Good Times with M & m

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Yesterday ruled. I had such a nice time with M & m!

My morning started with a bowl of Greek yogurt mixed with fresh blueberries and trail mix.

After breakfast, I got myself ready to go to CrossFit which included mixing up an amino acid drink to take with me.

As part of my sponsorship for the CrossFit Games, GNC sent me a whole bunch of their products to try out. I have to admit, I never considered taking supplements outside of a daily multivitamin and fish oil, but I’m excited that GNC has given me to the opportunity to test out some of their products and see how they impact my recovery and performance at CrossFit.

So, what’s this amino acid stuff all about? It’s new to me too, so here’s quick explanation from Men’s Health:

Your workout is a muscle-growth party, and a [drinking] a branched chain amino acid (BCAA) drink kick-starts it. BCAAs are protein building blocks that fuel your muscles and help them grow.

And here’s some more info from GNC:

Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) – leucine, isoleucine and valine – are critically important for stimulating muscle protein synthesis, reducing protein breakdown and preserving muscle glycogen stores. The body uses these essential amino acids as fuel during exercise.

It’s important to note that BCAAs won’t help if you aren’t eating enough calories and protein, so I’m planning to drink a protein shake after my workouts to see if it’ll help me recover and build muscle. It’s going to be a little experiment! We’ll see how it goes!

Yesterday’s WOD was a fun one!

IMG_7272 (563x750)

It was a partner workout and our coaches named it after one of the guys at our box!

(In teams of two)

3 rounds for time

30 “Don Allans”

1500 meter Row

*One person works, one person rests
*Weights will be determined by coaches in class

Don Allan – Perform a barbell roll-out, then power clean the bar from the floor. Finish with a push press. That is 1 repetition.

Everyone was paired up with a partner and then each group decided how to split up the workout. The class before us suggested splitting the “Don Allens” into small increments, so my partner and I went back and forth doing 5 reps each until we hit 30. For the rowing, we each did 300 meters until we reached 1500 meters for the first two rounds and then we banged out the last round with 750 meters each. I used 75 pounds for the “Don Allens” and my partner and I finished in 38:43.

After CrossFit, Mal and I headed home, drank protein shakes, showered up, and then Googled dog-friendly restaurants in Boston. It was a beautiful day, so we wanted to go out to lunch, but we also didn’t want to leave Murphy at home. Thanks to the powers of Google, we learned that the Cambridge Brewing Company allows dogs on their patio. Dogs and beer? Sweet!

Murphy was so well-behaved during our lunch. He just chilled under our table.

Beerunch? Yes, please!

To drink, I picked the Mass Appeal, which was a collaboration brew between Cambridge Brewing Company, Mystic Brewery, Enlightenment Ales, Idle Hands Craft Ales, and Night Shift Brewing. It was one of the most interesting beers I’ve drank in awhile. It had so many different flavors””malty, citrusy, and smoky all in one sip. My mouth didn’t know what to do!

To eat, I ordered the Grilled Eggplant & Shrimp Salad, which came with green beans, tomatoes, goat cheese, and an herb vinaigrette. It was fresh and delicious!

After lunch, Mal, Murphy, and I spent a little time wandering around Kendall Square and then we hit the road to head home.

For dinner, Mal and I headed to Burton’s to visit a couple of our friends, who were working the evening shift. Mal and I ate a late lunch, so we sat at the bar and ordered a couple of drinks (a glass of wine and a Piña Colada Martini for me) and an appetizer (Philly Spring Rolls) to share.

The Philly Spring Rolls were amazing. Yum! They were made with diced sirloin, onions, and lots of provolone and American cheese. Please order these if you visit Burton’s!

Back at home, I ended up getting hungry later in the night, so I made an omelet with mozzarella cheese and buffalo sauce. It hit the spot and then I headed straight to bed.

Fun day!

  1. Sounds like a great day! I love spring rolls…especially the tofu spring rolls from Whole Foods with their peanut sauce. DELICIOUS!!

  2. What a fun day! It was gorgeous out in Boston yesterday! I’m curious to see if you notice a difference taking the amino acids before CrossFit. I’ve debated trying them out before but never committed to it fully so I’d love to see if you think they affect your performance. Those Don Allens sound tough! What a fun and different workout, I’ve never tried them before!

  3. Your muscles look freakin awesome in those pics!! Seriously you go girl! I can see such a difference from before you started crossfit. Whatever you’re doing is working so keep it up!

  4. I love googling dog-friendly restaurants! I wish they would let us bring dogs everywhere :). And can’t wait to see what you think of the supplements- the idea of tgem all always overwhelms me!

  5. I see ppl already commented on this but I was going to say..I reallllly hope you stopped to take notice and high five yourself for how AMAZING your arms look!!!! wuwu!

  6. Sounds like you had a fun day. I lost my cross fit virginity yesterday and I am hooked! Im starting up the cross fit foundations class July 9th :D! WOOHOO! Murphy looks so chill. He must have been warm with the summer heat. I love your top its cute.

  7. Ummm can I have your arms? They are amazing! Also, I love BCAAs. I probably need to take more than I do, but I always have some after a workout and they definitely keep me from being too sore the next day.

  8. I can’t believe how green the grass is! We haven’t had measurable rain in 2 months and this week the temp has been 106 – 108 degrees. Just miserable here in southern Illinois.

  9. I just started using BCAA’s and I have to say I feel awesome. Protein Shake after and half a scoop of BCCA’s before a workout, half after 20-30 minutes before you shake! My muscles are recovering heaps faster. I got the BSN brand which has 10 g of Micronized Anti-Catabolic Amino Acids per Serving. So random as I was actually going to ask your advice prior to buying it!

  10. I thought I recognized the Cambridge Brewing Company and realized I used it in a project about creating a hypothetical green wedding venue in Cambridge for one of my hospitality classes. Seeing as I’ve never been to Cambridge I’ve never been there but it looks great! I might stop there when I’m in town for the Healthy Living Summit!

  11. Wouldn’t mind trying the BCAA as I have been reading a lot of positives about them lately. I will have to look for a more natural one, though. This on has sucralose (Splenda) in it and unfortunately it gives me headaches.

  12. Tina you look incredible! Since the beginning of your healthy transformation you have been so fit and toned, but CrossFit has really changed your body! I didn’t think that you could get any leaner than you already were, but you look beyond fabulous. I am so inspired and now very very very interested in CrossFit! You should do before & after Crossfit pictures! So glad you had a nice weekend! Health & Happiness xo

  13. I have to say I agree with everyone else. I’ve never been super interested in trying CrossFit, but you’re really motivating me. You look absolutely gorgeous and healthy! 🙂

P.S. Mal and Murphy are looking quite fit, as well. 😉

  14. Looks like a wonderful day 🙂

And I’m with everyone else – I never thought Crossfit was really for me, but you’ve definitely changed that opinion!

  15. You should have titled this post differently:
    “The great arms family”
You both are in amazing shape! Congratulations for your hard work, keep it up 😉

  16. Seems you had quite a day. But the best part of it, from my hungry perspective, it’s that plate of Shrimp Salad, must… have… it!

  17. Ahhh I always wanna visit somewhere like Boston! Especially seeing how cute and pretty it looks in the background on your pics. And my husband takes amino acid pills and it seems to be a great supplement! I took it a few times, and it gives me sooooo much energy.

  18. My fiancé just started taking BCAA after recommendations from people at our box, but I don’t honestly think he even understands it. haha. However, I tried his and I did not like it–it’s too sweet for me and turns his tongue blue. He looks like a weird smurf after CrossFit:)

  19. I am so jealous. It was another 55 degree cloudy rainy day here in Seattle. I had plans to take my dog for a nice long hike as they predicted sun. So disappointing. Unfortunately my dachshund will not behave at dog friendly restaurants if there are other dogs there. She thinks other dogs, other than doxies, should not be allowed to share her space. You are lucky to have such a well behaved dog.

  20. What a perfect day! And another compliment for your amazing muscles 🙂 Your blog is making so excited for my free Intro to Crossfit class in two weeks!

  21. I worked in Kendall Square for some time… CBC was dangerously close by! I went many times 🙂 Have you been to Mead Hall yet? Also in Kendall, great craft beer selection (although the length of the list is a bit daunting!)

  22. OKAY holy SHAT. You look amazing. No really, your arms???? your legs!?!?!?! im sorry lol i havent been on your blog in a while but you like phenomenal. honestly, im hitting up my local crossfit if im going to look like you!
