your blog for around 8 mths now! I love you, I love Murphy and I love Carrots n Cake! I have learned so much about eating healthy and for me it’s a daily struggle. One that I need to get better control over. I find that my life is very cluttered and if I can release the clutter I’ll be better able to concentrate on the things that will make my life happier. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and you and your blog have inspired me to simply be “better” not “perfect” but “better”.

My usual treats for Halloween tend to me more on the healthier side, juice boxes (better than pop), popcorn (better than chips), cheese & crackers my kids get a little miffed because I don’t hand out candy like everyone else, but I say the night this 3 year old little girl dressed in a pricess costume ran to her mom after getting her popcorn and yelled ” Mom, I got popcorn lets go home now and watch a movie” was the night I knew I was handing out the right stuff!!! hahaha lol 🙂

  19. I’ve been making that same Pumpkin Protein smoothie for like a month now – it’s AMAZING and adddddicting!

  20. That would be pretty smart to buy my least favorite candy so I wouldn’t eat all the leftovers. I’m guilty of buying my favorites though. Lately that’s Kit-Kats and Reese’s. I fear the upcoming temptation!

  21. Mini Oh Henry’s or mini Mr.Big’s. I was just saying yesterday that I cannot eat a full chocolate bar but give me 4 mini ones and they are gone, very weird 😉 haha.
I buy ones I do not like as much for the less temptation but still manage to eat my share!

  22. Favorite: Dark chocolate kit kats.
    Least favorite: Junior mints.

I’m totally impressed that you went to CrossFit! Most people would totally have used a hurricane as an “excuse” to skip a workout. Haha. And I’d be one of them!

  23. I love Reeses PB cups, whoppers and kit kats, but I always get stuff I dont like, otherwise, I will snack in between trick or treaters 🙂

  24. Favorite candy: Milk Duds or chewy candy like Dots and Twizzlers. My least favorite is smarties and sweet tarts.

I buy candy for trick or treaters but only a few days before Halloween because not only will I be tempted to get into it but so will my kids!!
