Tonight, Mal and I celebrated Valentine’s Day a day late with dinner at Sportello.
Chef Barbara Lynch’s modern interpretation of a lunch counter, Sportello offers simple, market-driven Italian dishes in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood.
More than a year ago, my sister gave me a gift card to Sportello, but, somehow, I forgot about it. A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon it when cleaning my wallet, so I figured Valentine’s Day was the perfect time to use it. Plus, I love Barbara Lynch and heard great things about Sportello, so I really wanted to try it.
Our meal started with freshly baked bread.
And a Drink.
For my entrée, I ordered the gorgonzola fonduta from the appetizer menu.
It was basically gorgonzola fondue served with lots of goodies for dipping.
Toasted bread, salumi, dates, and roasted vegetables.
Oh my gosh, it was out of this world!!! One of the best cheese fondues I have ever eaten! Mal practically fought me for the last couple of bites! I really didn’t want to share, but I couldn’t deny my love ridiculously delicious cheese at our Valentine’s Day celebration.
I also ordered a side of braised kale. It was tasty, but not what I expected. For some reason, I automatically thought braised kale = garlic flavor, but instead it was citrusy.
For dessert, Mal and I shared the cookie plate. Of course, I loved them all.
We also enjoyed a couple of decaf coffees with milk.
Lovebirds.
Celebrating Valentine’s Day a day later was totally worth the wait”” no super busy restaurants or jacked up prices. Mal and I enjoyed a nice, little evening together. I’m so glad to have him in my life.

Sounds like a perfect V-Day dinner! 🙂
I love the dippers that they served with the cheese fondue – they’re so different from what you would expect!
That looks delicious! I’m glad you guys had a good night out. 🙂
What a fun night! I love fondue. I think they make for the funnest meals and this one looks particularly delicious. 😀
What a fun night! I love the cookie plate. It looks so yummy! Who can resist a good cookie? 🙂

My BF and I went out last night for Vday too! It was so nice and EMPTY!
I love finding old gift cards. Its like Chirstmas all over again. I recently found a PF Changs card, it was an awesome un-planned dinner that night.
That fondue just made my mouth water!
I love Sportello! It’s just a few blocks from where I live in the Seaport. Gabe and I have gone there a few times for lunch dates (easy walk from where he works and from my “office” at home) and I have loved every meal there. Their braised kale is to die for! It’s absolutely my favorite thing, other than their ice cream cookie sandwich, on their menu. Sadly, I can’t have the cookies or the cookie sandwich anymore, or many of my other favorites on the menu now that I know I’m gluten-intolerant. So sad.
It looks like you two had a fantastic post-holiday rush Valentine’s date! Best way to do it!
Celebrating early or late is definitely the way to go!
I went out to eat with my Hubby too. Sometimes its just nice to relax and let someone else do the cooking!
I agree with you about celebrating a day late being worth it. They usually jack up the prices, pack the restaurant and try to move you out as quickly as possible on Valentine’s Day. My boyfriend was going to make reservations for us this year and I told him I’d rather make him a special dinner. It was perfect. I’m glad that you enjoyed your (day late) Valentine’s dinner with Mal!! 🙂
I love the fondue dipper options! I suggested doing a cheese fondue the other night but then I decided against it because I just wasn’t into eating only bread, cheese or apple. I believe fondue is NOW in order!
