Happy Earth Day, friends!

Today is the perfect time to make a personal pledge to celebrate Mother Earth all year long. Caring about the environment isn’t just something Whole Foods Market does on Earth Day, but instead it’s one of their core values. I love that Whole Foods respects the environment in this way, so I am joining in and sharing some simple ways that we can all “green our routine” by shopping there. You might be surprised by just how easy they are to do! And, bonus, you can save money while becoming a greener shopper at the same time! There’s a giveaway at the end of this post, so be sure to share how you practice green living on a regular basis for a chance to win a $100 gift card to Whole Foods Market!

EAT IN SEASON

Harvesting foods when they’re in season uses less energy and resources while, at the same time, providing customers with the best and freshest flavors. This also means when in-season products are in abundance, they’re sold at much more affordable prices, which saves you money!

Spring is prime time for asparagus, artichokes, berries, and mangoes as well as seasonal wild-caught seafood, like Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified halibut and scallops, so be sure to look for these items at your local Whole Foods right now!

SHOP ORGANIC

Organic food is grown with USDA-regulated farming standards that protect our land and water supplies and prohibit the use of toxic pesticides. You might think shopping organic is expensive, but there are actually lots of ways to save, including looking for seasonal bargains, weekly sales, and store brand options like Whole  Foods Market’s 365 Everyday Value brand for great prices on organic items year-round. Fun tip: Whole Foods also offers digital coupons through its mobile app to help you save even more. Check it out at wfm.com/app.

BUY IN BULK

Shopping the bulk bins at Whole Foods lets you buy ingredients without packaging in exact quantities, which means you cut down on both food and materials waste. Plus, you only pay for what you buy, so neither food or money goes to waste.

FYI: You can find all sorts of great ingredients in the bulk bins– from polenta and nutritional yeast to brown rice flour and dried mango. I love shopping the bulk bins to try new foods without committing to an entire package.

BUY SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD

When buying wild-caught seafood, be sure to go for choices that are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or rated “Green” or “Yellow” by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program and the Safina Center to ensure that your choice is sustainable. You can also branch out and try new-to-you sustainable species, such as Responsibly Farmed paiche that help take the pressure off popular picks like salmon, tuna, and shrimp.

BUY FROZEN FISH

You can reduce your footprint by buying frozen instead of fresh. Unlike fresh seafood that has to travel quickly by air across long distances, frozen can travel to retailers more slowly via boat or other more efficient modes of transportation. And with flash-freezing technology, you’re still getting the highest quality and best-tasting seafood, often for less money, which goes for both wild-caught and farm-raised varieties.

VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLARS

One of the easiest things you can do is vote with your dollars by purchasing brands that share your same values. Whole Foods works with tons of companies that have the environment in mind when it comes to their business practices. For example, Rogue Creamery uses solar panels to provide at least 45% of the energy needed to power its entire production and offices. How cool is that? When I learned about this, I immediately searched for their Anniversary Blue that must have looked especially delicious to Q-Man because he tried to taste it right through its packaging! Ha!

BRING YOUR OWN REUSABLE BAG

Using your own reusable grocery bags at Whole Foods is an easy way to save plastic and valuable resources. Many Whole Foods stores offer discounts per bag, so you’ll save money too. Fun fact: In 2008, Whole Foods Market became the first national grocery store to eliminate the use of disposable plastic grocery bags from all of its stores, which has kept an estimated more than 150 million plastic bags out of landfills and the environment since. Isn’t that amazing?
