Friday Morning Iced Coffee Date (10/7)

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Good morning and very HAPPY Friday to you! What a week. I’m exhausted and so ready for my pajamas, couch, and a big ol’ glass of wine. I’m also very much looking forward to our coffee date this morning! 🙂

Ok, first things first… If we were having coffee right now, I would tell you (and THANK you, especially if you purchased a tank top) that we raised $665 for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA)!! Yayyyy! I’m still working toward my goal, so if you’d like to make a donation, here is my personal page.

Speaking of Crohn’s and Colitis, I recently stumbled upon this list of IBD blogs and just wanted to share it with those of you who might be interested.

Also related: I share my running journey with Ulcerative Colitis over on the Brooks Running blog.

Mal told me that I need to be more like The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson. I know, right? Haha! Well, the other day, I was complaining about how I have no time to work out anymore since I’m so busy with CNC and DTFN nowadays. Mal isn’t someone to listen to excuses (just one of the many reasons I love him), so his reply was: “Tina, you need to be more like The Rock.” I literally laughed out loud and then waited for him to explain. Apparently, Mal follows The Rock on Instagram, and he’ll wake up at 4/4:30 AM to fit in his workout if he knows he’s going to have a busy day. Well, ok then. Roger that, Mal. I always say (and believe!) if there’s a will, there’s a way, so I set my alarm for 4:00/4:30 AM a few days this week, so I could fit in a workout. It’s actually made quite a difference, and I don’t feel like I’m chained to my laptop all day. Of course, I’m tired, but I’ve started to go to bed a little earlier, and I assume I’ll get used to it soon enough. So, yea, I was kind of like The Rock this week. Or something? Roar.

If we were having coffee together, I would also tell you to check out this recipe for Gluten-Free Pizza Dough that I made for Chex. It’s perfect for a fall grilling! My friends at General Mills wanted me to let you know that all Chex cereals now are free of artificial preservatives. This is part of their journey to make their cereals better, and I love them for that. They really are such a great company and really listen to their customers.

When we were in Newport over the weekend, we rented The Lion King to watch with Qman. It was his first time seeing it, and, boy, did he love it. Mal and I also really enjoyed the movie and sang along to It’s funny how lyrics come back to you like that. I made a comment that my sister (as a kid) was absolutely obsessed with The Lion King. She basically watched it on repeat for, like, a year straight, and I pretty much know all of the songs by heart because of it. Mal had a similar experience and said it was probably the movie he watched most as a kid. Mine was definitely The Goonies, and I’m still in love with it after all these years. Fun fact: The movie debuted 31 (!!!) years ago!

I would also tell you how I eat my coconut butter. I get this question all the time from readers, so here are my favorite ways:

  • On top of sliced banana and nuked in the microwave for 20 seconds
  • Spread on toast or rice cakes with or without peanut butter/almond butter
  • On apple slices
  • On pancakes
  • Stirred into oatmeal
  • In baked goods and no-baked desserts
  • Straight from the jar

I would also tell you that I bought a buttload of Halloween candy from Boxed at a really good price. We get a decent amount of Trick-or-Treaters at our house, so I want to make sure we are prepared. Side note: I actually can’t believe I’m so on top of our Halloween candy situation this year. Usually, I wait until the very last minute and pay a TON of money for it. FYI: Boxed also now gives you free samples with every order, so that was a fun surprise when I opened the box! Smile

And, finally, I would tell you that this photo made me laugh out loud!

Question of the Day

  1. I had to convert my schedule to waking up at 4 am in order to get a workout since having kids. Hopefully your schedule will change once Q man gets older. It is great- no interruptions, just time for me. But just a cautionary note: take care of yourself with diet and sleep. Sometimes, I find that the early workout messes with my diet. I am snacking longer and later in order to stay awake for the energy needed to take care of my family. So while I am getting a workout in, I am taking away my benefits at the end of the day because I am tired. Good luck!

  2. I wake up at 4:30 during the week to fit in my workout at 5am. It’s the only time of day that works. I’ve been doing it for years and now it’s NBD. I actually feel weird when I don’t get up and get it done now. It will come! Change takes time to adjust to.

  3. My sister and I used to watch Annie all the time! We used to sing, dance and knew the script word for word… such happy memories, however my dad said recently that he nearly tore his hair out hearing the songs being played over and over again lol… obviously not an Annie fan 🙂

    The pizza looks yummy!

  4. I had to switch to 4 am workouts a few years ago. I had a very long and TRAFFIC-Y commute at the time. I got tired of watching my workout time slip away as I sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic, so I changed my entire sleeping schedule to make sure I had a good sweat before work! Now I’m at a new job, but the 4 am workouts have stuck — a pre-dawn workout is better than coffee, in my opinion!

  5. I bet I could sing all of the Lion King songs, too. So funny how lyrics have that ability! I go through morning workout phases. I think it takes my body so long to wake up that I just prefer the later workouts.

  6. I also get up at 4:30am to get in a 5:00am crossfit each morning. I sleep in a little on the weekends (6:30am) but this way the hour is the best time to not feel like I am missing out on time with my little guy. I work away from home, so getting home early enough to get to snuggle and chat with my 11-month old is my motivation to make it work. Surprisingly, he is also my inspiration to push a little harder while I am at the gym. I want him to have healthy examples at home. Also, he’s growing so quickly and loves to be lifted in the air, so I need all the practice I can get! my advice would be to try making a new friend at the gym to keep each other motivated that early!

  7. I would have to agree with mal on this one. If there is a will there is a way. Make it a priority or wake up early plus it sets you up for success for your day! On another note I’m enjoying the Friday coffee date! I love athleta clothing so much it’s hard not to buy it all and I’m very jealous of you having fall weather. I live in Florida and we don’t really get fall weather.

  8. If you haven’t already seen Stranger Things, you should definitely watch it! It reminded me so much of The Goonies

  9. Yay to being on your halloween game! I have to buy mine in the next couple of days (Costco for me) because I literally dream about the little trick-or-treater bags we make as they excite me beyond belief! We only get ~31 trick-or-treaters but it’s kind of nice because we can then put the big chips/bars/ring pops/etc and the kids love it!

  10. Home Alone was/is my obsession. Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve seen it. 🙂
Hope you get adjusted to your new workout schedule soon!

  11. According to my mom I ruined our copy of The Jungle Book because I watched it so much and once got PB&J all over it. But I remember watching Beauty and the Beast ALL THE TIME with my sisters. When the Celine Dion/Peabo Bryson version of “Beauty and the Beast” came on during the credits, we would dance on the fireplace like we were putting on a show.

  12. I loved the lion king and beauty and the beast growing up! The new beauty and the beast movie is coming out next march and I’m not ashamed to say I will watch it! lol I’ve always loved the rock, since his wrestling days! I don’t know if I could get up at 4 am though, I work night shift and I have to get my sleep! lol Also the pizza looks delicious!! I’ve been eating Amy’s Margherita Pizza and it’s gluten free 2 times a week. You should try it if you’re looking for something quick and easy. The sauce is made from organic tomatoes, and has mozzarella cheese sprinkled with parmesan and basil. She has more pizza options too.

  13. We didn’t have cable TV growing up, so I watched a TON of movies on repeat. Some favorites: Homeward Bound (loved that the animals talked!), The Parent Trap, The Sound of Music, Grease, and of course all the Disney movies (Alladin and Little Mermaid were probably my favorite).

  14. Hi Tina,

I’ve been dating a lovely fellow from the Boston area for about a year now. I’ve been a Marylou’s fan for as long as I can remember, but I know you visit other flavored iced coffee shops. Would you mind listing a few out for me? I’d love to branch out!
