Does the Holiday Season Start Too Soon?

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

This morning, I hosted a lovely brunch at my house for my mom and sister. As always, it was so nice to see them!

Back in June, the three of seriously struggled to find a time to get together. Our schedules just never matched up, so it took us weeks to coordinate. Once we finally found a time to hang out, we decided to make it a priority to get together at least once a month. Since then, we’ve stuck to our goal!

On the menu for brunch: French toast with warm maple syrup and berries, hickory-smoked bacon, and coffee.

Mmm! The French toast was, of course, my favorite part of brunch.

To make the berry syrup, I just heated maple syrup and frozen berries in a pot on the stove. Super easy, but so delicious.

My dog has terrible table manners. He won’t jump up and try to get your food, but he’ll sit and wait for the tiniest morsel to hit the floor.

After brunch, the three of us went to the Derby Street Shoppes to do a little shopping.

Holy Christmas!

It’s only November 13th, but it looked like the holiday season was already in full swing. I can’t believe some stores were selling Christmas decorations in mid-October!

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the holiday season, but I don’t like how it starts earlier and earlier every year. Stretching it out almost makes it seem less special (and more commercial) to me. Mal and I actually have some rules to make sure that Christmas is only celebrated at the appropriate time.

IMG_0011 (800x600)

I’m not going to lie, at first, the holiday cheer in the stores sort of annoyed me. (I mean, poor Thanksgiving! It’s one of the best holidays, but it’s never celebrated like the other ones.) But, the more I wandered around, checking out the sights and sounds of the holiday season, the more I started to embrace it.

IMG_0015 (800x600)

Smelling the scents of the season really did it for me. It’s tough to be annoyed with the holidays when you’re sniffing a candle that smells like Holiday Garland, Christmas Cookies, and Warm Woolen Mittens!

IMG_0016 (600x800)

I actually loved the Christmas Cookie candle so much, I bought one. I guess it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the holiday season a little early, right?

IMG_0017 (600x800)

I already broke the eggnog rule, BUT there will not be holiday music until after Thanksgiving and not a single decoration will be hung until December 1! Bah! Humbug!

What do you think about the holiday season? Does it start too soon? Or can it not come soon enough?

  1. i love that you set aside time and made seeing one another a priority – i really need to do that with certain people in my life”¦

and no, the holidays can never come to soon for me. my bday is x-mas eve, so it makes me ultra excited!

  2. i think it comes way to fast. i like your rule about waiting until after thanksgiving. i am still overloading on pumpkin anyways! also it seems like when we were younger stores did not start putting out xmas stuff until after t-day. do you agree? lastly, good for you for setting time aside for you sis and mom. my sis and i try to do the very same thing.

  3. I think the holiday season keeps starting earlier and earlier! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the Christmas season. I’m the one that blasts Christmas music on the radio, but AFTER Thanksgiving. But hey, as long as it’s out there already I’ll embrace it 🙂

  4. I bought the christmas cookie air freshener to keep at my desk and am staring at it right now. It smells fantastic. I’d keep it out all year long.
I don’t mind the Holiday season starting so early. It’s all about celebrating joy and togetherness and that can never be a bad thing

  5. Being in Canada makes celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas really easy because they don’t overlap at all! I’m personally a fan of celebrating Christmas early b/c we usually put away our decorations right after Christmas, so I like the extra long celebration before-hand. 🙂

  6. i love this post for two reasons, tina!
    1) one of my 2011 goals was to go on a shopping outing with my mom once per month, different venue each time. we’ve done it! the monthly time frame is a convenient one to remember, eh – and it’s not too frequent, not too spread out.
    2) as a “new experience,” i decorated this past tuesday – zany early, and i don’t think i’ll do it another year this early…but it sure does look festive in here! glad you’re getting into the holiday spirit!

  7. I work in retail and the holidays do seem to start earlier and earlier. We started getting the store ready before Halloween this year. You are right, it does make it seem less special. I think it makes the holidays a lot more commercial.

  8. I get so frustrated because it does seem like Christmas stuff is out earlier and earlier every year. We go with the Thanksgiving rule too. I think Thanksgiving is started to get pushed to the side because of Christmas. I also think starting SO early takes away some of the “special” of Christmas.

  9. I couldn’t agree more that Christmas music doesn’t come on until Thanksgiving is over! I have however broken out the holiday candles but only because they smell SO amazing!

  10. I love the Christmas Cookie candle! It really does smell like sugar cookies.

I agree that Christmas stuff seems to be coming earlier and earlier. I think it’s a bit much and kind of tacky. There’s unfortunately way too much emphasis on materialism, rather than the true meaning of the holiday.

That aside, I am looking forward to the little white lights around Boston. They’re just so pretty, especially along Comm Ave in Back Bay.

  11. Honestly, I have mixed feelings on this one. I love Christmas and Christmas music makes me so happy, that I want to start it early. But then I always get sick of it by the time Christmas comes haha.

This year, we’re celebrating Christmas with my mom in Florida over Thanksgiving, because then we’ll be with my husband’s family in Ohio for the real Christmas. So I figure a week before Thanksgiving, I’ll start decorating to get in the “Christmas spirit” before we head down to Florida. We’ll see how that works! 😉

  12. The big rule for us is that we don’t put our Christmas tree up until the day after Thanksgiving & we normally don’t start listening to Christmas music until Thanksgiving. I broke this rule the other day 🙂 It’s hard to get into the Christmas spirit right now when it’s 60 degrees in Chicago. I’m not complaining. I do love Thanksgiving & I don’t feel like it gets enough attention.

  13. I totally agree with you!!! I love Thanksgiving and celebrating all that I have to be thankful for with friends and family! It seems that now it almost gets overlooked! I don’t decorate or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving and I plan it keep it that way! Although I love the Christmas season, I think the “retail” aspect of Christmas gets way out of hand!

  14. My grocery store had Christmas stuff out with their Halloween stuff at the end of September! WTF?? I don’t particularly like the holiday season but if it just stuck to December it wouldn’t be so bad. 😛

  15. I tend to just love all things holidays so I fall into the “can’t come soon enough” bucket – though I do hate that in-store Christmas IMMEDIATELY follows Halloween. Thanksgiving needs to be given it’s fair shake if you ask me 🙂

So glad you got to have a nice brunch with your mom and sister – I’m so jealous! It makes me miss my mom and sister!

  16. When I worked retail (5 years at Macy’s), they set up for the holidays mid-september. Now THAT was too early! I hated it, but retail really isn’t a good place to work during the holidays! It can turn anyone into a scrooge. Now, though, I can’t wait. I actually had a week in July when I watched Christmas movies…. yeah, I’m kind of ridiculous when it comes to the holidays. I get all warm and fuzzy. My family likes it though, because I’m always in a good mood 🙂

  17. Also, I just checked out your post with the eggnog french toast. I’ll be trying that closer to the holidays. Great idea!

  18. I think it comes way too early now. I can’t even begin to think about it until the November birthday’s are over, at the very least. I know this year I am looking forward to Christmas even less, as it will be the first one without my mom.

However, I fully support Christmas cookies as well as the candle scent!

  19. November is one thing but I see stuff in like…August. I’ll be shopping in lSept, too, for Halloween costumes or just out and about and there’s already Xmas stuff up. The xmas stuff goes up in the stores before even Halloween or Thanksgiving it seems!

  20. I don’t really mind the Christmas season starting early- especially because it means that Gharadelli peppermint bark was out in stores last week- yay! But seriously, I love Thanksgiving too it just doesn’t have as much “stuff” attached so it’s not as noticeable at stores. I do try to avoid listening to Christmas music until Thanksgiving is over because I tend to get sick of it if I listen to it too much.

  21. Mmm your french toast looks delicious!! Especially with that berry syrup on top!

I totally agree with you on Christmas starting a little too early for my liking. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Christmas, but I embrace Thanksgiving. My husband and I have a “rule” too – no Christmas decor or Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Pretty simple! 🙂

  22. I could not agree with you more. I don’t think any of the Christmas decorations should be out until the day after Thanksgiving. It does tend to make it less special for me. Also, I hate that Thanksgiving gets lost in the rush to start the Christmas season.

  23. I saw today that Nordstrom has put up signs to inform its customers that they will not decorate for Christmas prior to Thanksgiving and they would like all of their customers to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.

  24. I agree that Thanksgiving is an under-appreciated holiday and gets a bit too overshadowed by Christmas. I think we all can stand to be a bit more grateful for the things in our lives…including but not limited to delicious Thanksgiving food!! COMETOMECRANBERRYSAUCE

  25. my husband and I just got finished eating breakfast for dinner and we too had french toast with thawed frozen berries! we added some cinnamon raisin swirl peanut butter though just because i said so! haha
i personally love christmas so i am thrilled when it arrives, but i have noticed that every year it comes to stores, tv and radio much much earlier.
this is the first year i will be home for the holidays so i am very much looking forward to it. i am ashamed to admit i actually kinda bypassed halloween and had on my mariah carey late october! a little much, i know, but i had the itch!

  26. My lights are already up on the house. It is all I can do to not turn them on! I do wait until Thanksgiving evening. I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!!

  27. Whoa, I noticed the same thing too, Tina! I feel like each year, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Xmas come earlier. And I get psyched out, because I feel like I’m losing track of time. 😛 And it’s so nice to see you enjoy time with your two beautiful loved ones~how precious it must be to FINALLY get together.

  28. I say after Halloween it’s all fair game! I am always just so excited to start celebrating and I never want the season to end! But for me the Thanksgiving/Christmas/Hanukkah season is sort of all inclusive. Like November begins and we can start to celebrate all of it at once like a big 2 month party! 🙂 I just really like to celebrate. But my husband did veto me when I wanted to start putting lights up on Veteran’s Day haha. Also, Christmas cookie is my all time favorite candle! Smells sooo good!

  29. i don’t see what’s so bad about the holiday season starting early- people are extra friendly, lots of good-scented candles, extra goodies&treats..and by the time xmas comes, it goes quite fast… so i think we should savor it!

  30. Don’t get me wrong- I love Christmas. But this year, I started seeing Christmas decorations out in stores before Halloween was even over! That’s crazy! It throws me off and makes me feel like I’m behind on everything.

  31. I think it’s okay to start Christmas stuff about a week into November. At that point, you’ve passed Halloween, Thanksgiving is coming up, and it’s time for some serious holiday cheer! Plus, for us students, it means school is picking up and finals are looming, so we need the extra boost!

  32. Here in Canada our Thanksgiving has past already, so I’m definitely eager for Christmas to come. Although, I prefer Halloween to be over and done with before seeing the decorations and the TV commercials relating to Christmas.

  33. I agree, costco has decorations out for sale before Halloween. I love Christmas, but I adore fall and I feel like Christmas starts so early it overshadows it!

  34. We have Thanksgiving in Canada at the beginning of October, so as soon as Halloween is over, it’s on in all the stores in full force. I kind of gradually pull things out in November, but I certainly feel that in general the holiday season is stretched out too early and can be pretty commercialized.

  35. I definitely think the holidays start to soon! I saw Christmas stuff starting to hit the shelves the first week of September. But one thing it does, is that it makes me realize how fast it comes. I’m not even remotely prepared!

Your french toast looks really good! I haven;t had french toast in months!!

  36. Once mid November hits I just start getting into the holiday spirit all the way around. I get excited for Thanksgiving and for Christmas too since I know it is right around the corner. I am not a fan of Christmas music before December but overall this is my favorite time of year so I am all about it!

  37. I definitely won’t listen to Christmas music until after I’ve had my Thanksgiving meal, and I’m looking forward to putting up our decorations that night! I like to give Thanksgiving its due, and then get excited about Christmas (but that doesn’t mean I don’t try to get a jump start on my shopping!).
