Halloween Candy Poll

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

I can’t believe Halloween is tomorrow. I hope we’re ready for the trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood. Last year, they wiped us clean in just a couple of hours, so Mal and I are ready with tons of candy this year. And I bought all our favorites just in case we have leftovers!

Yesterday’s lunch was a bunch of leftovers from the previous night’s dinner: coconut-almond flour-crusted cod with roasted asparagus and steamed spinach. I chopped up the asparagus and mixed it all together this time. Quick, delicious, satisfying.

A little while later, I whipped up a thick, creamy, sweet, and satisfying Pumpkin Pie Protein Smoothie. It totally hit the spot. In the mix:

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

After drinking my smoothie, I did my Monday time trial for the Plank Challenge. I’ve been using the stopwatch on my iPhone to time myself, so I’ll distract myself by playing with Twitter and Instagram while I am planking. It definitely helps make the time go by faster. I managed 3:33 yesterday, which is a whole minute increase from last week! Woohoo! How’s the Plank Challenge going for you?

Hurricane Sandy never got too bad where we live, so Mal and I decided to go to CrossFit yesterday afternoon.

I thought only crazy people like Mal and me would venture out during a hurricane to do CrossFit, but there was a FULL class last night. I can’t believe so many people showed up!

Last night’s WOD was a special birthday workout for one of our members.

For this workout, you started with 2 Hang Power Cleans and then 2 Burpees onto a 45-pound plate (we just jumped on it). Then, you did 4 reps of each exercise and then 6 reps and so on for 12 minutes. I used 75 pounds for the Hang Power Cleans and started out pretty strong with unbroken reps until I hit 12 reps, which I broke into two sets of 6. At 14 reps, I broke the Hang Power Cleans into two sets of 5 and one set of 4. (The Burpees were no problem. I did them all unbroken.) When I got to the 16 Hang Power Cleans, I basically died and put the bar down a bunch of times and only did sets of 2-3 reps. My forearms were on fire! I just couldn’t hold the bar anymore. I finished with a score of 14 + 12.

When we got home from CrossFit, I threw dinner in the oven, which was Engagement Chicken. I prepped everything ahead of time, so all I had to do was put the bird in the oven when I got home.

Since I was turning on the oven to cook a chicken, I also roasted a spaghetti squash and butternut squash for meals later this week. Two birds, one sword stone.

CHICKEN!?! Murphy‘s favorite!

The Engagement Chicken turned out great (I swear, it’s the easiest, most delicious roast chicken recipe out there), and I made Mustardy Swiss Chard and Butternut Squash to go with it. Mmm”¦ delicious dinner!

For dessert, I baked some “Halloween Treats” sugar cookies. I don’t know how these ended up in our refrigerator, but they did.

IMG_4913 (750x563)

They were really weird-looking, but, oh, so delicious!

Mal and I each ate 3 of them.

Question of the Day

What’s your favorite kind of Halloween candy?

What’s your least favorite kind of Halloween candy?

If you buy candy for trick-or-treaters, do you buy your favorite kinds or your least favorite kinds so they won’t temp you?

P.S. Tomorrow is the last day to enter the Ultimate Potato Recipe Contest!

  1. I love Mounds bars.

Not a big fan of candy corn.

We try to buy a balanced mix of candy for the kiddos. I just do my best to avoid eye contact with it. That is, once I’ve enjoyed a few Mounds 😉

  2. That looks delish!! I’m glad you guys didn’t get hit too hard by Sandy. I’m out in the metrowest and we got hit pretty badly. We still have no power but at least we’re all safe!

  3. i love most chocolate candies & candy corn!
i get a little bummed over candies like lollipops and smarties. (or basically non-chocolate candies. lol)

i’ve never lived anywhere that was a heavy trick-or-treat area (my parent’s house never got any trick or treaters and the apartments i’ve lived in don’t allow trick or treating in the building) but if i did have to give out candy…i’d go for the good stuff!

  4. It is great to hear your crossfit workout was full! You can always exercise without electricity, right? 🙂 PS: your chicken looks amazing! GOOD WORK!

  5. After too many Halloween’s of ending up with way too much candy leftover, but still not wanting to risk running out, I hand out granola bars and bags of kettle corn. No complaints so far. Except from my kids who would like the leftover candy to add to their hauls.

  6. Kit Kats and Reese’s PB cups are my favorite. Anything with caramel is my least favorite…

I should buy stuff I don’t like but, of course, I buy all my favorites. My (little) kids aren’t allowed to eat any leftover candy and my husband is satisfied with one, small piece of chocolate/candy a day. That means I’m the one who ends up eating everything! I have no self-control once I’ve had a bite of something good. My only chance of success is to not have that first bite. 🙂

I’m working on the plank challenge but am stuck at 2 minutes. Not sure the best way to build it up longer!

  7. That Pumpkin Pie Protein smoothie looks delicious! I have all the ingredients and will making myself one here very soon! Just love your recipes!

  8. Reese’s Cups, Snickers, Almond Joy, and I used to LOVE Mr. Goodbar! I remember always loving the commercial for Mr. Goodbar too (people saying whether it was the chocolate or peanuts that made it so delicious)! Looking at this list of candy, it’s clear that the nut (peanut or almond) + chocolate combo reins supreme in my world.

  9. I always buy my favorite in case I have leftovers. I love Twix and Milk Way Midnight. It’s been super hard not to eat through the whole bag though! I’ll have to unload it all on trick or treaters tomorrow so that there is no more temptations 🙂

  10. Guilty of buying candy I know I’ll like. I should do the opposite so I don’t eat it all but hey it is Halloween as all and I deserve a treat too!

Favorite is twix or three musketeers.

Least favorite twizzlers and remember those bottle caps! Do they even sell them anymore? So gross!

  11. Tina all the food looks delish! Love Murphy’s little face staring up at the chicken. I managed 3:40 in the plank today, my goodness it’s a killer..! I find doing it with someone else helps SO much, my brother is doing it with me and it brings out my competitive side 😉

  12. Haha those cookies look more like aliens than Pumpkin Mickey!

My favorite Halloween candies are Twix and Crunch bars. Yum! That being said, we typically end up buying one bag of Halloween candy…and then go back to the store for another because we ate half of it! 🙂

  13. I’ve been reading your blog for several months, but never comment (unless it’s to enter a giveaway :). But today I’m too excited not to tell you, after 10 months of Crossfit I did 3 consecutive unassisted kipping pull-ups today! I don’t know why it took my so long, but I thought to myself, “Self, you might as well try.” And I did it!

  14. I usually don’t really like Halloween candy but I found myself breaking into the PB snickers tonight just b/c I’ve always been so curious to try them. They’re pretty darn tasty too!

  15. I love tootsie rolls and i hate those caramel circles with the white in the middle. I let the boyfriend pick out the candy this year so we’ve got PB cups. I think he has already eaten half of them. Since we don’t get a lot of trick or treaters here (and I have to work) that should be ok.

  16. I love anything with caramel in it! My least favorite candy hands downs is Whoppers. I don’t understand how anyone from this century could like them. Yuck. Oh well, to each his own. I’ve never had trick-or-treaters come to my place of residence, but if I did, I would probably buy a couple bags of candy that I like and then a couple bags of Whoppers. It would be so hard to not give away all the nasty candy and keep the good stuff for myself!

  17. i can plank for over 8 minutes! Yet running an 8 minute mile eludes me. We all have our strengths. Thanks to all for the inspiration!

  18. I should tell you the truth and say that Kit Kats are my favorite. But there are some in the kitchen and I don’t want to eat them. So I won’t mention it.

My least favorite would be candy corn. And there are none in the kitchen. Go figure.

  19. I don’t really like candy (except for dark chocolate!), but Almond Joys are okay. It’s funny, I used to hate them as a kid, but now I like them because of the coconut!

  20. Favorite: Almond Joy
    Least favorite: black licorice
I buy some of my favorites and some that are less favored. I give out the less favored first.

  21. I’m doing the planks along with you! I’m only at 2:15 minutes right now but hopefully i’ll break 3:00 minutes soon:) Also, I’m in college studying nutrition and today in my Community Nutrition class we learned about NuVal…I already knew what it was because of you! Thanks:)

  22. Favs are Reeses Pb cups and kitkats. My least favorites are smarties and good n plenty. PS thanks for the reminder. I need to buy candy on the way home from work.

  23. Oh my goodness, my brother’s golden retriever has such a personality! She is a total sweetheart but has the weirdest quirks, like sticking her face in the couch cushion or being scared of plastic bags blowing in the wind and people on roller blades! She also knows when she’s done something wrong and will hide and shake if you point it out to her

  24. We bought the big bags of assorted m&m’s and air heads. M&M’s for me and air heads for the big kids if there are any leftovers. I dislike any thing gummy!

  25. Favorite Halloween candy is anything chocolate, least favorite- those pumpkin candy corn (the regular are good, but the pumpkin ones are gross). I would definitely never buy my favorite candy for trick or treaters because I would end up munching on them without hesitation. I find it funny that your box looks so professional and more like an office than a CrossFit gym, because mine is literally an old warehouse.

  26. Who’d have thought that pumpkin and banana would be so awesome together? I even totally forgot the honey, but with the sweetness of the banana, I didn’t even miss it. One tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice was a litte too spicy for me, so I’ll probably cut down on that, but next time I get my hands on some kabocha or pumpkin, I will definitely be making this again. Thank you for the recipe!
