The Hair Care Products I Can’t Live Without

As I’ve gotten a little older (and, hopefully, wiser), I’ve started to put a little more thought and effort into my hair care routine. Even just a few years ago, I’d grab whatever I found on sale at CVS or Target without putting much thought into it. These days, I’ve definitely moved past buying the cheapest bottle of shampoo on the shelf and paying no attention to the health of my hair.

I’m by NO means high-maintenance – and often toss my hair in a sweaty ponytail between gym and mom life – but I have also seen such a big difference in the look and feel of my hair since swapping to better quality products that also use safer ingredients, which, of course, is something I am a HUGE fan of.

I frequently get asked about my hair care routine (specifically how I get it so shiny!), so I thought I’d share my must-have hair products. (Related: I talked about my current skincare routine a previous blog post, if you’re interested.) And, of course, I’d LOVE to hear about some of your favorite beauty products since I’m always on the look-out for new things to try, so please leave a comment below!

Andalou Naturals Lavender & Biotin Full Volume Shampoo – This is a great everyday shampoo that really keeps frizz down and doesn’t leave any sort of funky build up. I use this every-other-day to wash my hair, and it’s perfect for sweaty CrossFit workouts or summertime outdoor fun.

Puracy Natural Daily Sulfate-Free Hair Conditioner – One of my girlfriends told me about this conditioner. It smells great, leaves my hair shiny and soft.

Kenra Platinum Silkening Mist (aka “magic hairspray”) – This stuff is the best ever, especially when you’re having a bad hair day and want to freshen it up. This spray instantly adds shine, smooths frizz, and smells so great. My go-to hairstyle lately is toweling-drying my hair, spritzing it with the Sea Salt Spray, letting it dry a little more, and then finishing it with a spray of magic hairspray. This gives me soft, smooth waves with very minimal effort!

Beautycounter’s Sea Salt Spray also works really well if I decide to blow-dry my hair. It smells great and gives my hair a serious and long-lasting lift!

Big Sexy Hair Powder Play (aka “hair boogers”) – Love this stuff! It’s the most amazing volumizer ever. You just sprinkle a little onto your dry hair and then use your fingers to work it in. I basically use it like dry shampoo, but, in addition to sopping up oil, it also adds volume to my roots. It’s great for everyday hair that just needs to be washed and/or styled. It’s seriously THE BEST.

  1. Ok. So I get that me being a guy with shorter hair makes it’s easier to disregard my opinion, but hear me out. I had 4 sisters growing up with one bathroom and my wife has long hair. So I’ve been around a few bathrooms cluttered with hair products.
I have hair that is sometimes frizzy and can lean toward oily on the 2nd day or more. I also have inherited a gene from both mom & dad’s side the family for thinning and or baulding. So I’ve tried a few products over the years to fight my hair issues and help stimulate hair growth. In the last year I did a lot of research on shampoos and hair product after a friend of my wife’s introduced her to a natural based haircare line that claims hair growth and thickness. I was raised by two generations of engineers so I am a natural skeptic of anything. So it got me in a research wave for good hair products that were naturally based or chemical free. In my research I found that most over the counter and many specialty salon shampoo and hair care products have a lot of chemicals in them. Mostly they use sulfates and silicones and parabens to either make the shampoo sudsy and clean better (sulfates) or silicones and parabens to make them shiny, soft or smooth reduce frizz. The probem that these chemicals are not good for your hair – over time they build up on the hair folicle and clog the pores causing stagnant hair growth, and sometimes make the hair brittle, so it breaks. So then I decided to try a few of the strict all natural no chemicals of any kind products: John Masters and Purely Perfect and Raw Hair Organics. For me the shampoo was okay for each of these but the rest of their products like conditioner and styling products didnt work worth a darn for frizz and my wife had same performance issues for split ends and the dry shampoo products as well. So then I went back and tried the chemical filled brands like BeautyCounter and Sephora and I even tried Morrocan oil. I liked them! But then I was back to the issues of chemicals. So the really pure natural stuff is good for your hair but just so-so in performance. And the chemical filled brands work well but then what am I doing long term for hair health and growth? Seems it’s a conundrum. I think I’ll keep looking for an all natural or mostly all natural based brand that works. Ill keep you posted. Have a Big day.

    1. BeautyCounter is chemical filled? I assumed that all their products were made with clean ingredients and they didn’t use chemicals. Hmmm.

  2. Wen products have used for many years and have very long blonde hair and have so many people wanting to know what I use.
I do use the complete line and know there were some bad articles written about it but not one time have I had any issues with the products.

  3. I have been a long time fan of VO5 shampoos, but I do splurge on conditioners!! I will give the Puracy conditioner a try – I like that it is sulfate- free . Thanks for the recommendations!

  4. The Big Sexy Hair Powder Play sounds fantastic and just might is what I need. I will definitely give this a try.
Thank you for sharing your favourite products!

  5. I use the Kenra Platinum Silkening Mist on both my hair and my daughter’s hair, and it makes both of our hair so much better! Especially in this super hot weather we’ve been having lately.

  6. I started using Monat products about a month ago. A local woman is an ambassador for them and swears by them saying it changes your hair and is naturally based. So far I have not seen much difference. I have curly blonde hair and my hair looks pretty good on day one of wash but after sleeping on it, it looks bad and gets tangled. I’d love to find a product that helps with day 2!
