First Half Marathon Training Run

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

Good morning!

I couldn’t decide what I wanted for breakfast yesterday morning, so I had a little bit of everything: toast with sunflower butter and banana slices, Greek yogurt with cereal and more banana slices, and a glass of iced coffee with almond milk. I love meals with a bunch of different tastes””they keep my taste buds happy!

After breakfast, I did some work and then headed out for my first half marathon training run. I’m running the ZOOMA Half Marathon in Annapolis on June 1, so I “officially” started my “training” yesterday.

After my 4-mile run on Sunday, I realized I’m in no shape to run a half marathon, so I sat down and created a little 10-week training plan to get me ready to run 13.1 miles. Ok, my training plan actually isn’t much of training plan at all, which is why I put “training” in quotation marks in the previous paragraph. You see, every time I make a training plan for a half marathon, I either end up injuring myself or having a flare, so I’m taking a much more relaxed approach this time. Basically, my plan is to do one long run each week with CrossFit, short runs, and yoga mixed in. It’s not like I’m out of shape, so I don’t think I need to whip my butt into gear, but my body is definitely not ready to run a half marathon. Adding a long run each week (I’m using the ZOOMA Half Marathon Training Plan) and keeping up with my other workouts should help me cross the finish line on race day, no problem!

Yesterday was a beautiful day for a run. The temps were in the upper 40s/low 50s with tons of sunshine and a light breeze. It really was the perfect weather for a run, and it made me so happy. Spring has sprung!

I planned to run 7 miles, but when I got to mile 3, I received a call from the delivery company, who was bringing our new (impulsively purchased) refrigerator, saying they were about 10-15 minutes away. Their call came 45 minutes before the two-hour window they were expected to arrive. Crap. I told them I was out running and would get home as quickly as possible, and then moved my little legs as fast as they would carry me 3 miles home.

When I finally arrived at my house (totally out of breath and flustered), I apologized profusely to the delivery guys for making them wait. Thankfully, they didn’t seem to mind at all. (They were drinking coffee and listening to music in the truck.) They told me they actually saw me running about 2 miles from my house and should have picked me up. Haha!

While the guys unpacked our new fridge, I took everything out of our old fridge and said goodbye.

I can’t say I was too sad to see it leave. It leaked water the whole way out of the house!

Hello, new refrigerator! Welcome to your new home!

(Please note the pug tail photo bomb. Haha!)

Once I organized our new fridge (it’s so pretty inside), I whipped up a quick lunch, which was Cheesy Couscous with Chicken and Spinach. It was so delicious!

  1. I’m training right along with you for the same race! Not so secretly hoping to meet you and Theodora at some point that weekend! 🙂

My goal is to finish in 2:15, my first half four years ago my time was 2:27 and I’m in much better shape now so I think I can do it!

  2. I have a Half Marathon in June and my goal is to finish it! It is supposed to be a tough course because it has soo many hills and its in the middle of summer so its hot! I am hoping to do the ZOOMA half in Cape Cod in September! The ZOOMA race series sounds like a blast!

  3. Training for the Run to Remember 1/2 on Memorial Day Weekend. First race post-baby and very excited to be back into running.

  4. How do you like the freezer on the bottom??? I have heard mixed reviews on this aspect of freezers like yours.

  5. I just need to sign up for a half marathon so I will have to start training. The ZOOMA series seems really fun! I bet you’re kinda glad those men didn’t pick you up so you could finish your run!

      1. That happens to me, too. I live in Brooklyn, and there’s nothing like a deserted street at sundown to make me pick up my pace. I guess whatever works, right? Ha ha

  6. I am doing my first Half in May-The Big Lake Half and my goal is to finish! My longest run to date is only 7.5; I have a 15K this weekend which I hope is a good run and will let me now how ready I am for the half.

Not gonna lie, I am really nervous!

  7. I’m positive there’s no way I could do a marathon, half or otherwise. My body just doesn’t like running. I’ve heard good things about the Couch to 5k program though…I wonder if it really works?

  8. I am running my very first 1/2 marathon May 26th – The Run to Remember in Boston. I am just hoping to successfully complete the entire 13.1 miles rather then worry about speed for my first race 🙂

  9. Good luck! I am the same as you, I don’t follow a “plan” just each weekend I do a long run, each weekend it gets a mile or so longer. The week is filled with my normal weight lifting workouts, 1 relaxed 4-6 miler and 1 speed work.

I have a ton of races in the books, but wishing a Zooma was coming this way

  10. I’d love to see your training plan! I have my first 1/2 in August, and I’m CrossFitting 3 days a week, so I’d like to see how you’re incorporating the two!

Also, I love that quesadilla recipe!

  11. I’m training for two races – the first is a half marathon in April and the second is a half marathon in June. I am training (and am a mentor this year) with Team Challenge, the fundraising arm of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, and running with some amazing people!!

  12. I’m training for a 10K in 2 weeks and a 5K that I want to PR in a month. I’m on small races right now since I’m coming back from an IT Band injury that’s had me out for months! And I love that your fridge leaked on the way out, it’s like it wanted to leave its final mark!

  13. I have the same fridge. Nice choice, you will love the french doors. I’m doing a half on May 19 in Newburyport MA. My goal is finish under 2 hours. My last half I PR’d with 2:01.

  14. I have that fridge!! Yes, I like having everything at eye-level too.

I’m “training” for the San Francisco Marathon’s half distance this June. My “training” program is just long runs once a week to ensure I don’t die.

  15. I love my refrigerator with french doors…I think it changed my life 🙂 The pug tail photo bomb is absolutely hilarious!

I will complete my 3rd 5K in two months this weekend, so I think I’ll take a little race break and explore some other workouts that I have never done (CrossFit, yoga, etc.) and maybe train for a half for this winter in Florida or sometime next year.

  16. Ha-ha that’s funny, although I think that’s how horror films start, men in a big truck asking women if they need a ride….lol. Anyway, I am training for a few! I just signed up for the Color Run on July 27th and I may be signing up for the Dirty Girl Run the weekend before. Small races, but its a start in the right direction for me!

    Sara 🙂

  17. Nice fridge! I love the double door style but who doesn’t? LoL.
Anyway, I’m training for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in DC in April. I was super excited when I signed up and got started and then… I got super sick for 3 weeks! Now, its such a struggle to get back on track and the race is only a month away! So the goal is to just finish. I ran 6 slow miles last weekend so I know I am on track to at least run 10 miles of the race and walk the rest. Better than nothing! One day, I hope to actually train properly for a race and PR!

  18. I’m planning on the Zooma Annapolis 10K! I keep getting sidelined by minor injuries this year, but hopefully it all works out. Incorporating yoga and strength training as well to hopefully keep those injuries at bay.

  19. Good luck with the half marathon “training”! I’m running a half in October.

Right now, I am training (not very successfully as I’m coming back from being rather sick) for the BAA 5K on April 14. After that I have the Harpoon 5-Miler on May 19. Wish me luck!

  20. I’m training for my first 1/2 in June in San Diego! I’m just hoping to finish and feel good doing it…ok I lie, I’m secretly hoping for something around 2:15. Good luck with your “training”! 🙂

  21. Nice fridge! I wish I were training for something, wimped out on registering for the Cox half marathon in Providence on 5/12…would love to do it, but not sure I can train enough with my little one in tow all the time. Good luck with your training!

  22. Running an obstacle race is on my bucket list for this year- so I signed up for the Warrior Dash this summer. I actually was eyeing up your “Run Burpee Run” workout to use as a sort of training routine- short bursts with strength in between seems like perfect practice for an obstacle race!

  23. I love running when the weather is 45 – 60 degrees! Makes it so much better and puts me in such a good mood. It’s great you had cooperative weather for your run!

Love the pug tail in the photo of the fridge. I have a pug, too, and those tails are the cutest things. Love them!

  24. My hubby and I just signed up for our first ever 5K in May, and we’re super exited! Good luck with the half, I’m sure you’ll kick butt! And congrats on the beautiful new fridge! 🙂

  25. I’m running the Zooma half marathon in Annapolis as well!! I’m really excited for it. I’m currently training for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in DC on April 28th. I’m running with Leukemia Lymphoma Society and it’ll be my first half ever! I’m still trying to figure out a way to balance my lifting schedule with a running schedule without spending 2 hours at the gym. I still haven’t found the balance.

  26. I’m having major fridge envy!!
I’m running my first half marathon on April 7th in San Francisco and I’m nervous!
Im really just hoping to run the whole thing but secretly I hoping to come in under 2:10. Eeek!

  27. I’m so jealous of the new refrigerator. I’m currently in an apartment with super-old appliances, and I’m just dying for an upgrade. Someday, someday. Right now, I am “training” for Dam to Dam, a huge 20k in Des Moines. Unfortunately, my training (other than kickboxing and resistance work) has been not much at all. At this point, my goal is just to finish. 🙂
