Creative Halloween Costumes

Next week is going to be crazy for me. I’m attending a blog summit in California, and then I go immediately to New York City to run the marathon.

Needless to say, it’s going to be an exciting few days, but also a hectic few days, so today I tried to get a head start on my work for next week. I put my nose to the grindstone, and wrote almost a week’s worth of blog posts for NuVal, finished a freelance piece for the Pretzel Crisps blog, and started my Feel Great Weight post for next week. I also replied to a ton of emails and got my inbox down to 57 messages. I still can’t believe how much I got accomplished today. I think I blacked out.

Lunch

Lunch was broken up into a few different parts today. I started with reheated spaghetti squash with meat sauce and grated Parmesan on top.

A little while later, I snacked on a couple of Sweet Potato Spice Muffins. (The recipe will be on Health.com next week!)

And, finally, I enjoyed an Apple Crisp Smoothie, which tasted like cold apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on top. Holy yum. I want another one! (This recipe will also be on the Health.com site next week.)

Workout

I planned to attend a yoga class this morning, but I was making some serious progress on the work front, so I decided to skip it and go to the gym later in the day.

At the gym, I did a 30-minute treadmill workout, followed by 30 minutes on the elliptical. While I was on the elliptical, I read this month’s issue of Real Simple, which included a one-page piece called 13 Last-Minute Halloween Costume Ideas. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on Halloween costumes, so I loved these creative and affordable ideas.

A few of my favorites: Fork in the Road, Iron Chef, and Ceiling Fan.

Fun, right?

My college roommate once pinned Smarties all over her pants for Smarty Pants, and I went to a party a few years ago where I saw a girl wearing a plastic pig nose with a blanket draped around her for Pig in a Blanket. So clever. So fun.

What’s the most creative Halloween costume you’ve ever seen?

  1. Wow, way to go! I love that feeling of productivity and accomplishment. I feel like my day has been the complete opposite. I don’t know what my deal is, but I feel lazy and like I’m moving in slow motion! Oh well, I’m just going with it and trying to enjoy feeling a little lazy.

  2. I’m with Ashley — it seems like it’s been a slow-motion day for me, but it started with spending 3 hours in a high school band hall helping my daughter’s band get fitted for their concert uniforms. Oye. None of us want to teach high school band, I promise.
That apple crisp smoothie sounds YUMMY! And I LOVED the costume ideas. Our church has a carnival for the neighborhood kids and dressing up is just NOT my thing — mainly for your reason: I don’t want to spend a ton of money. The ceiling fan made me laugh out loud!!

  3. I’ll never forget when one of my friends arrived at my door dressed as a washing machine! I used to love homemade costumes, my all time favourite was when I was a mutant ninja hero turtle! What was your favourite childhood costume?

    1. My mom also didn’t like to spend money on Halloween costumes, so I was a black cat or cowgirl most years. I just used stuff from around the house!

  4. I went to Fells Point in Baltimore on Halloween a few years ago, and people had some CRAZY costumes (this part of the city is notorious for awesome costumes on H-ween). An adult man was dressed as a Teletubby. That was a good one.

  5. the best halloween costume i’ve seen was a friend of mine in college who dressed up as a bubble bath! She wore all white and had white balloons attached to her whole body, she had a rubber ducky on her, wore a shower cap, and carried one of those scrubber brushes. She was adorable!

  6. LOL I need a costume idea BADLY! We are having a work party and everyone is dressing up. It needs to be work appropriate and maybe one of those clever “punny” costumes would work–and be comfy, low-effort, and cheap. Thanks, Tina!

  7. One year I dressed myself in pink and wrote Hubba Bubba on my shirt and taped a sneaker on a hat, and I was gum stuck under a shoe…It wasn’t my idea, I thought it was stupid but went along with it, and I ended up winning best costume!

  8. my friend turns really really red when he drinks alcohol, so one year he wore a black shirt, put a green and a yellow circle on it, and was a traffic light…his face being the red light! SO hilarious and creative!

  9. I saw a girl at a party two years ago dressed up as pig with a sign H1N1 on her. Considering swine flu was all anyone could talk about, she was pretty current with the times!

  10. Yay for bangin’ those tasks off your “to do” list!!! Look forward to the health.com recipes! YEARS ago, my ex and two other couples went to a party as a 6 pack of beer. We put “tubes” of paper around us that we’d painted as beer cans, then tied ourselves together. Needless to say, we didn’t stay tied together for long…one of us had to go to the bathroom! I love the creativity, costumes and decorations of Halloween!!

  11. I was out for Halloween last year and there was a girl in a cute cocktail dress and an egg carton on her head. She was “eggs over easy”. Hands down the best costume of the night!!

  12. Haha those are pretty clever. In college, my friend wore all black and glued pictures of chicks all over him- he was a Chick Magnet.

  13. Ha ha. It took me a little while to get that ceiling fan one. Holy cow you’ve gotten so much done today. I better get a move on. 🙂
I cna’t think of any good Halloween costumes right now. Darn it. I’m distracted by the Ellen show.

  14. Haha, I can never think of original/clever costume ideas. I like the Real Simple ones, but I guess I wouldn’t feel “decked out” enough for a Halloween party? That being said, I’m going as a Robert Palmer back-up dancer this Halloween (to complement my boyfriend, who will be channeling Robert Palmer), and since I already have dark hair and plenty of Little Black Dresses, it’s not going to be a particularly innovative costume. 🙂

Living in New York, and having participated in and/or watched the infamous Halloween parades, I’ve seen so many ultra-creative and mind-blowing costumes. Any that involve stilts get my vote for pretty intense!

  15. I don’t where I saw it, but one year I wore light blue scrubs, attached white felt in the shape of a cloud to the scrubs ad carried a spray bottle. Whenever anyone asked what I was I said “Partly Cloudy with a chance of showers” and squirted them with water. It was fun!

  16. One year in college my roommate and i were boycotting halloween but then decided to go out at the last minute, so we made tshirts that said “nudist” on the front and “on strike” on the back and just wore them with jeans. We got quite a range of comments that year but most of them were from guys saying that they had good news and the strike was over…

  17. I’m running the Marine Corps Marathon on the 30th, which will make me miss the annual Halloween party back home. So I’m running the race dressed as a turtle to make up for it 🙂

  18. Love those! I once saw a guy wearing a blue shirt wearing a cord necklace with a piece of plastic chicken dangling from it…chicken cordon bleu.

  19. I love those days in which nothing can get in your way when you are being productive! I had a similar experience today when I corrected a whole class set of essays that I have been dreading reading (I am a teacher). It just lets you be more relaxed later, when the task is done!

  20. Haha, I love the Ceiling Fan costume!! I was a jilted angel one year with a tilted halo, a bottle of beer in a paper bag and a book that read “You’re a naughty child and that’s concentrated evil coming ou the back of you” (Family Guy). That was probably the most creative I’ve ever gotten.

  21. “I think I blacked out”. HAHA that made me lol.
This year all my friends and I are being drink… I’m being a bloody mary with a red dress and celery stacks criss crossed in my hair through a bun, maybe tobasco sauce earrings!

  22. Not creative at all but I was a “tree” for like 4 years… which equaled brown leggings and a green sweatshirt with fake leaves sown on it. Man, I was quite fashionable when I was younger 😉

  23. All time favorite custome was the box of Franzia that actually poured wine. We bumped into him in line for a bar in Wisconsin. Luckily, we had a little Wayne with a crunk cup in our group for some libations while we waited.

Can’t wait to see that sweet potato muffin recipe. I made sweet potato bread last year and loved it!

  24. My boyfriend and I went as nerds last year, that was pretty inexpensive to put together on our own. One year I was Twister and literally made a Twister dress out of an actual Twister game mat and a little purse out of the spinner.

In college someone went as Facebook and made a cardboard cutout with his head sticking through the upper left like the actual site, and he had a marker for people to write on his “wall” all night!

  25. Hahah omg I love that ‘smarty pants’ idea! I used to be really boring with costumes but this one person in high school refused to spend money on an outfit came as a mummy–> ie he just wrapped himself up in toilet paper!

  26. My husband and I filled garbage bags with black balloons (for him) and white balloons (for me) and went as pepper and salt. However, the party we go to is a little tyrannical……making costumes, especially simple ones, are somewhat frowned upon. But I HATE spending upwards of $100 to buy costumes (especially since most of them are uncomfortable). So this year we might just wear our jerseys and be “hockey players” just to make the host aggrevated! 🙂

  27. A couple years ago my friend put black make-up around one eye and had a green shirt with a ‘P’ on it. She was a black-eyed pea! 😛
