Two of my favorite “activities” in life are CrossFit and drinking. Haha! Hey, I work hard and play hard! I especially love doing these things together as seen here, here, and here. So when Smirnoff reached out to me about hosting a “Ladies’ Night (Work) Out,” which would include a workout followed by a sampling of Smirnoff’s new Sorbet Light vodkas, I was all about it. I knew my CrossFit girlfriends would love it too, so I planned the event at our box last night.

The event started with a CrossFit workout, which was taught by Coach Dani. The workout had three parts: warm-up, WOD prep, and WOD (Workout of the Day).

029

After Dani went over the various exercises, we got to work!

049

The warm-up involved Burpees.

043

Everyone loves Burpees!

034

045

Once we were nice and warm, we started on the first part of the WOD prep, which was practicing Toes-to-Bar.

Kim and I love chalk.

051

The last part of the WOD prep was getting our shoulders ready for Push Presses and working up to the weight we’d use for the WOD.

065

We love heavy weights!

067

076

After about 20 minutes of prep, it was time to do the WOD!

078

We got all set up”¦

082

And then the clock started.

084

3”¦2”¦1”¦GO!

091

The workout was a 12-minute AMRAP of:

  • 6 Toes-to-Bar
  • 9 Push Presses
  • 12 Kettlebell Swings

093

At first, the workout didn’t see too tough, but as the minutes passed, those three exercises got harder and harder. Holy goodness, my arms were burning!

It seemed like all of the ladies really enjoyed the workout””everyone was definitely working hard!

134

I cut out of the workout a few minutes early, so I could get things ready for the Smirnoff tasting. I recruited Mal to help me, so we were able to get everything set up and ready to go, so the ladies could get their drink on as soon as they finished the WOD.

I sampled all three flavors of Smirnoff Sorbet Light: Raspberry Pomegranate, Lemon, and Mango Passion Fruit. Each vodka was mixed into a different flavored punch, so the ladies could try a taste of each.

Everyone said they liked all of the different drink options, but the favorite of the night was definitely the Smirnoff Sorbet Light Tropical Martini, which was light, refreshing, and tropical-tasting. It was such a hit, I ended up making two batches of it!

4 Tips for Enjoying Low-Calorie Cocktails

Add a “splash” of juice

The majority of fruity cocktails are loaded with calories and sugar, which usually come from soda and/or fruit juice. Some of these drinks””depending on size, of course””pack as many as 300 calories each! Crazy, right? When I’m in the mood for something fruity, I just add a splash of fruit juice, which typically goes a long way for not a lot of calories.

Use club soda

Club soda (aka seltzer or soda water) has lots of bubbles, but no calories, so it’s a great low-calorie (er, no calorie) mixer for cocktails. One of my favorite ways to keep my cocktails light is by mixing a flavored vodka with club soda. Smirnoff Sorbet Light + club soda, for example, would only be 78 calories per drink. Not too shabby, right? Along the same lines, you can opt for diet soda instead of regular to save some serious calories.

Drink your frozen cocktail on the rocks

Like fruity drinks, frozen cocktails are packed with calories and sugar. Some of them have so many calories, they are almost like a meal! If I really want a margarita or piña colada, I make a lighter version or ask the bartender to make it on the rocks instead of having the frozen variety. This way, I save calories, but still get all of the delicious cocktail taste!

Alternate water with booze

Alternating glasses of water (or club soda) with my cocktails slows my pace, so I consume less alcohol and fewer calories. Sometimes, I’ll add a splash of fruit juice and/or a piece of lemon or lime to a glass of soda water, so it feels like I’m drinking cocktail (aka “mocktail”), but for minimal calories. Swapping in some non-alcoholic drinks also hydrates me, so I don’t wake up feeling like garbage the next morning.

The ladies ended up hanging out for more than an hour after the workout””eating, drinking, and chatting up a storm.

Everyone enjoyed themselves so much, the owners of our box are actually thinking about offering a regular ladies night! Yay!
